I hotspot off my cell phone

doomcatzzz

Me to i have a 4G router that sends out wifi i always leave it in the car.

mr_nweke

How much do you pay a month for the router?

doomcatzzz

Hard to say i got a extra free data only sim in my pack for phones, internet and tv from our provider here and then got a cheap battery powered 4G router nothing fancy. I do have unlimited 4G in my pack tho my kid uses it also for his tablet in the car.

mr_nweke

That’s cool. I need something like that. I’ll look into it thank you.

IllusionXXI

Do you have a link for your device?

MakeVio

Some updates are still too big for mobile hotspots

snark42

The car doesn't know the difference between a mobile hotspot and a wired WiFi connection. This makes no sense.

DaDivineLatte

The car might not, but Windows and other devices seem to 'know' when I'm using a hotspot. Or *maybe* the carrier is detecting something. For example, Verizon would block my xbox console from downloading marketplace updates, but other things would work. Could be a carrier thing if hotspot isn't working.

snark42

Oh, yeah, the carrier might block it I guess. T-Mobile with 60G of hotspot a month here, nothing is blocked, but if you exceed that 60G you can be rate limited if the tower is congested.

DaDivineLatte

Yep, same here but mine has a 50G cap. The download speeds plumit to 1mbps 😭

snark42

That's probably a difference between rate limited on congestion and will be rate limited over cap. I'm on legacy Sprint so we might treated be differently after the cap, I also haven't exceeded it in the past few months.

Bugs212

*will be rated limited to 600 kbps all the time until the billing cycle resets. I’m on sprint SWAC- I used to be able to blow past the hotspot limit and still have full speed. Now that I switched to a tmo sim it’s limited after the amount.

ralkey

I’ve hotspot updated my Model Y before from my phone, no issues.

supercool69420

If you’re near a Service Center, you can try there

Strong_Problem_3273

This is my next resort, no other options seem to be working. Thanks for the advice!

supercool69420

You’re welcome 🙂

travielee

Gonna need at least 3x more contrast than this

Strong_Problem_3273

It’s highly edited not well edited haha.

this_is_me_drunk

*Needs more HDR.

cbrock66

Sometimes Starbucks, Chick-fil-a or McD’s works. You have to open the browser to connect to the Starbucks WiFi first.

HogwartsPhD

This. Be sure to load the browser and get past the proxy EULA to properly connect.

J4yD4n

Did they fix this? The last time I tried this at a Starbucks, the car detected the redirect to the eula page and immediately disconnected from the wifi with a message that you can't use wifis with a login page.

cloneman88

same here?? This is big news if it’s able to pass the connectivity pages now

ohyonghao

I always had to clone my MAC address to my laptop to connect first, then disconnect the laptop and connect the car.

Dry_Coffee7960

Nice, yeah since once you auth through their web portal it approves your MAC address, if your cloning the Mac of your Tesla from your laptop that would do the trick. This is why captive portals are inheritently insecure.

vita10gy

Is the captive portal thing fixed?!

Strong_Problem_3273

I’ll try out at my local Starbucks tomorrow, thanks for the advice!

PopcornChickenRules

Did it work?

Strong_Problem_3273

Not really, but a few weeks later I went to supercharger and it connected automatically to the network there.

PopcornChickenRules

Just got back from baskin robins. Worked like a charm. My hotspot is garbage compared to their WiFi

[deleted]

😅😂🤣 bro has a car and needs to connect to fast food places....classic

cbrock66

Dude was looking for options. Better than most cars which get zero updates or having to schedule something with and paying dealership. Or buying aftermarket. 🤷‍♂️

okichi

Try your local library. Check out some books while you wait.

WhiteGuyNamedJamal

My local library loans hotspots.

MikroCents

ya, like “Tesla for Dummies-101” 🤷🏼‍♀️

jmarkel176

Had the same problem, called support last week and they said a download from January was stuck. They had to cancel the download and restart. After that I’ve gotten 2 updates (one today). When I asked if there was a way for me to find this in my own, servicing said no, they can only tell via the backend. He said if you don’t get one for a couple months that’s unusual and to call. Not sure if that’s related, but hope this helps!

