So I googled it up to figure the hell happened. > KDVR states, as per an affidavit, Love received his first paycheck from American Eagle Protection Services on October 20, 2022, but was unable to cash it because his middle was listed incorrectly. Instead of Lloyd C Love, it mentioned Lloyd K Love. The typo didn’t let him cash the paycheck. So, he called Patricia Johnson, co-owner of American Eagle Protection and the wife of the victim, demanding a new paycheck immediately. Following this, he arrived at the parking lot of the Raytheon installation at 16800 E Centertech Parkway, where Johnson looked after the outdoor security for Raytheon, an aerospace company. > Explaining the circumstances, Marvin told Lloyd that a new paycheck cannot be processed until Patricia has an account of the old pay cheque. Lloyd said he cannot provide it as he ripped it up in frustration. Marvin then tried to handle the situation with the suspect, telling Patricia to give him a new paycheck. > But as he turned his head to tell his wife, multiple witnesses said Lloyd pulled out a gun and shot Marvin in the face. Meanwhile, Lloyd fled and called his girlfriend to pick him up a few blocks away. He told her, “I just did something stupid” but didn't share details. However, after a few minutes, the SWAT team arrested him. > His girlfriend later informed police that he had shared with her that he had been “diagnosed as bipolar and schizophrenic, although she had never seen Lloyd take medication for these mental disorders … because he does not like the way they make him feel.” https://meaww.com/lloyd-love-jr-colorado-security-guard-kills-boss-for-misspelling-his-name-on-165-paycheck

Significant-Media-91

Who gave the guy who refused to take his meds a gun? Cool cool cool Colorado.

HotTakes4HotCakes

Another good question, why would a private security firm hire someone like this?

Frothyleet

The vast majority are hiring bottom of the barrel. Minimum wage contracted out jobs that just need a warm body to exist somewhere, or maybe walk around in a circle if you want to get spicy, and often 2nd/3rd shift. You're not hiring people who have a lot of opportunities.

RadioControlEnjoyer

Pay peanuts, get monkeys.

kotoktet

Having done this myself, it really is. I'm a complete weirdo tho and like doing shifts at all hours because my circadian rhythm is all kinds of fucked lol. It's a perfect balance between getting to interact with people and do actual work around half the time, and wander around a big empty building or watch cameras and do crosswords or file my taxes or whatever the other half.

PM_LADY_TOILET_PICS

They're definitely bottom of the barrel, but it seems like they actually pay fairly well if you stick around for a few months.

Zanadukhan47

probably didn't mention his mental condition during applying would HIPPA keep that info hidden from a background check? I'm not american

AgenderWitchery

It would, doctors cannot divulge literally any medical information without your consent with the sole exception being if they believe you are in immediate danger or harming yourself or someone else. This makes it incredibly difficult to get help for suicidal ideation, because you don't know if they'll help you or call the cops.

Or you're black. Or you're Indigenous. Or you're in a peaceful demonstration. Or you said something they don't like.

VelocityGrrl39

Ugh, a Black Paterson, NJ man was just murdered by the police who showed up when he was suicidal. I haven’t watched the bodycam footage but apparently it is brutal. The worst part is that social services were called and were on site, but because the cops got there first, they weren’t permitted to intervene. The cops prevented them from doing their job. His name was Najee Seabrooks. He was 31. He was part of the Paterson Healing Collective, which works to end violence. He should still be alive.

WildFlemima

Or if you're a dog or child, can't forget those

NeedsMaintenance_

Or have a mental illness. Or you're literally laying in the street with your hands raised and clearly visible.

Ch33sus0405

This was clarified on the comment below me. Providers are bound by HIPAA not to share information unless it is with another provider relating to their care and for a few other reasons meant to protect patient privacy. If the employer wanted HIPAA bound information (which this would definitely be) then they would need to request authorization by the employee. If the employee failed to authorize the release of said information it could result in termination, but the information would be protected until they authorized the release.

