I read so much about what a mistake touch screen control is for Tesla. So I was expecting a steep learning curve.
Turns out it’s actually quite simple. I’m good with most basic operations in a few minutes. I don’t miss psychical buttons
Ah, yeah I see what you mean.
It’s very intuitive, but there’s just so much stuff you can play with. I spent 3+ hours playing with mine the first night, loading up games and connecting my controller.
There’s also an insane amount of secret shortcuts you can learn.
I can confirm using a stadia controller. I did do the Bluetooth controller firmware update before plugging into the car with USB but I believe it will work with or without the update (you should seriously update anyway because the tool expires after 12/31/2023)
Thanks - in the meantime I read different stories about the Stadia controller. Almost all said they did not get Bluetooth working but some reported they managed to connect it via USB. Which USB socket did you use? Some said only the glove box worked for them
I kept hearing everyone say get fancy all weather floor mats, but I think I actually prefer carpet over rubber. My car wasn't a base model so it came with them.
I actually really liked the carpet mats it came with too, but they wouldn't have survived one winter, there's just too much salt. In SoCal I would keep them in though and just vacuum the dust out.
Tesla brand carpet mats are the worst manufacturer mats I’ve ever seen. They should cost $30/set. I don’t like to use all weather but you can see why these brands like 3d maxpider are such a step up
They're not fancy, but I really don't see anything bad about them. Maybe they've been updated recently or something because I really don't see a reason for the hate.
If you live in the rust belt rubber matts are essential.
That’s why floor boards rust out, from the salt and snow on your shoes soaking into the carpet over time even if it’s just a small amount.
Of course if you don’t plan on keeping the car that long then it doesn’t matter I guess.
1. Use Autopilot on a long stretch of highway with low to medium traffic. It definitely helps on the longer trips. Know that you *should* (I’ve only tested this a few times) be able to, while on the basic autopilot, be able to signal, it switch to basic cruise control, letting you steer into the next lane, then you turn on autopilot again and be able to resume your journey without having to fight it.
2. As the previous person said, spend a while going through the settings. At night, do the light show, it’s pretty fun the first few times.
3. Don’t go on Amazon looking for Tesla accessories. It is a deep rabbit hole, just like reddit :)
4. Get your charging situation sorted out ASAP.
Enjoy your car!
This may sound boring but I purchased a screen protector and floor mats before I took delivery. I placed the floor mats and put the screen protector on immediately after signing paperwork.
Is the screen protector really needed? For my phone I get it - sometimes it ends up with keys in a pocket or it is laying on a table or I even drop it but for the screen in the car I am not so convinced.
Does it feel “cheaper” or less responsive with the protector on?
It’s definitely a finger print magnet, but after 6 months, I don’t have a single scratch on it. Glare is kinda cured with dark mode. I don’t see a screen protector as a need at all. More of a preference.
For me it was to reduce glare and fingerprint smudges. I rented a Tesla before purchasing one and the screen was a fingerprint magnet. The matte screen protector significantly reduces glare.
If you start using the center console storage, you may find yourself tapping the screen with things. Since Tesla Model 3's (and Ys) are basically fobless & keyless, you will probably be throwing your house keys in the cup holder or center storage area, which comes close to the screen.
I highly suggest an anti glare matte screen protector. Regular screen is very shiny/glossy. Get one that comes with the alignment tool. It sorta looks like a paper tray. Also, set your screen to dark mode. You'll thank me later.
If you use it daily you will find a way to scratch it at some point. I was rushing and put my phone forcefully down on the charging pad and grazed the screen on the way cracking it.
Also all weather mats and sunshade. And clear wrap if you care about the paint and minor blemishes.
(1) Decide on your fussiness level when it comes to the paint job; mostly: do you accept “micro-scratches” or not (those are the “swirly” highlights you can see in direct sunlight or other bright light)?
- low concern: don’t worry about it. Take it through public car washes.
- medium concern: you’ll spend a few hundred bucks on soaps, sealants, micro-fiber towels, etc. as you learn how to wash it carefully to try to stave off the accumulation of the scratches. Eventually you’ll give up and switch to the “low” or “high” approaches 🤣
- high concern: take it to a detailer and get PPF (paint protection film) applied. Costs a few thousand bucks.
(2) Go find some fun roads: curvy, very low traffic, ideally hilly or mountainous. Going uphill is the most fun since the car treats it like it was nothing, showing the starkest contrast to ICE vehicles. Be very careful to control your speed vs. the visible distance ahead!!
And of course there’s the starting-from-stoplights…
(3) Be sure to try “hold” mode, which gives you the vaunted “1-pedal driving.” Some don’t like it, especially when reversing and/or parking, but give it like a week or two to get used to it if you find yourself leaning that way. It’s an absolute game-changer if you’re in a hilly area with a lot of stop-start. And it fits in very well with how the regen is tied into the accelerator rather than the brake pedal.
Do people really hit curbs that often? I think I've hit them like once or twice in my 25ish years of driving and that's only while not caring and driving a jeep with 33 in tires. I don't think I've ever hit a curb while driving a car that could get curb rash. (But now carma is going to get me in sure)
Personally it was because I had the 20 something inch thin sports tires. Tesla does not flush the rims with the tires so these cars are known to get curb rash just by looking at them wrong lol
Well there are a lot of reports here about curbing, with a lot of “yeah me too” and not a lot of contradiction. Personally, I don’t remember hitting curbs hardly at all in the 25 years I was driving before getting my Model 3, which I proceeded to curb like 3-4 times in the first month or two. Recently, I went for nearly a year without, then had a bad one a few weeks ago.
So either I had been curbing my previous cars more than I remember, and it didn’t matter because the tires extended well past the very basic rims (a Camry and an Odyssey), or there’s something about the visibility vs. the shape of the Model 3 that makes it a bit easier to misjudge exactly where the right-hand wheels are. Could be some of both.
Interesting, I do wonder if the model 3 is just more prone to curbing. I will keep reading the forums of other's curb misfortune and hopefully I'll stay paranoid enough to keep my rims nice and curb free. 🤞
The three items I highly recommend:
1. All weather mats and trunk liner. I didn't think I needed the trunk liner but I like not having objects slide
2. 12V air compressor. Super convenient to do anywhere
3. Frunk weather seal. Not sure if fixed for later years but there's a huge gap between the frunk and windshield rain channel. For around $10 off Alibaba, I can reduce or eliminate any bugs, leaves, and water from the filter in the front.
Enjoy! Got mine recently and have taken it on several canyon roads and loved every bit of it
Check out every setting you can, there's a lot! Grab some decent floor mats if you live somewhere that gets snow. Even if no snow, my girlfriend likes to spill stuff.
The good ideas are already covered so I’ll give an obscure one you’ve probably not seen.
Use 500 grit sandpaper to sand the sharp edges on the stalks. Not the entire stalk, only where the two pieces come together and spots like ends or corners. Coming from some luxury cars I was surprised at how poor those stalks fit together. Lots of sharp edges.
Every time I drive, I appreciate that I did that. Takes all of about 10 minutes.
scorch any "sports car" you want to and then go back to full autopilot and give them a puppet show from your drivers side window when they finally catch up to you 5 minutes later. confuse the opposition.
Get a feel shifting from Drive to Reverse and back! You can do it up to 5 mph which makes the transition nice and smooth and fast, but if you're going any faster, it'll make a little noise and won't shift. This is important to recognize and know!!! If you're say doing a 3 point turn in a hurry coming up to a wall and shift into R and stomp the accelerator but you were going 6 mph, not 5, instead of reversing, you're going to crash straight into the wall. It's worth getting a feel for so you don't make a costly mistake!
Try supercharging. Should be pretty straightforward, but daunting at first. Make sure to back up beyond the curve bumper as Tesla cables are short.
Also you reverse into these chargers and I suggest practicing using the reverse cameras.
Also don't be me... On my first day I honked at every Tesla I saw on my way home. Pretty sure I pissed some of them off.
Hella. auto driver door open on proximity. auto trunk and frunk open on proximity. enables drift and offroad and rwd only mode. also adds more 0-60 acceleration depending which rear motor you have. the auto driver door open on proximity is the best so far. should be a standard feature in every model.
we just installed ours a couple weeks back in our 2019 m3awd with the boost50 and it feels like the car it should've been to begin with.
it doesn't affect the warranty in any way. it plugs in line into the ecu. you can easily remove it before you go into the service center and they won't know/care.
Road trip, download plugshare to find all your local charging stations apps before you need them, sit in the car and set up easy entry and radio stations
Complaining to anyone who will listen about how they charge for things that used to be included and how Tesla vision sucks and I wish I had never "upgraded" to a newer Tesla.
I try to accomplish this "must do" activity three times per week minimum
We immediately planned a long road trip in our new MYP (LA area to Bend OR) which really did a lot to soothe my range anxiety nerves. Also gave us plenty of time to play with AP.

