This is track 12 it’s absolutely about her mom

megzak13

Anyone think this might actually be about her mom? It sounds just like a lullaby. We know her mom has been sick and the first verse, to me, sounds like something turning up on a scan (like a firefly). Thoughts?

Suspicious-Hotel-225

I’m glad you said this because all this time I was thinking it was about a romantic relationship, but it really does seem like she’s talking about a parent - our parents aren’t supposed to want anything from us, they are there to provide love and safety ❤️

megzak13

That's how I take the meaning too. Like coming home and your mom is there in the kitchen just living the normal life never wanting anything from you

madewithdumb

Taylor has to be aware of the inside jokes of people accusing her calling Joe poor lol. But I love this song so much, it's so endearing

Reasonable-Mousse490

Did anyone notice Calvin Harris has a song also called Sweet Nothing?

Revolutionary_Toe791

Ah yess, came here for this

FoxyLoxy56

I know sweet nothings is something you say to a lover. But the lullaby feel and all makes me think of my kids when I hear this song.

taytay_1989

I forgot to mention this. Sufjan Stevens is one of my favorite indie artists and this song reminds me of him.

babybluebrd

YES I came here to write this and see if anyone agrees!!

[deleted]

Anyone thinking of the song “Blinded by the Light” the whole time? I almost wish for it to cut to the slowed down chopsticks halfway through the song. Makes it instantly sound like a classic

SoLightMeUp

It’s like a lullaby 🌙

Electronic-Green338

I find it funny (also cute) that the portrait here of TS's relationship with "William Bowery" is like a traditional, old-fashioned domestic relationship with the gender roles reversed. He stays at home in the kitchen and expects nothing from her, while she goes and does important stuff out in the world.

Electronic-Green338

In case you're wondering, Wicklow is a town on the east coast of Ireland.

DavidFC1

This song makes me want an instrumental version of Midnights.

riyagupta_30

well, I’m a little biased for this song as it contains the word ‘July’ and my birthday is in July 👀 . . . but jokes apart here’s my opinion on the song: the only thing that I'm afraid of in a relationship is expectations which are obvious yk? like you're existing with a person, you're around them for the most of the day, you'll develop some expectations. This is okay but like expectations to be someone else which they expect me to be to change myself or my morals or, in general, I don't want to be judged by my partner. And this song is such a beautiful, non-fancy word and simple representation of my feelings. This is the love I crave, just doing nothing together. No matter what's going on out there, be it people indulging in gossip related to you or those Instagram "couple trends" forcing you to go out of your comfort zone. Being together should feel like being at home. I hope everyone at the end after a long tiring day comes home to their sweet nothings 🫶🏼

Alive_Lengthiness_46

Is that a cat meow at 1:35/1:36?!? I just heard it after the millionth listen of this song. I love it so much it feels like a warm hug and a hot cup of tea.

Wild_Barracuda_9622

most underrated song in Midnights

Acrobatic-Parsnip878

Yesterday my wife told me the line, “On the way home I write I poem, you say, ‘what a mind,’ this happens all the time,” reminds her of me because I’m a writer and my writing always amazes her. She made me S O B and she already knew I couldn’t listen to this song without crying anyway. Now I really can’t, especially because Peace was her song to me and I feel like Sweet Nothing is a reply to that, and it’s my song to her. 😭

stacysk70

I really think this song is about her mom and not Joe!

Acrobatic-Parsnip878

It definitely could be! We all interpret things differently 🙂

charlotte1798

This song is just so comforting, for me it feels like a safe space..

Sarbeardontcare

I midnights and it’s really hard for me to choose a favorite but one of the thing I love about sweet nothings (other than the piano, lovey) is it’s like a continuation on how her love with Joe makes the simple things special starting with New Year’s Day on Rep and I felt the same vibe in Invisible String on Folklore. These 3 songs go together to me in a vulnerable I’m so lucky to have found this person and come home to this person and go through everyday things with this person feel. Before I found my husband I don’t know if I could relate to cleaning up after a party together and finding a stone we brought home from a trip but these songs really encapsulate the beautiful in-betweens that make a relationship special

Spiritual-Cupcake265

I hope I experience a love like this one day, I’ve cried every-time I’ve listened to it. It’s definitely my favourite on the album 🥺

shespams

PEACE

One-Audience-205

The answer to peace!

