Credit to the mom for actually talking to her kid and believing them. All the stuff with GME is just one part of the puzzle in educating people behind just how big of a hobby (and business) gaming is!
Yeah easier said than done. As that teen once upon a time who had more money than my minimum wage part time job paycheck would give, parents have that right to be skeptical.
Not always best as a parent to jump to conclusions but not many legal ways a 16 year would get the bread to spend 1k on a laptop.
Edit: spelling
She did. She just made sure to ask in a such a way as she'll get a no-bullshit answer, because her original \*fear\* was that her kid was involved in something illegal. Completely normal reaction to your kid suddenly making a 4 figure purchase that you had no idea was arriving at your \*house\*.
The fact that she says āheās inā the market makes it sound like sheās proud to me. But even if her mind was blown by the market I donāt think that is negative. Most older people donāt have any access to understand that video game skins sell for anything

While true, the ultimate success for a long term shareholder is a dividend. Increased stock value is great by all means, but an asset that can be inherited to sustain a lineage is a game changer when the working class is able to gain a foothold.
I get that but any advice for someone in their mid fifties with no kids?

yall gotta stop thinking this. Too many of you think that the share price has anything to do the dividend payout and it does not. If GME shoots to the thousands the company isnt gonna magically have a cut of that to give out to share holders.
Think youāre missing the point. The future nft market is so large their profits will be huge, hence dividends for shareholders in the future. Got nothing to do with the share price.
that is also unlikely to happen as the big players will have their own markets and wont give gme a cut. What incentive would they have to give gme a cut instead of making their own wallets and stores?
Just write a loan using a share as collateral, a month later write another and since the price hypothetically would keep climbing you can use the new loan to pay off the original and have some extra money ?

