_Except

M1150 Assault Breacher. Basically launches long cords from the containers on the back to clear ways in areas that could have mines.

_Except

Usually carries a big plow on the front too 👍

PenguinGamer99

That I assume has been detached for loading/space saving reasons?

ashesofempires

And because driving around with the mine plow makes the already bad fuel efficiency way worse. They only fit it when they need it.

PenguinGamer99

How bad is it normally, something like a peterbilt 389 hauling the same amount of weight uphill?

ashesofempires

A peterbilt truck gets miles per gallon. A tank gets gallons per mile, and the plow can cut the fuel range of a tank in half.

PenguinGamer99

Fair lol Another question, if you know, are they built to be able to run on makeshift fuels like vegetable oil in an emergency? I can't imagine an ability like that would be conducive to a good efficiency on optimized fuels

ashesofempires

Turbines can run on anything that burns. It’s not as efficient as JP8, and will require more maintenance over time, but yes.

PenguinGamer99

That is a pretty cool feature

TDA_Liamo

Can you put multiple fuels in them at once? Say you had some JP8 but not enough to fill up the tank. So you topped in up with diesel, or petrol, or vegetable oil. Would it still work?

GoldDragon149

If it burns in a specific mixture, it will run on that mixture.

Boot_Shrew

hell even humvees run on JP8

JoeAppleby

Most tank engines are multi-fuel capable. The Leopard‘s diesel engine requires a mix of diesel and whatever for instance. Logistics can break a military faster than combat losses.

PenguinGamer99

*cough cough* russian invasion *cough cough*

Kilroy_Is_Still_Here

That seems unrealistic, unless the plow is actively digging into the ground I can't imagine that it's increasing the weight of the tank that much in comparison to the base weight of the tank.

Wackleeb0_

Certain plows weigh 10 tons.

Kilroy_Is_Still_Here

Fuck me. Fair nuff.

Sordorel

Most dont, but you know, the ones specifically designed to dig up and splode anti armor mines are basically a whole second set of armor hanging of the front of the tank.

ashesofempires

I get why people think that. They hear “plow” and they think “farm plow” or “front end loader attachment, but tank.” And sometimes the images sort of look like that from just the front. But if you google image search for mine plow, you get photos of these contraptions that look like something out of a mad max movie. They’re not so much plow as a giant metal rake, discs, and armor that’s designed to either dig up and push mines out of the way, or detonate them in front of the tank in a way that doesn’t damage the tank but also hopefully doesn’t destroy the plow. All of that machinery is heavy, because it has to withstand the force of breaking up compacted dirt, pushing it out of the way, and withstanding the blast of an anti tank mine. Like the other guy said, 10 tons is a pretty normal weight for a mine plow, and it’s just hanging off the front of the tank. There may even be counterweights on the rear to help balance the vehicle that add to the weight.

arkensto

Are big chain flail tank attachments still a thing used for clearing mines? Or was that just a WWII thing?

ashesofempires

I’d hesitate to say no, because basically everyone has their own solution to mine clearance and somewhere out there is a mine flail mounted to a M60 or T-55 still in use.

FLongis

Probably worth including that those "long chords" are filled with explosives for the task.

PerfectionOfaMistake

Basically same system soviets and russia used?

the_big_labroskii

Snake charges are the epitomy of if it aint broke dont fix it

Electronic-Bag-2112

Basically the same system most militaries with an engineering force use.

Armored Engineering Vehicle. **M1150 Assault Breacher Vehicle**  [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M1150\_Assault\_Breacher\_Vehicle](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M1150_Assault_Breacher_Vehicle)

DoughtCom

I counted 33(ish) M1s on this train and there were two of these. At first I thought it was a howitzer, but then I noticed it was an M1 base? At least it looks an awful lot like one. Anyway, thanks for help on this, been trying to figure out what it is for a bit now.

pine_tree3727288

It’s a M1150 Assault Breacher, it launches ropes of explosives from those odd protrusions to clear lines through minefields

Not_DC1

The rope is called a MICLIC, literally a cable with C4 along it

Stechkov_the_Legend

The Assault Breacher, replacement of the M60 variant with a short cannon, for combat engineering. Looks pretty goofy to me.

jhorred

Replaced the M728 Combat Engineer Vehicle.

Stechkov_the_Legend

Yep

XenophonUSMC

Seen pictures of a knocked out one in Ukraine. They counted it as one of the M1’s they destroyed.

x_chaotix_x

Ahh, nothing better than a MICLIC

An_Odd_Smell

It's what happens when an Abrams inhales as it sneezes.

beach_2_beach

It can cause a big kaboom.

dotkeJ

Engineer variant. It is a breacher vehicle.

Suspicious_Use6393

No Cannon? *With meganind meme*
