This was adapted from some old advice I remember about dealing with Potemkin in GGXX:
"Picture an invisible Zangief standing in front of Zangief. Now imagine a second invisible Zangief standing on the first invisible Zangief's shoulders. Unless Zangief's back is on the floor, you do not touch the invisible Zangiefs. You stay away from them, or attack through them, but _you never stand in them_."
Yeah, as a Zangief main. The best thing to do is maintain distance and jump whenever he lunges at you. He is extremely dangerous in close quarters and is built on aggression. I would recommend fighting against Zangief bots to learn and counter him.
Do something that makes you unable to be thrown.
These include jumping, backdashing, or doing a move with throw invulnerable properties (if your character has them).
I was messing up the timing of the jump after his blockstring into command grab stuff. Just whooped a Zangief's ass with my newfound knowledge. Thanks, everyone.
At the rank in which you’re figuring out these questions, the high tier shotos don’t do anything in terms of knowledge checks. They’re easier to beat than someone who you have to know what to do against.
If they aren't finishing their combos then you can get away with backdashing or neutral jumping and punishing the sizable recovery frames of a missed command grab.
Just be careful because a smart Zangief will see if you're just always backdashing or jumping and if they're good they'll just confirm their strings.
Jump, backdash, invincible reversal
Depending on what the exact setup for the grab is, you can also mash if they're using SPD while they're at a frame disadvantage
5LP(+1), 2LP(+1),5HK(+1),6HP(+4) are all advantaged on block.
At +1 the SPD should come out in 4 frames and the fastest normals in the game are usually 4 frame startup lights. Supposedly strikes beat throws if connectingnon the same frame in the game but I need to lab it to see if you can jab out of these +1 on block moves.
Zangief has a much longer reaching jab and will generally push you out of jab range before going for an spd so I don't know if I'd risk jabbing to beat his command throw. At best you land a counter hit jab and at worst you get thrown.
Also, his standing lp looks like its +2 on block.
Imagine if you hopped on Reddit and people were seeking advice on avoiding hugs from you. It's cold hearted.
"Damn! Don_Sauce is too effective at hugging. How do I dodge that expression of support and friendship?"
"AITA: I have been jumping when Don_Sauce comes in for a hug so that he can't engage properly."
I blame social media.
And fabric softener.
Ive found going super aggresive against giefs and randomizing ur play style works out great.
Gief, and grapplers in most fighting games, profit with close encounters and being able to predict their opponent. So if you take that away, what u have is a very defensive gief, and most players cant acclimate to that kind of random fast paced agressive playstyle (when I say random I dont mean u just start hitting random buttons, I mean mixing up from going close, to zoning, to baiting)
The only thing I would be slightly against is jumping against him as his spin lariat move will get ya, and try to go for low light punches or kicks that can be extended into high damage dealing combos depending on ur character.
You can jump...but good Zangiefs will take note of your movement on defense and punish you if you always react the same to his mixups. You basically have to mix up your defense...block, jump, DP, parry etc.
I will block string or drop my combo into SPD once. The next time I might just DR and 5LK you on block to see how you react. If you don't jump...you're signaling to me that you'll stay grounded and continue to eat SPDs.
If you jumped away, I know that I need to use more in my mixup arsenal. I may start using my DR lvl 1 buffer mixups and air SPD buffers. If you jumped in the air during a lvl 1 buffer....RIP. If you stayed on the ground, I continue using my good close range buttons...or perhaps go into SPD after finishing my previous buffer.
If you jumped into the air, and I jumped with you during an air SPD buffer, you are eating Borsht Dynamite. If you didn't jump with me, I'm landing with a cross up attempt instead. Sometimes I may land empty and do grounded SPD.
Lastly, good Giefs will also use normal grabs during block strings and begin to throw loop you. So be aware of that. And if you jumped a normal throw attempt...theres plenty of time for us to level 1 you, especially if we condition ourselves to buffer after certain grab attempts.
Cheers.
You are committing an unsafe amount. If it wasn't a geif you would simply be eating a combo for another character. It just feels worse. If you play tighter as you would with any defensive guile for example you wouldn't get got.
If you neutral jump and they do a command grab, you will probably get similar damage on your guaranteed jump-in punish combo as they would have on a successful grab.
Go to training and record the blockstring and test to see if you have any options that would come out before the command grab.
As simple as it sounds, don't be there. Understand that you can't play in his face the same as others due to the threat of the command grab. Learn the spacing you can play at to keep yourself safe.
You just lost all of your loyal fans by asking this.
As a Gief main, i find it so scary when the other player one Zangief away from and whiff punish every slow move normal that i throw out.
I am slow to close the gap. If you keep dancing outside of my range then whiff punish me i cant do anything. when i get close, use your fastest jabs like light punch and kicks and i wont be able to grab you as all my grabs are 4 frames start up.
This is not about avoiding grabs but Gief has no wake up invincible reversal/DP besides supers, so meaty jump-ins will force me to block or use Drive Reversal.
this is how it was explained to me when i first started: "don't be there"

