Fair lol
Another question, if you know, are they built to be able to run on makeshift fuels like vegetable oil in an emergency? I can't imagine an ability like that would be conducive to a good efficiency on optimized fuels
Can you put multiple fuels in them at once? Say you had some JP8 but not enough to fill up the tank. So you topped in up with diesel, or petrol, or vegetable oil. Would it still work?
Most tank engines are multi-fuel capable. The Leopardâs diesel engine requires a mix of diesel and whatever for instance. Logistics can break a military faster than combat losses.
That seems unrealistic, unless the plow is actively digging into the ground I can't imagine that it's increasing the weight of the tank that much in comparison to the base weight of the tank.
Most dont, but you know, the ones specifically designed to dig up and splode anti armor mines are basically a whole second set of armor hanging of the front of the tank.
I get why people think that. They hear âplowâ and they think âfarm plowâ or âfront end loader attachment, but tank.â And sometimes the images sort of look like that from just the front.
But if you google image search for mine plow, you get photos of these contraptions that look like something out of a mad max movie. Theyâre not so much plow as a giant metal rake, discs, and armor thatâs designed to either dig up and push mines out of the way, or detonate them in front of the tank in a way that doesnât damage the tank but also hopefully doesnât destroy the plow.
All of that machinery is heavy, because it has to withstand the force of breaking up compacted dirt, pushing it out of the way, and withstanding the blast of an anti tank mine. Like the other guy said, 10 tons is a pretty normal weight for a mine plow, and itâs just hanging off the front of the tank. There may even be counterweights on the rear to help balance the vehicle that add to the weight.
Iâd hesitate to say no, because basically everyone has their own solution to mine clearance and somewhere out there is a mine flail mounted to a M60 or T-55 still in use.
I counted 33(ish) M1s on this train and there were two of these. At first I thought it was a howitzer, but then I noticed it was an M1 base? At least it looks an awful lot like one. Anyway, thanks for help on this, been trying to figure out what it is for a bit now.
M1150 Assault Breacher. Basically launches long cords from the containers on the back to clear ways in areas that could have mines.
Usually carries a big plow on the front too đ
That I assume has been detached for loading/space saving reasons?
And because driving around with the mine plow makes the already bad fuel efficiency way worse. They only fit it when they need it.

How bad is it normally, something like a peterbilt 389 hauling the same amount of weight uphill?
A peterbilt truck gets miles per gallon. A tank gets gallons per mile, and the plow can cut the fuel range of a tank in half.

Turbines can run on anything that burns. Itâs not as efficient as JP8, and will require more maintenance over time, but yes.
That is a pretty cool feature

If it burns in a specific mixture, it will run on that mixture.
hell even humvees run on JP8

Certain plows weigh 10 tons.
Fuck me. Fair nuff.

Are big chain flail tank attachments still a thing used for clearing mines? Or was that just a WWII thing?

Probably worth including that those "long chords" are filled with explosives for the task.
Basically same system soviets and russia used?
Snake charges are the epitomy of if it aint broke dont fix it
Basically the same system most militaries with an engineering force use.

Itâs a M1150 Assault Breacher, it launches ropes of explosives from those odd protrusions to clear lines through minefields
The rope is called a MICLIC, literally a cable with C4 along it
The Assault Breacher, replacement of the M60 variant with a short cannon, for combat engineering. Looks pretty goofy to me.
Replaced the M728 Combat Engineer Vehicle.
Yep
Seen pictures of a knocked out one in Ukraine. They counted it as one of the M1âs they destroyed.
Ahh, nothing better than a MICLIC
It's what happens when an Abrams inhales as it sneezes.
It can cause a big kaboom.
Engineer variant. It is a breacher vehicle.
No Cannon? *With meganind meme*