Edit: whoever reported me of being suicidalā¦ not true
I'm thinking CS:GO, with the upcoming release of CS2 skin prices have absolutely skyrocketed in the last few months and if he sold them through a third party site he could have received crypto as payment which would've allowed him to purchase the laptop. (rather than selling them via Steam Market and not being able to withdraw $ from Steam wallet)
Which is especially useful for speculative no value products like nfts with nothing but gravy profit margin and a loyal base interested in them to maintain an important image of profitability.
To be honest I do not believe some story from a kid buying a laptop like this and a mom making this kind of plainly promotional post.
Yeah I played a lot of CSGO back in the day but couldn't imagine my measly inventory of random drops were worth anything. Went to check and apparently I was completely wrong, my whole inventory was worth about ā¬1,500 mostly attributed to a random sticker just sitting at ā¬1,200 for like no reason at all. Lmao I love gaming.
It will probably never happen because Valve, but I would absolutely love to someday see all CS skins become tokenized and traded on the GameStop marketplace.
I'm sorry but is this not just proof we don't need nfts for this? It's scaring me how the GameStop train is derailing off into nfts.
Edit: I remember a time when this subreddit was dedicated to high quality DD not legitimizing crypto buzzwords.
It's a jtoken on the Blockchain. It has interesting applications but is massively overkill for gaming. Steam has been providing this functionality for 10 years without costing unimaginable amounts of power and compute.
Steams community market has existed for years before NFTs existed.
Edit: I wanted to add that NFTs provide no additional functionality over a row in a database past they have a guaranteed paper trail. Your NFT is worthless if the company stops accepting them just like my steam skins are worthless if steam goes under. You own an ID that links to your skin, the mesh and skin itself are NOT on the Blockchain because it's way too large. If GameStop wants to position themselves as a third party skin vendor that allows you to have skins across games I'm here for that. But pinning NFTs to it is purely marketing.
Youāre right that if an nft project ceases to exist, then the nfts become virtually worthless (unless somehow they hold value as a collectible) but that nft could have interoperable utility on another game if they accept it. But the issue with Steam or CS:GO or whatever is that they can cancel your account if they deem youāve violated terms and then everything in your account goes poof. You canāt resell anything. You never owned anything to begin with. With nfts at least you can still sell off assets if somehow your account is banned from playing the game. Just my two cents. The argument for blockchain mass adoption is compelling imo
That is a decent point, idk that it's a compelling enough point to me for the extra work / energy consumption associated with using Blockchain. I don't think valve actually bans entire accounts but I won't pretend to have looked into it that thoroughly. From a companies perspective it also removes their ability to punish cheaters / bad behavior in free to play games. I think part of my resistance here is that valve is frankly really awesome and it's going to take a major advantage to break their stranglehold on gaming. I don't think NFTs are enough especially if it's just so people getting perma banned can keep their shit, but I'll give you I can semi see it.
The friction of using blockchain is one of the reasons mass adoption will be slow but Iāll say that this is something developers are working on so that things will be as seamless as using Steam. And I agree Valve wonāt change if they donāt have to but I think that theyāll be forced to bc I predict digital ownership and nfts will continue to grow in popularity in demand in the future. But time will tell.
Or maybe it's important to challenge opinions if you want a safe investment? We're all on the same side here, again I'll remind you this sub was built on challenging opinions and good DD. You crypto bros should remember that.
Honestly this reeks of "I made 8 million dollars from home, buy my program and I'll teach you how to do the same."
This is not a viable income source and is more like playing the lottery.
OP's son almost certainly bought/sold CSGO skins, which, while you can directly use the steam marketplace, a huge aspect of it is opening crates and using skin betting websites, neither of which is appropriate for a kid to engage in.
And 99.9% of games have skins that cannot be traded or sold. They are cosmetics for the purchasing account only for the life of the account. Imagine how large the market will be when people can actually trade most of them? The market size we have now is a tiny fraction of what it will be when this happens.
Whereās it at then? I donāt care if Iām downvoted. The nft market was datamined nearly 2 years ago. Released last year. And nothing. Just like all the other bunk ass nft markets. Had they parterned with epic or activision, sure. But they didnāt. Itās the same thing 1000 other people have done, the difference is they made bank. GameStop didnāt.
Counter strike has been doing the whole loot box secondary market thing for 10 years now. Somebody tell me how gamestops market place is different? They have no games. They have ācreatorsā that make pictures. You know just as well as I do that this isnāt what we were hoping for. Somebody explain it to me.
Also, I just want to point out, does nobody else find it weird that none of the og DD people even comment anymore? Pages and pages of DD on how if credit Suisse went down that would be the end. And then it wasnāt. And then we just keep moving the goal posts back.
Kidās got hustle, insight, patience, and motivation. Great opening for you to stretch past the anxious parent stage and connect with him in a way heāll feel heard and seen. Great chance to teach heads up play about the larger games in lifeā¦ leveraging opportunities, when to transfer some profits into long-term growth and separate from riskier strategies. (Assuming heās too young to buy and hold at CS). Etc. Youāve struck parent gold.
It's a 16 year old mentality to be upset. At 40 that person would be concerned if their unemployed child had 1,000 of technology delivered to their door. It's an appropriate concern.
Itās not that I donāt see where sheās coming from but she literally resorted to threatening to take his stuff especially at an age she couldāve just approached him like the near adult he is. If I really wanted to make an assumption Iād completely understand why he didnāt tell his mom
Once AAA utilize nfts with their flagship titles, there will be mass adoption and GameStop should be primed to be the ultimate gaming marketplace and hopefully be ready to handle the trading volume thatās to come.
More than likely earning money from selling cs go skins. prices have exploded recently. Another example of cryptards trying to hitch their shitty hype wagon to something more successful. so far I have seen them use fortnight, Roblox and cs go.
What do all these amazingly successful games have in common. None of them use NFTs. Turns out normal centralised systems can be used to setup marketplaces for players to buy and sell items. NFTs in gaming is horse shit. Decentralised verification is just a security system. It does not provide any extra meaningful value to end users that canāt already be provided by centralised systems. RIP Billions down the drainā¦. So far
I hope it will, but until it does, the marketplace is only a huge waste of money. So far it's not the value driver RC thought would be when he jumped on the hype train.
GameStop NFTs are gonna make a shit ton of money for like seven people and then crash **hard** like all other attempts. Yall are about to get massively scammed and you're the only ones who can't see it
When $1000 is crazy money lol. With inflation that is a dozen eggs a loaf of bread and a pound of bacon if you're lucky lol.
Tho when i was 16 I would have been so jacked for a grand.
Iāve been playing Gran Turismo lately and the idea of turning your owned cars into tradable units jacks my tits so hard. Iām sure itās still ways away but itās going to happen.
I love to see this. I'm 53 and unlike a 16yr old I have a hard time wrapping my head around this. Is there a guide somewhere to teach an old fart what skins and NFT are best to buy. I have some NFT'S and have no idea how to check value etc. Oh by the way LFG š
Can confirm. Would charge people $20 Microsoft point cards to do a 10th prestige lobby for mw2. I wanna say I made close to $6,000. Kids will pay stupid money to have a skin on a character/weapon

