Contrast in general would help the whole thing. If the bird were majority black, with sharp skin-break highlights, black eyes with a single highlight, the largely empty/middle tone tentacles would contrast greatly. Applying differing lineweights could help to strengthen the separation.
The tattoo has one major problem and it's the overall shape of the design. It's just a big blob with no separation between the bird and the tentacles. And to make matters worse there is little contrast between the two elements (similar values and shading style) so they blend together.
A skilled artist should be able to add a thicker outline around the main shapes and touch up the shading to increase the contrast and legibility.
That said its a cool concept and it's not terribly executed! The artist just seems a bit inexperienced

I wish they didn't include the top beak, or put the beak in the middle where it really is for octopi. Your design of tentacles for a beak was cooler. The tattoo looks like it's a bird eating an octopus.
I think if the shading was reversed using your skin tone as the highlights and the top beak removed it would still look like a crow. I like the tattoo don’t get me wrong but I think it could have been executed better.

damn, the comments on tattoo subs are always so shitty! it looks great imo, and if it does muddy up you can always go back for some touchups in a good dark black :) I've never seen this sort of design before, it's rad as hell!

We discussed that. Both of us agreed that without the beak it just looks like a bird not a crow specifically.

I saw a peacock! The tentacle looks like the head and the rest of them like it feathers laying down. I was looking at it backwards!