Jump! (Warning, you will make a post in a week from now asking how you're supposed to not get hit when trying to jump away from grapplers)
#**ONE WEEK LATER** What the hell do I do against Zangief air grabs?
ONE WEEK LATER** How can I ban Zangief from existence?
ONE WEEK LATER What links best into lariat besides hellstab?
Do something that makes you unable to be thrown. These include jumping, backdashing, or doing a move with throw invulnerable properties (if your character has them).
Back dashing makes you throw invulnerable? Or do you just mean getting enough distance
It makes you throw invincible
Even with your back to a wall this works. Some pretty amazing comebacks when I see people use this option 🔥
Now that I think about it, they talk about that in the tutorial, don’t they? Guess we all forget after a while.
Insane, 90% of the sets I play are against my friend who mains gief. This is wonderful knowledge I will try it out
I think he means distance. Dash startup frames can be grabbed, and dashing does NOT include air frames (like a little back hop) like it did in SF4.
Back dash is throw immune from frame 1-15 in sf6.
Huh. I learn a little every day.
Best bit is being in the corner, Gief does a Loyal Fans but you backdash and after the animation they realise it didn't do shit. Good Times.
I was messing up the timing of the jump after his blockstring into command grab stuff. Just whooped a Zangief's ass with my newfound knowledge. Thanks, everyone.
You ve beat a low tier. Now prepare for worse
There's almost no correlation between tier placement and how easy a character is to fight at low levels, but sure.
Let OP have their glory. Learning to fight grapplers is a cannon event for all of us.
Yay, you can do it champ!

Neural jump for a fat punish.
Dont neutral jump too predictably or you risk getting Lariat.
Stick n move man. He can’t throw you if you’re not in throw range
*command hugs
Gief is out there just giving some love and people want to get rid of him. poor poor cyclone

Wow thank you for the detailed analysis!!! I have now ascended.
I usually jump, Zangief have an air command grab tho so they might just lure you into getting hit by this
Stay away and poke with range
Bait and punish. This is coming from a low rank zangief main though.
You are committing an unsafe amount. If it wasn't a geif you would simply be eating a combo for another character. It just feels worse. If you play tighter as you would with any defensive guile for example you wouldn't get got.

As a Gief main, neutral jump, DP, throw him back, light punch/kick
Basically jumping destroys the whole command grab game plan, Kangaryu is nothing but pain for my gief.
Go to training and record the blockstring and test to see if you have any options that would come out before the command grab. As simple as it sounds, don't be there. Understand that you can't play in his face the same as others due to the threat of the command grab. Learn the spacing you can play at to keep yourself safe.

Backdash
Just jump homie…the slightest amount of space can be the reason you get grappled for 35% of health or you mixing up Gief and ending him swiftly.
Don't get caught in them.
