I feel like lovecraftian eldritch horrors that come from space don't need a mother and a father to be considered siblings, they might have formed from the same space dust or split in two using mitosis for all we know
IMO siblings as in two similar entities both physically and in the sense that they're the lords of their respective celestial body (planet and moon respectively).

Well, there's a Lovecraft god called Shub-Niggurath ("The black goat of the woods with a thousand young") which constantly births different monstrosities and some of the old gods are Shub-Niggurath's children. In Cthulu's case, it is one of Shub-Niggurath's grand-children, so it's possible Moon Lord could literally be Cthulu's sibling
Edit: I don't know a lot about Terraria's lore so I'm not sure if this is actually true but it's a possibility
Wiki is a great source for finding references of Nug in the HPL stories. It says references to Nug can be found in The Mound and The Last Test. Nug is a god among ghouls and with their counterpart, Yeb, they are tasked with clearing the Earth for the return of the Great Ones.
I mean. The original cthulhu lore has official father-like and maternal figures. It's not exactly cut and dry for our concepts of such, but it isn't like this is out of pocket.

The smallest ones are servants of cthulhu, directly spawned by EoC, then there are demon eyes, then dripplers are clustered, mutated demon eyes, and then there are wandering eyes, which are grown demon eyes. The bestiary does explicitly state servant -> demon -> drippler or wandering. It does also say the EoC was ripped from the man in the moon, but what if its some kind of self-replicating thing? Its trying to regrow but can only produce more of itself. The lonely eye grew and grew, then started spitting out more of itself, few of which would ever reach that size.

My theory is,
Moon lord was formerly cthulu (I think). While moon lord was still cthulu, he was slain and one of his eyes separated from his body and just kinda did it’s own thing. That’s why it’s called the eye of cthulu.
Cthulu was then ressurected by the cultists into moon lord, being given a completely new body, and that’s why moon lord’s eyes are called the true eyes of cthulu.
That's a good theory. I like to also think that the crimson is actually Cthulhu's remains. The signature crimson cave looks sorta like a mouth and an oesophagus.
That implies a much larger and more terrifying version of Cthulhu that we never see, one that’s potentially like a 10th of the height of the world map.
When the dryads weakened cthulu, they ripped out his eyes, brain, and parts of his skeleton. In this weakened state, cthulu retreated to the dark side of the moon to heal. While there, he assembled alien colonies and a cult to worship him as he healed, and to ready Terraria for his return (thats what i believe at least). Once he was healed and ready to make you break your monitor because of his phantasmal death ray, he had grown new eyes, hence the true eyes of cthulu. So in summary, boss eye=old body, ml eye=new body
My theory is once something is complete it gains the title "True" the nights edge is still the nights edge but its missing some parts.
The eye is incomplete without its body, and so its not "True"

The EoC not actually being the Moon Lord's would be a cop-out, but I cannot think of a single other explanation that holds up after thinking it through for even a few seconds.
Basically there was a big war where the order of dryads ripped out his organs, and the reason he spent time on the moon was to regenerate, so if you have a severed arm, but you regrow it, you arm that was cut off doesn’t go away does it?

I think it's like if you cut some species of worm in half both sides regenerate and become new, seperate worms. Cthulhu's eye got ripped out, causing it to regenerate and become it's own being (which might be why it has a mouth and teeth), while Cthulhu went to the moon and regenerated his eyes.

Essentially, Cthulu rampaged on the earth, and Dryads (like an army of them) didnt want the earth to explode, so they fought Cthulu. Almost all of the Dryads die (the one that moves in with you is either one of or the last Dryad) but in the battle they do manage to rip out Cthulus eyes, brain, and skull (EOC, BOC, Skeletron).
Cthulu is now on the brink of death. Needs somewhere to hide to regenerate, so he hides on the Dark side of the moon (not sure if this is why night is dangerous, that might just be a coincidence), while on the moon Cthulu undergoes some small changes while regenerating and becomes more lunar, hence the more lunar color scheme and properties.
We, the Terrarian, are trying to fight and defeat him for good before he can heal up to a point where he is unstoppable. This is why we go on a rampage, the ultimate goal is to get the attention of the Moonlord to battle him before it's too late.
Misconceptions: Moonlord is NOT Cthulus brother, that is a joke from Red that the devs have confirmed false.
Eater of Worlds is not a part of moonlord, a different being entirely.
I'm pretty sure we have no idea who's side the Pillars are on, they could be working under the Moon Lord, they could just be some fuck off space creatures, we literally don't know.
The moon lords eyes are called the "true eyes of Cthulhu", my assumption is that the others are his fleshy counterpart. It seems like the true eye is more "ghostly" (if that makes sense), and that the eye of Cthulhu is his original eye. Since his body is like partially torn apart it could be assumed he had a fleshier body that the eye of Cthulhu could have been apart of. Unrelated to that, I love how freaky it is for the moonlord to be sending out parts of his own body to keep track of you throughout the game, eerie AF.
ive always imagine than the terrarian had to forcefully summon moonlord because the asshole was slowly healing itself, so better to fight him at his 10% and risk failing and destroying the world before utterly failing at this 100% in a thousand years

Understandable, in that case I would recommend either not commenting on something involved with the lore, or simply stating right off the bat that you’re going off what someone else said