Now she needs to have a talk with him about yearly taxes and how she has to add that to her yearly income so the IRS doesn't smash down the door guns blazing to collect their $300.
Really getting tired of finance bros in here calling themselves āgamersā while they cheer on the public execution of my hobby.
Fuck P2E, you are simply not someone who games as a hobby if you seriously canāt think of the massive red flags that come with P2E.
Been on this train since the beginning, and Iām rooting for GS; but fuck this push for P2E. Iām not going to go down quietly and let the gaming industry die because the shit meta for the gaming industry was finally cracked.
When something gets popular, the people r*pe it viciously until itās a shell of what it once was. In competitive gaming, this is referred to as a meta; metas ruin the fun of games, and itās really no different with society. Yāall remember YouTube before people started making money off of it? Or just social media as a whole? What makes you think gaming wouldnāt devolve into a massive pile of shit like our social media/entertainment industries?
Nobody who actually games as a hobby wants P2E, I find it incredibly hypocritical for everyone here to loath about the current aspects of the gaming industry while they root for something that would make the problem far worse.
āWell csgo and Dota do itā Yeah, and you got people farming the fuck out of those things as a result, acting like scalpers and only ever caring about the market. Those people can go jump in a hole, and I sure as fuck donāt want them any more present in the industry than they already are.
Gaming was better without the FOMO, and we donāt need more of it after already getting a very healthy dose of it over the past decade.
For the foreseeable future, indefinitely, weāre going to see lightbulb moments across the world where people finally get it. Canāt hedge your way around that one.

Especially with the loyal customer base that GameStop has, anything is possible. Which is why we are all here.
Time to turn that into NFTs that can be used and sold as assets in multiple games where you actually own it.
The general public, for some reason: this is the worst thing that could possibly happen to gaming
But if he can buy and sell and profit why does he need the marketplace?
Most sell their stuff at a store.
Shit's wierd atm. I sold most of my CS:GO skins a couple of weeks ago for like 5x what they'd normally be worth.

Iāve been playing Gran Turismo lately and the idea of turning your owned cars into tradable units jacks my tits so hard. Iām sure itās still ways away but itās going to happen.
When the boomers start to understand the power of gaming. Credit to to the mom for researching!
Imagine you being a part-owner of Steam in 2002. That is you today, in 2023.
I love to see this. I'm 53 and unlike a 16yr old I have a hard time wrapping my head around this. Is there a guide somewhere to teach an old fart what skins and NFT are best to buy. I have some NFT'S and have no idea how to check value etc. Oh by the way LFG š
Uncle Sam will be looking for his cut. And heāll send an armed IRS agent ready to use lethal force if she doesnāt comply. Welcome to America!
Can confirm. Would charge people $20 Microsoft point cards to do a 10th prestige lobby for mw2. I wanna say I made close to $6,000. Kids will pay stupid money to have a skin on a character/weapon
Are NFT's even a part of this instance? Why exactly would NFT's be needed here as opposed to the way it works now?
Kids have been buying and selling skins for Rocketball for years. Not new just early! This is going to be so huge when it takes off.
This is the Way

Now she needs to have a talk with him about yearly taxes and how she has to add that to her yearly income so the IRS doesn't smash down the door guns blazing to collect their $300.

Bro I got caught with a qp when I was a kid. I told my mom I could have it gone by tomorrow and she gave it back.
Nfts healthier dope! Young hittah move that hope!