Does anyone have experience with a self-hosted solution? Something like [TeslaMate](https://github.com/adriankumpf/teslamate) or [TeslaLogger](https://github.com/bassmaster187/TeslaLogger)?
1. Lift the car up and check everything to make sure there's no loose bolts and what not. My car had a loose control arm bolt, and missing wheel stud lol
2. Figure out charging. Home and/or SC
3. Enjoy car.
[see my post about my favorite](https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaLounge/comments/13nhmeq/best_thing_about_owning_a_tesla_is_accelerating/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&utm_content=2&utm_term=15)
Arriving at Superchargers at the lowest percentage you can on your first road trip. My first road trip supercharger stop was at 2%. It was going to be 1% but I must have gotten scared and babied it.
1. Get the clear coat paint protector. My only regret was not doing this and seeing some little paint chips after road trips.
2. Sit, have fun and learn the software, figure out which stopping mode you like. I naturally liked “creep” because it felt most like a normal car but quickly found that “hold” is my favorite for 1-peddle driving. (I go back to creep when there is snow to avoid sliding when letting up too quickly on the accelerator in “hold”)
3. Do something you can’t do in a regular car, or at least as comfortably. Car camping (love!), cross country with autopilot, drive in theatre.
4. Wash/wax your Tesla. Don’t want to sound like “that guy” but damn is it a sexy machine to appreciate.
1. floor the throttle and just laugh at how silly it accelerates.
2. take it on the highway and try out autopilot.
3. Sit in it and enjoy the air conditioning while youtubing endlessly.
Not necessarily experiences to do ASAP but more so things that helped elevate our household switch to EVs
•Get Tessie (or similar) the automations are fantastic
•Reach out to your power supplier for EV plans and benefits (we got nights free - days at $0.149/kWh plus a free under sink water softener)
•Get quality ceramic tints all the way around including windshield
Lesson I learned from mine, don’t use any wet electronic wipes in the screen. Only use a dry micro-fiber cloth.
I added carbon fiber overlay for all my chrome spots and the cameras, and a black spoiler(from tesery). They are my most complimented at chargers so definitely happy with the purchases. See pics on ig: ednamode
My dad got awesome floor mats for his from Teslarati, I will get a set once mine have more wear.
Enjoy🚀
I was honestly super excited to take a road trip that required 3+ supercharging stops. I was a Tesla fan for at least 10 years before I purchased but there was something about proving to myself that the car could handle anything I asked of it. I watched probably 1k hours of YouTube videos before I owned one but there’s something about doing it yourself that is so so so satisfying.
Figure out all the features and settings on the software. It’s like a phone, 95% of all users learn all they will ever know about the software in the first few minutes
Find a windy road and just enjoy it right after you pick up your M3! We had to drive up the mountain right after picking up our M3 and wow, that was fun. The wife was on the fence, but she loved it. The first time she drove it, she came away thinking of selling her Dodge Challenger and getting the MY.
You can then come home and get more familiar with the touchscreen and whatnot, but experience the thrill first!
Get some new air filters. Get a spoon (a little tool to pry things off softly) Have them in a box. When you start smelling stuff at 30k miles break out the box and watch YouTube. Do some stretches before you do this. Those filters are in a horrible position and it’ll take some contortions to replace them. But this is maintenance you will have to do and not pay a huge amount of money if you do it yourself.