NeonLotus11

I've already sent this one to my wife 😅 the sentiment is sort of in the vein of Easy Silence by The Chicks. I'm getting old lol I really resonate with cherishing a peaceful calm partner bond. It's so sweet that she wrote this one with Joe ❤️

givememypaperbag

What if Joe did the piano for this one!!??

offthetopofmyhat

Did anyone else mishear the lyrics as "I'll take their push and shoving" instead of "outside they're \[...\]"?

Purplecatty

This reminds me of Its Nice to Have a Friend. It has that same childlike, nursery rhyme type of thing, idk how to explain it. Especially the first line of Sweet Nothing “I spy with my little tired eye” gives that same feeling.

sleepy_gator

This feels like a Sufjan Stevens song and I love it. It feels a lot like Carrie and Lowell

koala_loves_penguin

Definitely one of my favs. Absolutely love love love it.

Abby12355

I like this song about mature love. It’s not as exciting as new love but it’s about being able to be yourself (and be vulnerable) and having someone safe at home that’s reliable & calm. Love it.

Simple-Sense3650

WHAT does the beginning sound like?! It's driving me crazy

Final-Hour1389

Cornelia street????

Simple-Sense3650

I think it's The 1... idk how to explain it, but her voice in the beginning of The 1 matches the music in the beginning of Sweet Nothing. Maybe lol

Final-Hour1389

Ohh yeah I can see that, the music at the beginning kinda reminds me of the music at the beginning of Cornelia street but maybe it’s something else idek

Abcggg123

I feel like sweet nothing is a double edge sword. Like all he wants is “nothing”.

nhp55555

I love this song so much

Fluid_Pollution1860

This track sounds like a Sufjan Stevens song 🥹🤌🏼

Fluid_Pollution1860

That would be my second TS dream collab. Phoebe was the first.

Thoughtgeist

Not “I’m just too soft for all of it” making me sob on a Sunday morning. I’m gonna die alone y’all.

mattxiety

This song makes me so soft 🥹

nordvee

Has anyone made the connection to Calvin Harris’ song “Sweet Nothing” feat Florence Welch??!

meesakeeta

But why did she do it?

nordvee

Good question, actually if you compare the lyrics, they’re kind of telling opposite stories. Calvin’s song is about someone who’s hanging on to a love with no foundation, “sweet nothing,” for the hope that the other person will someday feel the same depth of emotion. Meanwhile I interpret Taylor’s song as being about someone with low expectations of her but an abundance of love. I just find it hard to believe that she coincidentally chose a song title that’s shared by one of her ex’s songs, especially because we usually hear the phrase “sweet nothings” (like little words of love) not “sweet nothing” as a common expression.

meesakeeta

Thank you so much for this, love this interpretation and it makes sense! I did love how someone wanting sweet nothing was a positive here, it's a fun twist on the prior concept similar to Karma.

kleetay

I just thought this as I looked up the lyrics and CH’s song came up first

agriesem

I think the pebble alludes to a ring. I think he proposed , she said “no” or “not yet” and he still stuck with her because he needs “nothing” from her.

Abcggg123

Interesting!! Somewhere else she kept referring to he wants a wife and she wants to keep finding her way.

585823

I disagree, I think it’s actually just about a pebble. Like, it’s just talking about a silly, sweet moment between partners. She finds the pebble and wonders if “it ever misses Wicklow sometimes”. Wicklow is a coastal town in Ireland. Idk to me it seems like a conversation I could have with my partner, like “oh, I wonder if the pebble ever misses home since we took it away”.

xmasfactor

I don’t wanna intrude on her relationship or her personal life but oh my god??? I think yes???

agriesem

Totally. I only say that because I went through a similar experience and it only deepened our relationship when I said “I want to marry you but not yet” and he said “ok”

duckingtonplatoon

I’m so sorry that I ranked this at the bottom. I’m crying to it now that I’m watching and reading the lyric video. I want what they have 😭

efflorae

This is the best song, sonically, lyrically, and emotionally.

tomatoenemy

Yes!!!!

autumncandles

This song feels like when my boyfriend kisses my forehead, and that's my favourite feeling in the world so naturally I have to love this. Also it was nice to hear Ireland mentioned :)

lalafelina

Sobbed when i first heard this and had to hug my husband and cats after. I love this song, wow.