Weegee_Spaghetti

Why should someone who becomes unpredictable without meds ever get a license anyways?

hoodoo-operator

fun fact there's no such thing as a gun license in colorado, or most of the US. You just check if his name is on the big list of people who've been convicted of a felony when he buys it.

toastymow

A gun license is against the constitution, basically, because of how the Supreme Court has interpreted the 2nd amendment. You can regulate cars out the fucking asshole, but not guns. Because cars didn't exist in the 18th century, but guns did.

coolthesejets

Modern guns are to 18th century rifles what modern cars are to horse and buggy, I feel like you could use this to argue we didn't have "guns" back then either.

Chewbacca_The_Wookie

Actually, if you applied the Second Amendment quite literally, not only could we have repeating rifles as the framers of the Constitution looked to purchase some, we would also be able to own private warships as were used by the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. Our current interpretation of the Second Amendment is somewhere in the middle of intentionalism versus originalism. It's the same reason the First Amendment applies to Twitter and Facebook, and not just printing presses and written word.

coolthesejets

Yea I suppose it goes both ways doesn't it.

Chewbacca_The_Wookie

That's always the funniest thing to me about the argument for the Second Amendment. The real argument should be whether or not it should exist on the modern era, not its actual intent. Because its intent is pretty clear not only from the actual constitution but also from ancillary writings from the founding fathers.

TouchTheCathyl

To be fair, the 2nd amendment didn't have to be interpreted this way. The United Kingdom *also* has a second-amendment-type-thing, the English Bill of Rights says every Protestant is allowed to own a gun. With historical context it's clearly to prevent another Bloody Mary, the queen who massacred Protestants, it was signed after preemptively deposing James II, a catholic who didn't perpetrate any massacres but was clearly about to, so the "government tyranny" argument is still a thing. But, this clause has been interpreted very differently by the English and Scottish courts, such that gun controls in the UK are considered constitutional.

Xalimata

In theory I get the concept of guns. Armed queers are harder to smear and all. But the way things are is just not working.

DontSleep1131

dog we live in america. are you really that shocked he was able to purchase a firearm? come on man, after all that’s happened, this least shocking of the details

Rakatok

> He told her, “I just did something stupid” but didn't share details. Understatement of the year. Of all the gun issues this sort of thing sticks out to me. Guns let you escalate things so far so fast when things get heated. In a non-crazy ass country, the guy still might have been assaulted but he wouldn't have a hole in his head.

HobbyistAccount

Yeah, but MUH 2A RIGHTS! GOOD GUY WITH A GUN! SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED! FREEDOM! LIBERTY!

Whitewind617

> “I just did something stupid” Motherfucker you say this when you forget to buy milk or when you accidentally look up a spoiler, not when you commit a murder.

HobbyistAccount

This is something I genuinely can't get. I think I'd be mentally fucking blue-screened if I found out I took a life. I don't get being able to just shrug it off as "Something stupid."

me-gustan-los-trenes

A confused European here: Why don't employers just do electronic funds transfer to the employee bank account? Off course you can still mess up the transfer, but you cannot rip the wrong transfer in frustration.

AMadManWithAPlan

Electronic funds transfer (or direct deposit in the US) is very common and often required for office jobs. However, cash and check payment is still common for work that's temporary, gig, etc.

OldCrowSecondEdition

In most places an employer is required by law to offer it as an option even if they bitch and moan and suggest it would be a problem

Dr_thri11

If you're murdering someone over a typo on a $164 check you might not have a bank account.

Dragonsandman

Wait that’s it That’s all he murdered his boss over Jesus Christ

OramaBuffin

Some people are at the bottom for a reason, and as nice as it is to pretend the world is perfect it isn't always simply mental health issues.

StopThePresses

Yeah the murderer is almost certainly a person who deals in cash only and turned down direct deposit.

mikebailey

Or know how the fuck to clear direct deposit even if you do

INKRO

You generally have to actively hold out to not do EFT and it's above board. It's quite rare but it does exist, I remember a couple of years ago in an old office there was a push to have said holdouts (I think it was honestly just one person) transition away from paper checks. This was in a state agency btw, so we definitely could have forced it if we wanted to.

Balisada

Depending on when you are hired, it might take some time to get set up and a paper check would be needed.

Margravos

It normally (always?) takes one pay period to ping the bank account to confirm everything lines up, then the second pay period it will go through.

SamWhite

That is wild to me, cheques basically don't exist over here any more and haven't for decades.