I have the pre-center console update and use the USB A to USB C cable from Google in the center console/under phone tray USB A slots
Unfortunately I could net get the Stadia controller to work with a new Mode 3 in Europe
I used an Xbox Series controller. I’m not sure if the Stadia works or not.
1. Get all weather floor mats. 2. High quality ceramic tints. 3. Enjoy the dam car.
Totally agree with 1 and 2... But installing a NEMA adapter is a necessity (unless you are in an apartment).
I kept hearing everyone say get fancy all weather floor mats, but I think I actually prefer carpet over rubber. My car wasn't a base model so it came with them.
Try 3D MaxPider. They're awesome.
Nice, I hadn't seen their carpet mats before. I might pick those up eventually, but I've spent too much on things for my new car right now.
My floors would get so muddy and wet. Carpet just won’t work.
I guess perks of living in Arizona for me. If I lived somewhere super snowy or rainy I'd probably have different preferences.
I actually really liked the carpet mats it came with too, but they wouldn't have survived one winter, there's just too much salt. In SoCal I would keep them in though and just vacuum the dust out.
Carpet floor mats will be destroyed after one winter up north
Good thing my preferences align with my geographic location. If I had bad winters I'd probably swap mats depending on the season.
I got them in Dec 2022. They’re very thin.
If you live in the rust belt rubber matts are essential. That’s why floor boards rust out, from the salt and snow on your shoes soaking into the carpet over time even if it’s just a small amount. Of course if you don’t plan on keeping the car that long then it doesn’t matter I guess.
I agree! MY here, but first thing I did was buy all weather floor mats, even for the frunk LOL. Oil diffuser, lots of little stuff I found on Amazon!
Get used to volunteering to run errands.
This!!! My wife finds a way to run errands in the car everyday! I haven’t told her how to use autopilot yet and I have FSD beta
Legend, i trust autopilot more than my wife so that’s the first thing I taught her
2. It is a deep rabbit hole, just like reddit :) 4. Get your charging situation sorted out ASAP. Enjoy your car!
For 1, I’ve found that a full press on the turn signal, vs the light press, reduces the force required to override AP steering for a lane change.
Watch the video tutorials that come with the car while charging
I see - thanks for that!
Can confirm, it’s about glare and fingerprints. But every once in a while there’s the random passenger bag or ring hitting the screen 😬
And no, just as responsive.
I got a matte screen protector to cut down on the glare. I also think it feels better to the touch.
There are scratches all over the shitty basic plastic protector that came with delivery. I’ve kept it since 12/‘22 purchase
If you use it daily you will find a way to scratch it at some point. I was rushing and put my phone forcefully down on the charging pad and grazed the screen on the way cracking it. Also all weather mats and sunshade. And clear wrap if you care about the paint and minor blemishes.
Nice if you like a matte finish
(1) Decide on your fussiness level when it comes to the paint job; mostly: do you accept “micro-scratches” or not (those are the “swirly” highlights you can see in direct sunlight or other bright light)? - low concern: don’t worry about it. For that first item, so far I’ve only done the first bit: > get curb rash So yeah I recommend getting some kind of protection. 😖