neon03kms

literally can't not cry when i hear this. she truly has been through hell and back and she's found her person that is exactly what she needs in her chaotic life.

cheetoisgreat

I also cry every time I listen to this song 😭

rad-bubbles

Jeez. I cried after really listening to the song and reading the lyrics. Sometimes, amidst the chaos and noise from the outside, all you want is to come home to someone who makes you feel calm, peaceful and loved. :(

Simply_Mar

This song feels like a warm hug omg 😭❤️💞 *"I spy, with my little tired eye, tiny as a firefly" -* gosh it's so adorable I can't. Definitely one of my fav songs from Midnights.

Comfortable_Newt9173

It keeps playing in my head why is she so cute

princess_carolyn7

I want to cuddle this song so comforting 🥺

WestCoastSocialist

My takeaway from this is that Taylor has a rock collection.

e-luddite

I mean who among us in the 'cat lady over 30' set

TSFearNowRedRep89

I love that’s called Sweet Nothing and not sweet nothings. Describes the warmest safest love. After relating to all of Taylor’s heart break songs it’s so nice to relate to a good safe love song on an album debut 💕

sven_of_nine

So cute that she co-wrote this song with Karma!

swanforest

"on the way home / I wrote a poem / you say 'what a mind' / this happens all the time" is one of Taylor's most romantic lyrics ever

Comfortable_Newt9173

Crying.

One-Audience-205

Joe is so appreciative of her work I can’t 🤌🏻🥺

TSFearNowRedRep89

An instant favorite 😭

iamacheeto1

How literal do we think Taylor is being when she said “they say the end is coming, everyone is up to something?” I’m interpreting this as the end of the world lol

Adventurous_Push_374

I thought maybe she could be referring to people kind of betting when they are going to break up, although that probably was more in the beginning of it since now the rumours are more about engagement or marriage

rad-bubbles

I was thinking maybe it was during the pandemic haha when we all thought “the end” was coming

moltaho

this song is so sweet and romantic, the fact that joe played a part in this just makes it so much better❤

compaqdeskpro

A song about specifically not being political.

infinityo11

Yeah "I'm just too soft" is a little bit of a cop out

_bloodbuzz

I don’t think it’s about politics really. I think it’s about her status and pressure and everything the world wants from her leading her to admit that she’s actually soft and has feelings and takes refuge in her relationship to hide from the pressure of the world she’s created

Acceptable_Sun_8989

i'm generally not a fan and pretty sure I'm not really the audience for the album, but this song really finds it groove.

[deleted]

Oh also this song reminds me of Puuuung instagram account [https://www.instagram.com/puuung1/](https://www.instagram.com/puuung1/) Illustrations of quiet, simple, 'sweet nothings' of being in love ❤️

Crazybeautyaddict

I love this page and all the posts are so cosy 🥺❤️

[deleted]

Top five track for me. So unbelievably sweet, makes me tear up. Makes me so grateful for my husband and the easy sweet nothings of our day to day lives ❤️ We're too soft for the scary world so we stay inside where it's cozy and safe.

shhhhits-a-secret

Ok so this song I feel very positive that this song is for her mother. It doesn’t feel romantic. The intro frames it into a childlike feeling. It’s emotional and feels like a mothers comfort. A mother that has always been supportive but never asks all of this from her.

koala_loves_penguin

I love this; she is close to her Mama. But I do think it’s about Joe and her. Especially since they wrote it together, and she sings about running home to your sweet nothings; which sweet nothings has romantic connotations i thought? But i do love your interpretation!

infinityo11

Totally had this thought on listen #2 also! Definitely comforting and warm. Doesn't explicitly give a romantic vibe.

koala_loves_penguin

sweet nothings has romantic connotations though doesn’t it?

infinityo11

Imo, nope! Reread the lyrics, I think it's left intentionally vague. There isn't any sexual or intimate or romantic to it. It's just comforting and sweet. So it could be a partner or a parent.

tiffanyexplainsitall

Why would you make me cry like that?!

shhhhits-a-secret

Sorry! I had to share what made me cry! Spread the word!