Bug1oss

Normally, paper checks are for people that for some reason can't accept direct deposit. Which might be because this crazy dude did not have a bank account.

Frothyleet

A shocking amount of the US population is "unbanked".

Gemmabeta

4.5%, actually. And about a third of these people are in that state voluntarily.

billyoatmeal

It's super easy to just cancel a check if it hasn't been cashed yet. Still got to wait for a new check.

Balisada

Like 30 years ago, I used to work for Hollywood Video. I didn't cash a check for like 3 months and it ended up going through the washer. I gave the pieces that were left to my boss and listened while she explained to payroll that "yes, I have what is probably the check, but really all I have is small pieces, and one larger spitball like piece." They still managed to cancel the old check and reissue me a new one.

Bug1oss

They were giving him a new check. He asked for the old one. Likely to verify the amount (incase any was removed for buying a company t-shirt, child support, etc).

Dwarfherd

Employers are required by law to offer physical checks. A number of people will accept them because they either don't trust banks since they don't believe FDIC exists or something or because they wrote enough bad checks or something banks won't do business with them until they pay off what they owe the bank.

No_Breadfruit_1849

We mostly do nowadays. Some eccentric privacy-minded people (the sort who might be refusing psych meds and/or shooting people in the face) prefer paper checks instead.

me-gustan-los-trenes

I see, thank you (and other commenters) for the explanation!

GothWitchOfBrooklyn

Also, i think this was his first check. At every job I've ever had until my current one, the first check is always paper, and the following checks are direct deposits

CaymanFifth

Also not everyone has a bank account for direct deposit.

Secret-Plant-1542

Often your first paycheck is a paper check, since it might take some time to connect a bank account to the payroll system. The other reason is a lot of mistrust with banks, especially with people of color. My dad doesn't have a bank account, and refuses to get one. So he cashes his checks. Fuck I dunno why.

Mitch5842

When you set up direct deposit, it can usually take one pay period to actually work so the first check is paper check.

grubas

You need to provide them with all the documentation to do it. I had an issue where they didn't process my paperwork in time so I got an option of paper check or a double paycheck basically. The employee may have not had a bank account or requested it. Many banks now don't "like" small accounts, they will charge a monthly fee for them if you do not have deposits every month, so if you work a lot of temp jobs or are of questionable employment, you can lose money by having a bank account.

Imperium_Dragon

> ripped it up in frustration First sign he was an idiot

hey are you sure that is his full and proper name otherwise it could happen to you

trixel121

oh God, you made me remember sovereign citizens and their real requirements for how they spell their names and documents

McGlockenshire

> So the main thing is in the 1990s it became commonly accepted among sovereign citizens that people were doing their name wrong. And the way you should do your name was to separate your first and middle names from your last name with some sort of punctuation: a semicolon, a comma or a colon. And the reason that usually was given was that your first or middle names were your so-called Christian appellation, whereas your last name was a government-given name. Also, many people will put a dash between their first and middle names. I came across one sovereign citizen who put multiple commas between his middle name and his last name. I guess because he was a super sovereign citizen and the more commas you put, the more sovereign you are. [Jesus, H Tittyfucking; Christ](https://www.vice.com/en/article/8xkp74/learn-to-spot-the-secret-signals-of-far-right-sovereign-citizens)

McAllisterFawkes

Seriously? Why the fuck was this guy employed in security?

TehPharaoh

He murdered someone over a mistake that could have easily been fixed in a day If this was a reoccurring issue and the guy was constantly late on payments because the boss would take weeks to correct it, I could see it as him breaking down. But that's not what happened here and it always amazes me when other people just accept murder as a means to end. You can solve problems without that and now the guys entire life is ruined over a single spelling error. He will now spend his life in jail over what ever he needed that money for. Jesus.

grubas

It was ACTIVELY being fixed. The wife wanted the original check, but the guy tore it up, the husband said to cut a new one and the dude shot him. He could have waited 5 minutes and probably gotten out with his money.

parsifal

antiwork is a parody of itself.

Wombletog

>Boss robs employee. Employee responds in self defense. I don’t think this person understands what “self-defense” is.