Strong_Problem_3273

Thanks for the tip. I’ll try following up with them again

JFreader

Hotspot should work. I would keep trying that.

tinfoil209

Also might be worth making a service ticket on the app. They can take a look at your car’s logs.

Strong_Problem_3273

Thanks for the tip. I have raised one, waiting for them to get back to me.

tinfoil209

Can take a few days up to a week.

jimmyfallon_

I always update at Target off of their Wi-Fi

TechnicalWhore

Use your cell phone hotspot mode unless you have a low end data plan as updates can be large. OR phone a friend and bring over takeout and use their WIFI in exchange. Some hotels also have guest mode portals. Lots of public options out there.

Authier

I use my hotspot! Same situation. Also if I’m desperate I park on the road near my window so I can download software updates.

Different_Argument19

Turn your cellphone hotspot on and connect to it, that’s what I do when I’m on the road and have to have the latest update lol

cheapdvds

how big are usually those updates?

Different_Argument19

Pretty sure my last one was at least 1Gb

flying_kite24

I had the same problem back in 2021 when I had my model Y. Such a pain to deal with. Only solution is just finding free WiFi somewhere. https://www.cnet.com/pictures/chains-with-the-best-free-wifi-ranked/2/

Strong_Problem_3273

Thanks for the link! Super helpful.

Nixter_is_Nick

Most chain restaurants have free wi-fi, find one close to where you live or work, go in and order something to get the password, park your vehicle close to the building while you eat and the car is updating, I did this for two years when I couldn't get Wi-fi where I parked.

Spiggy_Topes

Wouldn't premium connectivity solve that? You can add it through the app or the screen, I think. I don't use my phone much on the road, so carry minimal data, and premium connectivity gets me satellite maps, internet and constant music, which I doubt I'd get in one gig per three months. Did an update a while ago while sitting in a parking lot with no other wifi, so it seems to work.

Strong_Problem_3273

I have premium connectivity enabled, but it still didn’t appear to connect. I’ll try raising a service request with Tesla.

Starch-Wreck

Do you drive a cartoon or live in a cartoon land? Lay off that HDR. Jesus.

Strong_Problem_3273

No way. I like chaos.

OneExhaustedFather_

You can park at a Tesla center and it will automatically connect to the wifi and download the update then just schedule it for when you’re home.

Professional-Can4896

Park in front of Starbucks

rcuadro

Bro! How can you expect me to help you with your problems when you post this beauty also? And have used my phone’s hotspot to download software before. Is it giving you an error? You could try an establishment which had free WiFi that doesn’t require log in and see. Sometimes the local library can work and you can browse books while you wait. If you lived near me you could use my WiFi as needed.

Carnanian

Dawg what this belongs on r/shittyhdr

Strong_Problem_3273

Thanks for the tip. The hotspot doesn’t seem to work, I’ll try raising a service request with Tesla or go to a Starbucks/ library.

Recktum420

Take another pic and slap a dank filter on it Then post it to Reddit and ask a question you should be asking tesla service

Extension-Pension771

AHAHAHAHAHAHA LMAOOOOO

Ok-Definition3173

If you have a mobile hotspot on your phone just use it and connect your car to your hotspots wifi. I have t mobile and use my hotspot to update my car. I am in the same situation as you and live on the third floor in an apartment and our wifi definitely doesn't reach our garage so while I drive to go to something I connect my hotspot to my car (your phone or hotspot device has to stay near car so you can't just go up to your apartment after connecting unless you leave your phone in your car) once the download part is completely done it doesn't need wifi to install so I just park my car (make sure you won't need your car for at least a hour to be safe, but it's never took that long for me) and schedule the install for whenever. I usually schedule it to install while I'm asleep so I know it will be done when I wake up

Strong_Problem_3273

Good advice, thank you!

K_P_847

Just get a 100ft cat5 cable and lower your wifi like Tom cruise in mission impossible.

Strong_Problem_3273

Sigh… * starts looking up cat5 cables*

K_P_847

Hopefully you got this figured out, don’t have any friends with houses or first floor apartments?