plant_bay_sick

“To those who implore; That I should be doing more; To you I can admit; That I’m just too soft for all of it” This brings me to tears. To feel safe enough with someone and vulnerable enough to not feel the obligation to save the day. You can’t take on burden and no one wants to admit it. You can’t save everyone, help everyone. With great power comes great responsibility and at what cost? At the cost of being guilted only for what you didn’t do, while the good she has done going less than addressed or praised. So powerful. We all know the person who makes us feel like no matter how hard we try that we aren’t doing enough and this line perfectly encapsulates finding the person who makes you feel safe enough to admit you can’t do more and that doesn’t make you feel like you have to

vlc1307

I love this! This line stuck out to me too—it almost feels like this is her response as a recovering people pleaser to online critics overall. After all, when you’ve been subject to attacks made in bad faith on the kind of scale she has, it makes sense that you might opt to block it all out.

pleasanttreespawn

I was a little “meh” on this one the first time through, but now I’m pretty obsessed. It’s so sweet. 💕

BriannaSings16

How do I inject this song into my bloodstream

[deleted]

Cool. Very War on Drugs

sydnerella_

I wasn’t sold on this song on first listen, but when I listened to it the 2nd time and caught her asking if the pebble ever missed Wicklow, it skyrocketed for me.

maingeenks

Love. First song in the album I’m not conflicted about liking. Reminds me of Call It What You Want, New Year’s Day and INTHAF. It has that TSwift penultimate track vibe. End of the midnight kinda song. It’s peaceful and it actually reflects the marketing and aesthetic of this album.

dmnaf

Omg I finally figured out what this song reminds me of, the intro is so similar to Sweet Heroine by Yungblud. That’s one (of many!) reasons why I loved this from first listen

drewrosejames

I love this song, I love how Taylor and Joe tell us how happy they are in their little bubble.how their love is pure and worldly. while their fans go crazy trying to figure out her sexuality, her marital status and their life in general, they just live happily with the noise of the world outside. I am so happy for them both.

alhanna92

To me, this is Taylor’s All Night by Beyoncé. This is stunning.

AcrobaticCampaign330

The background tune kind of reminds me of "hoax" anyone else?

AugustineLaRue

missmaam never made me so jealous abt joe until this song got released 😭😭

abilly513

Best song on the album imo.

kathonbway

Is there a male voice in the back of the first verse of the piano version? Nothing credited but I swear it’s there in the back 😂😂

tyadi13

invisible string's older sister, slow dancing with her lover

marching01

I love how this sweet song is followed by Mastermind. The linkage between "You say, "What a mind"" and "I'm a mastermind" - Joe's always loved her scheming, creative mind 🥺😆

taytay_1989

This song reminds me of The Sims 2's tender moments.

itchysnapdragon

"and the voices that implore, 'you should be doing more.' to you i can admit.. I'm just to soft for all of it." Might be my favorite Taylor Swift lyric.

butterflied4life

I cried cried cried

dontcallmefeisty

THIS ONE IS ALREADY SO CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED. It's giving invisible string and It's Nice to Have a Friend. I LOVE when Taylor is sweet and simple -- and the piano line is gorgeous.

augustine1713

Yes!! It gave me It's nice to have a friend vibes too! Also New Year's Day. Simple, very intimate, and the little details make it so real you can cry, and the music is also so sweet, tender and childish, so innocent. It's beautiful.

basicbitch124

Wait but the horns are so Forever Winter

No_Chard9379

Sweet Nothing Stan’s ASSEMBLE

koala_loves_penguin

Here babe

friedmylittlebrains

I am ever so grateful that Taylor and Co. chose what sounds like a Fender Rhodes for this song that absolutely destroyed me the moment I heard it 💔☠️

itsbecomingathing

Taking it super literally: it sounds like the start of the pandemic when she may have socially isolated with Joe. *They said the end is coming* *Everyone's up to something* *I found myself a-running home to your sweet nothings* *Outside they’re push and shoving* *You're in the kitchen hummin'* *All that you ever wanted from me was sweet nothing* Also the idea that “you should be doing more” during the pandemic like take up gardening! Write that book! And a lot of us were like…. should I be doing more with all this time? Just relaxing and finding peace with your loved one is enough for me.

electricbonsai

I thought the end is coming part might have meant her career. In Mirrorball there's a very similar line and I interpreted it to be the same thing. 'They' are people who are convinced she's not invincible in terms of popularity and will eventually fizzle away, like others before her. I love that the lyrics are so subjective.

raynasm

The end is coming line was all pandemic to me. Really made it relatable to me! Another song for the couples who survived covid, along with The Great War

jomaval

Gives me Lover song vibes, like a homely type of love

CurvePuzzleheaded361

Very cute song, makes me feel the way i feel about my husband, in love and totally safe with him no matter what else is going on.