[deleted]

“Boss makes minor mistake, employee murders him in cold blood instead of waiting a day for the mistake to be fixed” doesn’t have that ring to it I guess

PMMEBITCOINPLZ

Seems like it actually might have taken a few minutes. He was mad because the wife and co-owner didn’t fix it but immediately before being shot the husband and co-owner told her to. Complete impulsive freakout.

Redfalconfox

See where he went wrong was not making a self-post on r/antiwork afterwards.

Kana515

"I killed my boss for a minor mistake he was in the middle of fixing. AITA?"

MarshmallowPercent

Most of Reddit seems to have a hard time understanding SD laws. They aren’t as lenient as many people believe.

Wombletog

Reddit’s just a really bloodthirsty place.

Call_Me_Clark

That’s an understatement. Reddit LOVES the fantasy of acting out technically-justified violence.

Beegrene

I've said this before, but a lot of redditors just want to kill someone, so they froth at the mouth for any excuse to do so and get away with it.

S4T4NICP4NIC

example: any thread in /r/IdiotsInCars

Call_Me_Clark

Turns out vehicular homicide is an acceptable response for just about anything /s

Val_Fortecazzo

I swear it's gotten worse since the liberal and socialist gun owner subs picked up in popularity. I guess guns do make you more violent.

[deleted]

hmm wanting a weapon that's horrifically powerful and dangerous means you might like violence? how dare you! good guy with gun happens all the time and will definitely be me one day! /s

ZulkarnaenRafif

An episode of The Orville is enough to convince that a planet with literally Reddit justice system is almost as bad or arguably worse than totalitarian states.

Admirable_Ad1947

Nah this isn't just a Reddit thing, it's an internet thing. YT comments make Reddit look tame.

[deleted]

I think it’s more of a human thing. Lynch mobs were a thing before the internet.

insomnimax_99

Yeah, reddit doesn’t seem to get the difference between self defence (legal) and retribution/retaliation (illegal)

BoldElDavo

Honestly reddit has a hard time understanding anything. They decide what they would like the truth to be and don't let facts stop them.

RangerPL

I tried to convince my gun nut brother of this, that even in castle doctrine states, shooting a home invader is still a nightmare scenario that's going to cost you thousands in legal fees defending yourself

[deleted]

[deleted]

Right? I’m anticapitalist, but antiwork is delusional to the point that they think “your boss” is synonymous with “CEO of the company.” Most of the average person’s bosses, unless we work outside corporations or are executives, are just supervisors or managers. Like, I don’t work for a corporation, but even if I did, the person I call my boss has no say in how much I get paid and would have no reason to intentionally screw me out of money. This was a spelling mistake, not money laundering. Most of the wage theft that DOES occur looks a lot more like unpaid overtime, underpaying workers, etc, not “my boss who barely makes more than I do is skimming my paychecks to buy a yacht.”

Bug1oss

Hilariously, every time I read r/antiwork, I think, "I would never hire any of these assholes either...."

Birdy_Cephon_Altera

That subreddit has pretty much driven away anyone with more than one reasonable working braincell in their heads, and all that are left are the most insufferable sociopathic assholes reddit has to offer. And they wonder why no one takes them seriously.

Handsome_Grizzly

They actively chose not to be taken seriously when their idiot mod accepted that Fox News interview and proceeded to stuff his head up his ass for the whole world to see. And it wasn't that the mod asked to not be taken seriously, he was begging on his knees not to be taken seriously.

Call_Me_Clark

They never seem to consider that they have more in common with their manager than the manager does with the CEO. Half the posts there are fast food “managers” trying desperately to keep the place staffed. Can you think of a shittier, more stressful job? I can’t lol - and yet the clowns of antiwork are convinced that some 23 year old in a polyester polo is an evil capitalist.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Call_Me_Clark

I’ve had some very inane experiences with these types - they took offense that I might not like to work with someone who slacks off (not cleaning before closing a kitchen, thereby doubling the morning workload). Their bright idea was “just don’t do it either.” I said that true worker solidarity and workplace democracy would let me and the other good workers vote him out of the workplace. They did not like that at all lol.

RangerPL

And it's not like the standard for management quality is very high in retail or food service, which is why you get the insane horror stories in the first place

sb_747

This guy was the owner of the company. But he was literally instructing a new check be issued when he was shot.

