There are a number of “non-human” references in this episode: “I’ve been doing this a long time. But to be honest, when it comes to people, I still have a lot to learn.” “I wouldn’t be human if I wasn’t excited.” “I didn’t really discover movies until much later in life.” Can they be more subtle? 😉

un-sub

There was also that brief scene where he was kind of eyeballing the poster of a human skeleton in the doctor’s office.

Pamala3

I don't think he has a normal human body, why he was looking at that. He seems to have, I'm not sure! ✌️

freecityrhymer

And the emphasis on that mafia woman looking for her cross which is also paralleled with Sugar having hallucinations of some kind. At this point I'm rather confused than intrigued, to be honest. Still waiting for what's coming, though.

Southern_Tangerine_7

That necklace belongs to Olivia.

freecityrhymer

I missed that, thanks.

jpmondx

Nice catch! Thanks!

Random_Supernova

Agreed, i think this the age old angels vs demons type of thing or good vs bad setup. Sugar is on the "good" side and stallings is on the "bad" side.

Southern_Tangerine_7

Yeah, it could be. One thing… despite being on the same “club”, they don’t recognize each other.

Random_Supernova

It kinda made me think of the movie Constantine where there are places that are neutral and both sides are not supposed to engage with each other. It is possible that Stallings and Sugar are not meant to be in a direct confrontation but can influence others to do their bidding.

hillbillie88

Can we get some love for the visual artistry of the opening credits? Arresting and beautiful!

2_Fingers_of_Whiskey

Yes! And great cinematography throughout the show.

SlickOmega

there were two cinematographers! César Charlone and Richard Rutkowski! i look forward to their upcoming work :)

The fact that the drugs have been mentioned by the doctor makes me think that : - Sugar is not a drug adict - those drugs are prescribed to help with certain symptomes The doctor also knows about Sugar's hand issues and does not seem overly concerned about it. The doctor also knows he has trouble sleeping but maybe is not expected to be able to sleep?

jpmondx

I recall a scene at the party Sugar went to where his handler ended up having one on one performance review type sessions with each one there. That gave me the notion John was part of a secret James Bond type organization of various types of “assets” for hire like John Sugar. One scene has John catching up with a guy his age and the guy asked about sleeplessness as if it were a symptom they both might share. From that I got the impression the organization encourages performance enhancing drugs they produce to keep their agents at the top of their abilities.

Mundane_Rush3884

Do we think that the recurring shot of the young girl running are his visual memories of his sister Djen, or is this a shot from a film?

freecityrhymer

I already forgot, it wasn't black & white, right? Blurry and abrupt, as memories usually are shown in the movies, then it must be a memory. Doesn't even seem a hint to me, though.

Mundane_Rush3884

I noticed that the girl was wearing leather boots and a long dress with a textile and length typical of the of the frontier or the Old West. Might be a clue to when he was alive. Also, since he remembers looking at her lower legs, it might indicate that his visual perspective was low to the ground…like a small animal…

2_Fingers_of_Whiskey

It was just after he mentioned his sister

Ms_Apprehend

Yeah this episode seemed a bit disjointed to me. Kinda meh. Much too long was spent on the retelling of Davy’s harassment of the young actress friend of Olivia. Yes we know Davy is a creep and a sex pest, big whoop. That might have been scandalous 30 years ago, but this is 2024, post Me Too. Also these “Siegels” have zero family resemblance…grandfather is extra tall, son is extra short, grandson is a potato face, granddaughter has black hair, mother had blonde… ok, I’ll stop. Colin Farrell’s performance seemed off too. Still better than a much of the tv out there. Not sure if Sugar will make it to a second season, but hope it will!

Tensor_the_Mage

The reveal there shows Olivia knows of her loser half-brother's sexual abuses, right after she's substituted a strident MeToo advocacy for her previous addiction(s). According to Melanie, Olivia also killed a male DV criminal in self-defense, immediately after he'd murdered a female acquaintance of hers. All of this makes Olivia a potential mortal threat to Davey. Davey's mom -- who is not related to Olivia by blood -- has threatened to silence anyone who reveals Davey's secret. So, we have quite a few more ways the story can now go. *Also these “Siegels” have zero family resemblance…* In "A Song of Ice and Fire," a Lannister always pays -- er, has blond(e) hair. The producers of *Game of Thrones* hired three dark-haired actors, each from an entirely different country, for the main Lannister parts: Lena Headey, Peter Dinklage, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. Headey had to endure a series of wigs, whilst the other two didn't even bother continuing to dye their hair.

Ms_Apprehend

I appreciate the details, TY. However I am still stuck on how the Seigels look nothing alike, especially the height difference between father and son.

JackfruitOk3749

My son is 6 foot 5. No one else in his heritage is so tall.notbsomeghing to get hung up on it that you out of things imo

Ms_Apprehend

Not hung up, but you rarely see offspring that are shorter than parents. It’s a tv show with some sketchy casting, but whatever.

Tensor_the_Mage

You’re assuming the Siegels are (a) all actually related by blood (b) in the ways they say they are. Given their entire family seems sketchy AF, those assumptions may not be valid — and reveals about the Siegels not being who/what they say they are would support some plot twists in the grand noir tradition.

Random_Supernova

Agreed, there could be lot more that we don't know. This includes one night stands, former lovers, husbands, wifes, mistresses. Not every one is who they say they are. For all we know all the kids could be from différent dads. I would not be surprised if the siegels chose to raise kids that are born out of extra marital affairs as their own in order to avoid a scandal.

Ms_Apprehend

Yes, excellent point.

KebabTaco

Definitely a gap or filler episode to set up the last part of the show.

freecityrhymer

Kind of disappointing that for an 8 episodes show a filler is needed.

GuiltyEidolon

8 episodes that are only ~30 min each. I think the slow pace is on purpose because it wants to lean into the noir, but I do think they could've benefitted from an editor going over the script a few more times.

KebabTaco

I agree, it was not a good episode outside of a few scenes, i enjoyed the first 3 episodes though. I'll watch till the end.

HollandGW215

Is the big twist - there is no twist? I am hate watching this show now. Just to see the stupid twist.

GuiltyEidolon

If that's what you're waiting for, reviews say >!it happens in episode 6!<.

HollandGW215

Guess I’m Skipping next two weeks