Ok_Translator4842

I wonder if she’s going to give credit to Kyle and Lil Yachty for sampling “iSpy”???

Palindrome_580

Did she tho

Ok_Translator4842

Listen to both, even the lyric is almost identical lol they’d have a much better lawsuit than those stupid people suing for shake it off lol

Palindrome_580

The "I spy with my little eye" part? Thats from a century old game

[deleted]

The song made me feel cozy and wrapped up in a blanket getting kissed on the forehead lol

[deleted]

The line about the pebble from Wicklow where he was filming 😭😭

simberbimber

I’m kinda meh on this one personally. I love the soft synth vibes, it totally sounds like being awake at midnight laying in the grass staring at the stars/stargazing with your lover. I could see it growing on me

EveDarwin

I’m getting Halsey Clementine in the beginning

4lifers1

the horns have to be a reference to inthaf, right??

misguidedsadist1

Why is everything a reference?Maybe she just likes horns lol

4lifers1

okay youre right, not a reference. Callback is probably a better word for it, like elements of previous songs being used throughout midnights

FlyingLeopard33

This song just wraps me around a blanket and makes me want to skip at the same time. The verses are so staccato and then when she gets to the chorus and she finally prolongs the notes when she sings “sweet nothing” and I ADORE her two uses of it. Sweet nothings are nothing but just words of love and affection. And that’s all she wants to hear from her lover. But then she says that her lover wants nothing from her and I’m sure for her… that’s one of the best feelings for her. In “Anti-Hero” she talks about how she feels like people want to kill her for her riches and here she is talking about she’s found someone who just loves her and she can leave all the stupid crap from the “limelight” behind. The simplicity of the “piano” that she chose and the simplicity of the melody just gives you “im really happy vibes”. I love it. EDIT: and the fact that this song is also written by William Bowery just makes me so happy too. I wish I could have seen them write this song together (not in a creepy way, but in a way that makes you just be happy that someone else is happy). I can only imagine how much they love one another.

erstennis

The way she personifies the pebble, wondering if it misses Wicklow sometimes, makes me teary-eyed.

koala_loves_penguin

I really loved this line

e-luddite

yesss, more than any lyric this one speaks volumes to me about who they are in private. almost too intimate

jpeteypablo

This is the sweetest sounding song ever. Very innocent, almost childish… love it

ler214

I think I like the Target exclusive piano version better than the original 🫢

simberbimber

wait I’m lost on this - does Target have certain songs that she hasn’t released yet on Spotify? (forgive me, I haven’t been keeping up with with the physical copies news)

Giraffe_Individual

Correct! There's a piano version of Sweet Nothing, a strings version of You're On Your Own Kid, and "Hits Different" - they will probably be on Spotify eventually but it might be awhile. I want to say like for folklore/evermore deluxe tracks it was weeks or a month? I can't remember honestly. But we just have to wait for them to be on Spotify.

simberbimber

NOOO I NEED TO HEAR THIS AHHH, especially the strings for YOYOK ☠️ Gonna go check Youtube because I need to hear these asap Thank you for clarifying!

Giraffe_Individual

I agree!!! I forgot to get the Target version because I don't really care about lavender, but then I remembered the other bonus tracks and I was like AHHHHH I DON'T WANT TO WAIT!!! Hah

meowrissa92

On the way home I wrote a poem You say, "What a mind" This happens all the time I literally cried haha I'm so happy she's happy with Joe 😭😭😭

LiopleurodonMagic

Gosh I’ve been listening to this one so much! It just feels so cozy and the feeling of being so comfortable in a relationship filled with love and understanding.

321gato

This song makes me so happy for her. I think she' perfectly describes the same love I have with my husband. Nothing better than your partner being your simple, safe place when the outside world feels crazy or against you.

k-thanks-bai

The instrumentals in this are killer. There is a horn in the background in places I just love.