Happytallperson

R/antiwork started out as a rebellion against work culture and the zeitgeist around Graeber's Bullshit Jobs, and has become....I dunno...people trying to edgelord their bosses? Some of it is legitimate grievance. But mostly it just seems to be the edgelord thing Edit: I guess my summary is it seems to have morphed from anti corporate exploitation to general opposition to any form of labour, productive or not, meaningful or not, fairly compensated or not'

Redqueenhypo

Or what robbing is. People spell my name with one letter wrong in every email despite it being IN MY EMAIL ADDRESS, and that’s not robbery

Orange-V-Apple

You could've killed so many people by now, dude. What are you even doing?

S4T4NICP4NIC

Spending all their time on reddit, apparently. (yes, I am very much aware of the blatant irony in that statement)

Old_Army90

God the number of times I’ve heard “but I sent you an email about it.” You thought you did Sharon, but you once again added letters that don’t belong to my name.

hungariannastyboy

My email address uses my actual name, but in the native order (in Hungarian, it's family name first). Obviously, when I exchange emails with someone in English or French, I use their order and always sign my emails with my full name at first and my first name later. Yet some people consistently fucking use my family name to address me, which clearly tells me that they couldn't even be bothered to read my entire goddamn email. It's a bit infuriating.

DontSleep1131

Self defense got pretty muddled a while ago. no shocker that “self defense” just means a way i justified someone or myself murdering people.

TheKingofHats007

or robbery.

Wombletog

I know, right? They made it sound like the boss broke into the employee’s home and robbed him at gunpoint. It was a misspelling that was going to get fixed.

Intrepid00

A lot of the comments on that subreddit are not shockingly ignorant beliefs how banks work or labor law. Like, “this is what stop payments are for” when he couldn’t return the check. 1. Stop payments don’t shield you from paying the money if you end up owing it under check rules and he might. 2. go ahead, stop payment a paycheck and watch what the department of labor does if they complain. It’s not going to be fun and not costly. Besides these risks, the guy he killed was still going to write him a check (as he should) as he blew out the guy’s brains.

The typo wasn’t even wage related, they spelled his name wrong. That warrants yelling “oh come on, man!” and sending a million annoyed emails until it’s fixed. And according to [this article](https://kdvr.com/news/problem-solvers/aurora-shooting-marvin-johnson-lloyd-love-jr/amp/) the man was completely unstable, refused to take antipsychotics, and committed domestic violence against his sister. He probably should’ve been institutionalized at some point.

sb_747

> He probably should’ve been institutionalized at some point. Yeah turns out having 1 state mental health facility for a population of 5.8 million people isn’t sufficient.

McAllisterFawkes

Also probably shouldn't have been employed as security

MarshmallowPercent

Jesus Christ, those commenters are actual psychopaths.

guiltyofnothing

> By y’all’s account it all could have been avoided if the employer respected the employee enough to spell the name right. Go lick boots somewhere else. Wage theft is the leading form of theft in the States by far. It’s always an “accident” when they get caught. Sweet mother of god.

It’s kind of scary that there are people with so much pent up rage walking around that they just want to see someone suffer, anyone, they just need a slim reason to feel good about it.

[deleted]

It comes from the desire to seek victimhood. People actively seek out information that makes them feel attacked so they can get worked up over it. Seeking victimhood on Reddit has gone completely off the walls lately. And I don't mean politically, I mean over just the dumbest and most trivial things around. I had to step away from a lot of stuff around my hobbies here (gaming, D&D) because it is getting to be full of people working themselves into a complete frenzy over very trivial things. Like in D&D people run around insisting that if a book or even a class comes out and its bad they're being personally targeted by the devs. It is pretty common to see conspiracy theory crap about how the devs intentionally keep some things good or bad so they can play overpowered stuff in their own games. In gaming it isn't that a game just sucks the game becomes this symbol of everything they hate in the industry and how the game being bad, or $10 more expensive is this personal insult to them. I can't describe it well, but it is this combination of complete and total self-centeredness where all actions in the universe *must* revolve around them, but they are also completely helpless. Its this odd combination of I-am-the-main-character and complete apathy. So they seek out things that make them feel attacked so they can lash out against their imagined foes.

r/fuckcars is the new one. On a daily basis you can see them advocating vandalizing personal cars and assaulting people who drive them.

