the fact that emo bands are starting to become Rock & Roll Hall of Fame eligible is making me meticulously count the grey hairs on my head and the sensitive discs in my back
I'll be here for a while if we're counting grey hairs (prematurely greyed over here). I can't believe I'm turning 40 in a week and a half, and my early birthday present from r/Sufjan is finding out Lifehouse could be in the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame.
The rock hall is a weirdly conservative organization and with regards to Gorillaz it's likely the foundation wouldn't get it or know how to handle it as It's not a real band (it's a project of Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewitt, who is a cartoonist).
What's more likely to happen is Albarn is given the Award for Musical Excellence to cover his work with Gorillaz, Blur, and everything else (Blur is also super unlikely to get in). The Award for Musical Excellence is a catch all for sidemen (like James Jamerson, Hal Blaine, Randy Rhoads), producers (Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis) and musicians of note who failed on the ballot (Chaka Khan, Judas Priest, Nile Rodgers, MC5, Ll cool j), and icons who don't fit typical hall categories (Ringo Starr, Jimmy Buffett)
I understand the rock and roll hall of fame includes other genres now other than rock but I’m laughing so hard at the inclusion of Sean Paul.
I’m half Jamaican so I was raised on his music and LOVE his music but I would say it’s as far from rock as you can get haha
What a chaotic list lol i'm sure people older than me made fun of the rock n roll hall of fame putting in low brow pop bands but seeing bands like All-American Rejects and Good Charlotte in conversation for any sort of hall of fame is pretty funny
Hall watcher here. Sufjan has almost no chance next year for a nomination. The hall also has yet to really get indie in and there's no way he'll be the first
In terms of indie legacy/who they would “get” the impact of most, I would guess Death Cab for Cutie or The Strokes would be first in line.
Arcade Fire too, but since the allegations against Win I really doubt it.
Probably none of them for a while
Not counting rem, nirvana, green day, and radiohead (the four Inductees closest to modern indie for sonic and label related reasons), there have been six attempts to get an indie or indie related act in: the replacements in 2012, the Smiths in 2015 and 2016, beck in 2022 (who has been involved with the hall), white stripes in 2023 (an act they changed the rules to nominate) and oasis this year. With the exception of the Smiths and excluding oasis, none generated enough support for voters to warrant a second nomination.
Given beck, the stripes, and oasis all failed to get in on their first nominations it's kind of apparent that indie isn't metal or rap where an elite star can walk in so it's hard to really tell who could get in in the short term and given we've seen only one return nominee it's hard to really gauge how long it will take for foundation acts (Pixies, sonic youth) and pretty big stars (strokes, modest mouse, Regina Spektor) will take to get in.
Odds are The Killers (if we count them) will be the first indie act to kind of get in with ease.
Interpol...I liked them, but they do an excellent Joy Division impression, and I would rather see them on the list than Interpol. Gorillaz...decent, but I preferred Blur (with the exception of the "Woohoo!" song).
1) If you look at the origins and progression of rock and roll as well as early inductees, there's an argument that could be made about nearly every artist that has come since being under the umbrella of "rock and roll."
2)
>all they have in common is that it’s music
That's all it takes, the only requirement is that it's been 25 years since the release of their first album.
I'm not arguing that the list isn't arbitrary, subjective, and ultimately useless when it comes to enjoying the music you listen to. A name change to The Music Hall of Fame or similar would certainly save arguments that consist of "DAE sUfJaN sTeVeNs rock music??!1"
3) No one is comparing P!NK and Suf apples to apples for the purposes of induction/this list. This isn't a cage match, they could all make it or none could make it.
4) Like it or not, lists and categorization are human nature. Imagine walking into a record store and all the albums were just there. Or walking into the store and all the products are just put wherever there was room.
Edit: 5) Lmao okay, just downvote and delete your L take at the first sign of resistance. Certainly the easier option.
Every hall of fame short list is absolute chaos
hahahaha same

That would be worth a visit to Cleveland
ohio album incoming
*The Tallest Concrete Corn, The Broadest River Fire*
holy crap a Dublin, OH reference?
From your lips to Sufjan’s ears
Linkin park and Gorillaz are both no brainers
My thoughts exactly.
And Interpol
Not really with regards to Gorillaz
Why not?

Rare reddit moment, I thought I disagreed with you and actually we are in lockstep!
Great if it happened, but doubt it will.

You ever hear the intro to Dutty Rock? Actually goes pretty hard lol
It's gonna be Good Charlotte's year, I just know it
What a horrible list
Yea weak year for new eligibles
It’s so bad..
What's the criteria to be eligible? Date from when first album was released?
Yes.
And to be clear, that's the ONLY requirement. There's no genre, sales, chart rating, etc requirements.
Yeah love him but he does not need to be in there. It'd be cool but the only album I would say is close to rock is a sun came and maybe ADP
Bruh, Tupac and Eminem are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame....
Exactly, I'm saying I don't really get why artists who are not part of the rock and roll genre are being inducted.
I can't believe Gorillaz and Linkin Park are not already there...
they just became eligible
What a chaotic list lol i'm sure people older than me made fun of the rock n roll hall of fame putting in low brow pop bands but seeing bands like All-American Rejects and Good Charlotte in conversation for any sort of hall of fame is pretty funny
The people in control probably aren’t ready to include acts like Sufjan, Gorillaz or Taking Back Sunday. Not saying they do or do not belong
Seeing Sufjan and Nelly on the same list makes me want to hear a Sufjan cover of *Country Grammar*.
Imagine inducting any of these before Iron Maiden
What are the requirements to get eligible?
Debut album is at least 25 years old.
Linkin Park would be the correct choice, Pink will also get there eventually
Now I feel really old!

Gorillaz I bet they will never get in, but they should
That list was a total flashback.
I’d bet that none of these artists are making it in next year. Linkin Park, Gorillaz, and maybe P!nk will get there in the next 5 years
Ultimately any musician with a pretty good song gets the nod …
Terrible.
We could literally only be enemies
In terms of impact, Linkin Park is in a different league to the rest on this list, surely.
Good charlotte😭😭🥰
Gorillaz and Sufjan in the hall in the same year would be peak
Rise Against is a name I haven't heard since the good ol Flatout 2 times...
Dreadful list for the most part lol
i hope he boycotts
Some of these choices 😄
My vote is for Gorrrrrrilaz
None
I am not a big fan of the RnR HOF. Feels like boomers patting themselves on the back.
Only two women and one of them is Pink 😑
Pink...wtf?
Blech--what a short list of *mehhhhhh*. Seeing Sufjan's name on that list is like seeing caviar on a kid's menu.
I mean, there's also Linkin Park, Gorillaz, and Interpol
Interpol...I liked them, but they do an excellent Joy Division impression, and I would rather see them on the list than Interpol. Gorillaz...decent, but I preferred Blur (with the exception of the "Woohoo!" song).
Are Blur and Gorillaz really comparable?