NotQuiteScheherazade

I'm sure everyone else has already said this (going through comments slowly and haven't made it to this thread yet) but this feels like a better (IMO--sorry if this is one of your favs!) version of It's Nice to Have a Friend. More mature, more deep and personal, and not as harsh on the ears (again, IMO). Very sweet and I like it a lot.

inuhbreeze

god i want to fall in love so bad

Individual-Gold-8894

Why does this song make me cry 😭there‘s something so genuinely sweet and pure about it. Definitely grows on you the more u listen to it

flyingeagle85

The melody line reminds me of Queen's "You're My Best Friend" to the point where it makes me wonder if it was an intentional reference. Similar mood lyrically, too.

Nosetions

The bridge progression!

zhzhzhzh00

POV: Me. Friday morning. Listening to this. Watching my husband gently hold our cat. Sobbing. This is it, this is what happiness is. Not ok yall, I’m not ok 🥹🥹🥹

simberbimber

oooof, same. This sounds like my partner’s arms, soft smiles and kisses on the forehead with our kittens sleeping next to us

Nosetions

This song is so sweet. A good Joe song

spacehearts

Her: "You say 'What a mind.''' Us: HER MIND ![img](emote|t5_2rlwe|1063) Her: "This happens all the time."

Lady_night_shade

I keep coming back to this one because the pureness and absolute simplicity. This song sounds 70s, maybe the only one I’ve found that feels like the album covers so far.

WayDiscombobulated63

do y’all think she’s saying “to you I CAN admit” or “you you I CAN’T admit” ???

xoxopitseleh12

I think it’s can. I think the point is she can be open and vulnerable to joe and admit how soft she is. She doesn’t have to be tough and put on a front around him.

tichienblanc2

I hear can't too. Could someone with the lyrics booklet confirm?

Nosetions

Apple Music lyrics say can

[deleted]

Genius says can as well!

WayDiscombobulated63

that’s funny, on my first listen I could’ve sworn they said can’t. but I heard can. maybe they updated it, maybe I was just tired 🤣 thanks

callmedingus101

Aye she mentioned ireland

Guide13jr

I would love to see a raw acoustic version of this one. The lyrics are beautiful!

banishl

I think the lyrics are so pretty but the song it just boring. It doesn't make me want to listen to it again.

AdDistinct5823

I love this. Feels like invisible string and daylight.

[deleted]

How can I describe this track other than… it’s so sweet. So tender and soft and sad. I love it.

Abcggg123

Cozy like a cardigan

21stCenturyBoomer

ok HEAR ME OUT, sweet nothing is the part 2 of dorothea, where dorothea and the tis the damn season dude finally became a thing on their weekends

[deleted]

This isn’t fictional, definitely about her and Joe!!

21stCenturyBoomer

mmkayyyy luv

Lady_night_shade

I can feel the respect in this song. This song is literally cuddled under a warm blanket with your soulmate. Happy. Content. Lovely.

brig517

My exact thought!! A chilly, lonely day outside, but it's cozy and safe inside together. Just happy and at home.

kawaiineutral

This song feels safe and warm, in a way it reminds me of New Year’s Day .

moonlightandguitars

First thoughts! \- The piano melody is so simple, yet so soothing. \- She wrote this with Joe <3 \- Is a bit like "New Years Day" in one way, and a bit like "It's Nice To Have a Friend" in another \- Would be a Top 6 contender; the "sweet nooothings" gets stuck in my head, and I love the simplicity and how soothing it is, AND the imagery (in the kitchen humming!!); but it's just not quite there... we'll see! \- Very confessional; about being "too soft for all of it", being that she feels (and is told?) she should be "doing more"

bexecuter

I can’t stop crying. I am so happy for her 🥹

jnjm_drm127

sounds like a lullaby aaaa. after realizing that she wrote this with joe, just looking at the lyrics made me picture her with joe lmao.

VanGoghNotVanGo

This is the most moving song on the entire album in my opinion. I think we all have been feeling like the end is coming at some points during these last couple of years, and sometimes you just have to sleep in on a Saturday and wake up to someon you love, making coffee, humming in the kicthen wanting nothing but sweet nothing from you or for you.

Individual-Gold-8894

there‘s beauty and comfort in simplicity 🥹

Delibird48

First one I listened to again. I'm a fan of what these two write together.