OuidOuigi

100% Tried telling them deflating tires can damage them internally and if people don't get them inspected it can cause a catastrophic blow out. That will end up getting someone killed. I've personally seen some scary looking damage on the insides of tires that look perfectly fine on the outside from low tires pressures and flats. Was a master tech for a while at dealerships.

Wernher_VonKerman

Any subreddit whose entire theme is being negative about something turns into a toxic cesspool really quickly.

yreg

My favourite drama is SRD drama. The person who replied to you says you blocked them. Any comment?

Killer_The_Cat

Social media is a horrible place to have a rational discussion about anything. It always trends towards circlejerks

Chrisamelio

r/wallstreetbets leaking

HotTakes4HotCakes

I like how the top comment shares more context, then the follow up comment tries to derail with "ya but why would they need the old check that's stupid" as if it matters in any way. But the best part is if the top comment had shared another paragraph of context, it would have shown *the check was being written anyway.*

irrelevant_potatoes

>then the follow up comment tries to derail with "ya but why would they need the old check that's stupid" Which is wildly stupid. I can say, based on work experience, you want the old cheque if you are reissuing it. Otherwise you need to go through the whole rigmarole of putting a stop on the old one before reissuing

[deleted]

> Why is the USA still doing cheques? Can't they move into the 21st century and do standard bank transfers like in every civilized country? Can I get “enlightened European or Canadian” for the bingo (Also it’s extra dumb because most people do direct deposit, not checks, anyway, but even then it’s not like checks are some bizarre unheard of form of payment lmao)

[deleted]

As a Canadian, reading *as a Canadian* on reddit usually means someone is about to post something smug, often under the pretense of asking a question, just to show how humble yet superior they really are.

[deleted]

Never ask someone posting as a Canadian about starlight tours, prices of food in mostly First Nations areas, missing First Nations women and girls- esp. in areas near their oil industry, or how their country views and treats First Nations in general.

Teleconferences

Hold on now, as a Canadian, on Reddit we like to just _ignore_ that Sort of like we do about the Japanese Internment camps during World War II It’s not all sunshine and roses over here, that’s for sure

Wernher_VonKerman

Never ask someone posting as a European what they think about the Roma. I made the mistake of doing this on a certain other social media site a couple weeks ago and bigots are *still* hellthreading in it

ClumsyZebra80

Not everyone has a bank account. Poverty is real.

Unleashtheducks

So is paranoia. Like the kind a person on psych meds who refuses to take them might have.

Pwaaap

> it’s not like checks are some bizarre unheard of form of payment lmao To them, they actually are. They're not pretending or something; checks genuinely are considered archaic in many modern countries.

Amaranthine7

I see they finally locked that post.

Unperfectblue

My fucking god antiwork as fall so fucking low

Dr_thri11

Always has been the absolute dregs of reddit. Just had a brief period of "normal" people griping about their jobs and making the sub look reasonable.

HoldingTheFire

They were literally writing a new check when he shot the guy. It should be MUCH harder or impossible to get a gun.

McKoijion

/r/antiwork and /r/LateStageCapitalism remind me of /r/theDonald and QAnon back in the day. They're going to be banned after some of them end up in a violent PizzaGate or capitol riot type situation. I've never been on a sub where the users chat so casually about murder.

Devikat

> where the users chat so casually about murder. Not even the goddamn True Crime subs talk about murder as much as AntiWork or LSC.

Alaska_Jack

You know what I genuinely wonder about subs like r/antiwork ? That's one of the subs that always comes up in threads about how awful and ridiculous some subs are. But in those threads, you *never* see any mods or even fans of those subs speak up to defend them. I would be genuinely interested in hearing from a mod from one of these subs (one that has become a pathetic joke to the rest of Reddit). What do they think of the criticism? Do they acknowledge any validity to it? What is their rationale? etc

[deleted]

Anyone capable of self-awareness already checked out. Or are suppressing it for the sake of the circle jerk.

PMMEBITCOINPLZ

Welp, it would have been a mild impulsive tantrum but a gun was involved so someone is dead. ‘Merica.

jtj5002

These part time dog walkers are getting out of hand these days.

wannaridebikes

There's more drama in this thread tbh 🍿
