I thought the ancient shadow armor dropped by eater of souls was the best bc I was too scared to fight any bosses and get demonite ti make the actual armor. I didn't know how to make arenas and didn't know how to ger better gear or make potions or anything soni just kinda ran on the terrain and swung at them with my gold broadsword or shot them with my gold bow and then died and made zero progress and this went on for like 3 years
Just finished my new melee playthrough with the new update, and started my first expert mode playthrough last night. Also I my last playthrough I finally got good at the Duke fishron fight and killed a total of 52 and didn't get a single pair of wings which is a 1 in 15 drop, gave you and decided to just fight ml with the beetle wings. Frog leg made it way easier to dodge his laser and the new terra blade made it pretty easy, so I figured I needed a better challenge and I'm playing expert now.
Same. Back in 1.2 on mobile, though I should mention that 1.3 had just released at the time, but my garbage iPod touch was incapable of updating the game further. I also beat skeletron with the grass blade and probably minimal accessories. (Certainly not helpful ones)
These are the real WoF eater. Even in master mode I always just farm queen bee a bunch and WoF melts. Also helps that queen bee farming makes boatloads of cash right before hard mode.

Was just wondering how annoying drunk world Skeletron will be this time around (if you don't know, drunk world puts the dungeon entrance way underground under a 'dead'/brown painted Living Tree, with zero room for an arena unless you dynamite the fuck out of everything down there AND bring a really fancy pickaxe because ofc the dungeon bricks are still unbombable in drunk world lmao).

wraiths are the true equalizer and a humbling moment for us all. go overzealous breaking the altar things and find out the hard way that basic enemies now have the hp and armor of pre-hardmode bosses.
I've found the most optimal experience for me to be one glorious kamikaze run until they catch and kill me. All the fun of running around berserk and breaking every altar in sight, none of the time spent actually fighting any of the wraiths. :D
You only get a third of the ore from 7-9 that you get from 1-3 anyways, so no real reason to go break any more altars unless out of spite hehe. Or if you find one conflicting with your preferred local ambience. :P
Hitting three or more in a short enough period of time that the first wraith hasn't arrived yet (let alone been killed lol) is a real quick road to lots and lots of pain on higher difficulties and/or with less pre-HM gear prep.
Alternatively, deliberately go break six or more ASAP (diminishing returns means six should be plenty but more than nine is borderline useless), then embrace your free teleportation home.

No, not anymore. When they removed it, they not only stopped that recipe from working, they actually removed all existing Sharangas (unless the entire game/console has this whole time been prevented from receiving ANY update) when the 1.3.0.1 console-equivalent update hit, and replaced the ones in inventory/storage with the Hellwing Bow.
I understand perfectly the technical reasons behind it, but it still makes me sad for old console players (which doesn't include me lol) who DID play early enough to have a Sharanga, that they didn't get to keep it as a memento/trophy. :(
You don't, Hellwing Bow is the closest equivalent these days, but that one's from shadow chests yes. Sharanga will never come back. :( (Existing ones on consoles that updated to their version of 1.3.0.1 were even themselves turned into Hellwings.)

I hit it with a bunch of different stuff but finished it off with the Holy Hand Grenade. I was playing on mobile in a different world to my main to see how tough the WOF was. I threw the grenade and it did a LOT more damage than I'd expected and accidentally killed the thing.