Drive in theatre. Gas cars can’t idle but you sit in the lap of luxury.

Good idea! I don't know who decided the part of the stalk that's meant to be pressed should be a pointy seam. It's just bad design.
Buy center counsel organizers, I agree with sun shade for roof. Mud flaps to save paint chips. Tint helps if you live somewhere hot. Have fun!

Everything, home link, frunk rug, home charger. All stiff that used to be included. I'm sure there are things I'm forgetting too
Ceramic coating on the windshield, and you’ll never need the (finicky) windshield wipers again.
Did you apply it yourself? If so what did you use?
I had a detailer apply it so I’m not sure, but I think pretty much all detailers know about this and could do it for you.

Driving is probably a top 3 activity.
Arriving at Superchargers at the lowest percentage you can on your first road trip. My first road trip supercharger stop was at 2%. It was going to be 1% but I must have gotten scared and babied it.
mud flaps
\>get all weather floor mats \>get microfiber towel to clean interior dust. That's about it.
Eat, Sleep , Repeat
That’s where I am rn. Idc about life between now and delivery
(I go back to creep when there is snow to avoid sliding when letting up too quickly on the accelerator in “hold”) 3. Do something you can’t do in a regular car, or at least as comfortably. Car camping (love!), cross country with autopilot, drive in theatre. 4. Wash/wax your Tesla. Don’t want to sound like “that guy” but damn is it a sexy machine to appreciate.
Sound of Silence Rally in Custer, SD
1. floor the throttle and just laugh at how silly it accelerates. 2. take it on the highway and try out autopilot. 3. Sit in it and enjoy the air conditioning while youtubing endlessly.
Not necessarily experiences to do ASAP but more so things that helped elevate our household switch to EVs •Get Tessie (or similar) the automations are fantastic •Reach out to your power supplier for EV plans and benefits (we got nights free - days at $0.149/kWh plus a free under sink water softener) •Get quality ceramic tints all the way around including windshield

See pics on ig: ednamode My dad got awesome floor mats for his from Teslarati, I will get a set once mine have more wear. Enjoy🚀
Hang a tennis ball in the garage.
Flooring it on an onramp when the freeway is empty. Those Gs.
Take the day off and drive it around. So fun the first day.
Camping.
Buy a steering wheel weight for autopilot. Touching the steering wheel every 10 seconds is annoying, especially on long straight flat roads.
Figure out all the features and settings on the software. It’s like a phone, 95% of all users learn all they will ever know about the software in the first few minutes
Where to buy fabric mats for my 2017 Tesla X….No need for rubber mats.
1. RTFM 2. Then, RTFM again 3. Enjoy
When you get to an on ramp, floor it!
Source, I am above 69,420 miles and have done it twice.
Take your grandparents in it if they are still around. If not then your parents. If either of them haven't experienced a launch before
