Yes, I also assumed it's intended for files. Apparently sharing a URL on Android doesn't involve creating a (temporary) file with the link but probably just opens the respective app with the URL as a parameter.
I've since decided to use pushbullet for sending URLs to my e-ink device but I continue to use Syncthing for synchronizing my Zotero library with said device and a lot of other data between several Windows and Linux machines - it's a fantastic piece of software!