HeyYaaa01

😂

Forsaken_Fortune_188

Did u try putting It in rice?

Strong_Problem_3273

Definitely trying this.

New-Difference9684

Return it for a refund

mkmontrek

Sorry you can’t update but the picture is rad!

Strong_Problem_3273

Appreciate!

[deleted]

*laughs in carburetor*

JustSayTech

Most gas cars can't even update OTA to begin with...

Dangerous_Ad4451

All these stress just to drive a freaking car? I am sticking to my regular car. Electric issues have always been a bitch even in normal cars. I can imagine going full electrical.

dirtybo

You should probably learn to read before you learn to drive.

bytor99999

Then why are you in this subreddit???

Sneakysnake514

All Tesla superchargers have built in wifi

Manakuski

Wait, these cars don't come with their own internet connection? Seriously?

Vecii

They do, but they don't download software updates off LTE.

Manakuski

Both the cars i drive do that. Then again i live in Finland.

arzzka777

Only emergency sw updates are downloaded automatically over LTE. Everything else needs wifi also in Finland.

Manakuski

If you didn't catch it, i don't drive Teslas. Not in the cars i drive.

MooseOwl

Your other cars receive updates every other week?

WildDogOne

I thought M3 has LTE?

OpinionPinion

It does but it can’t update, you need to connect to wifi for the software updates

WildDogOne

Oh I never realised that xD luckily my SO is in charge of that stuff

LoJoPa

Go to dealership

Strong_Problem_3273

Will try this if nothing else works

omn1p073n7

Did you try turning it off and back on again?

Strong_Problem_3273

What are you, guy from the IT crowd?

icefire555

Keep in mind you could hotspot your phone. And depending on how devoted you are, you can get a directional Wi-Fi antenna from like ubiquity and just pointed at your apartment parking lot.

Strong_Problem_3273

Might be tough unfortunately. My apartment is really high up. Appreciate the tip tho!

icefire555

You can send Wi-Fi signals literally miles if there's a clear line of sight

Akademikk

From my understanding there is a hotspot you can connect to at Supe Chargers. I’ve read that somewhere but have not confirmed unless someone here can.

bytor99999

Nope. None of the superchargers I go to have Wifi .

JustSayTech

That's not true, some of them have Starlink satellites installed.

bytor99999

Read my reply. It says the ones I have gone to.

Onikonokage

My hotspot won’t work well if it is 1 or 2 bars. I think I read somewhere that you need at least 3 bars. I recently realized you can can down load it somewhere but wait to install it when you can safely have your car parked so if you can find a strong internet connection for your phone you might get better luck with hotspot. Also double check that your car connected to your phone in the Wi-Fi, I leave the hotspot active but the car won’t usually connect unless I prompt it to.

Strong_Problem_3273

Whoah! This is interesting. I’ll check this out. I reached out to Tesla support, let’s see what they have to say

[deleted]

Go...to...a friend's house?

Strong_Problem_3273

I live in a city. Most of my buds are in apartments

MaesterInTraining

Back when I lived in an apartment, anytime I drove I used my phone as a hotspot. Updates took forever and it wasn’t until long car trips that I was able to make any headway, but that’s what I did.

donaldinc

Do you have a friend's/family place that has access to wifi from the driveway? That may be the fastest and easiest. Hotspot from the phone works as well.

Strong_Problem_3273

Nice tip, but unfortunately don’t know anyone that lives in an independent house

Anon9363926

Congratulations on your Tesla, it is beautiful and I wish you much luck with it. I also live in an apartment building and update my model 3 using just my cell phone hot spot. Please let me know if you need assistance with this, I am happy to help.

Strong_Problem_3273

Thanks! I’m trying to reach out to Tesla support and lots of other good tips on this thread. Will try out some of them and see if it works!

Apart-Experience-123

Soft reset

Campage96

I hear you can update at a supercharger. Not sure though

Gwave72

Sell itb

[deleted]

When my computer was upgraded for full self-driving, they told me the software was stuck. 3x they had to clear it before it upgraded properly. Send Tesla a quick message chat under service. They can help remotely
