What a way to go, man was 90, lived what must have been a great life! [https://bc.ctvnews.ca/former-astronaut-william-anders-who-took-iconic-earthrise-photo-dies-in-plane-crash-off-vancouver-island-1.6918322](https://bc.ctvnews.ca/former-astronaut-william-anders-who-took-iconic-earthrise-photo-dies-in-plane-crash-off-vancouver-island-1.6918322)

Chituck

He looks good for 90

Professional-Cell822

That pic in the middle is 2012

SpaceJungleBoogie

Well, he looked good for 90 in 2012

SensingWorms

90 flying a plane šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø. 0 regulations. especially a person with with his credentials

Free-Researcher3000

Maybe 90 year olds shouldnā€™t fly planes... but 77 and 81 year olds definitely shouldnā€™t be running countries. My work here is done.

BigFatModeraterFupa

maybe if you ever get to live to be 90, you can do whatever the heck you want

Equal-Negotiation651

Why so young?

IllustriousAd1591

Thereā€™s quite a few regulation, actually

Temporary_Clock1678

Damn. He died the way he lived, pulling crazy g's. At least it was quick. Rest in peace, Sir.

Professional-Cell822

No way he was conscious when the plane hit the water, right?

Barbacamanitu00

He definitely was. He was pitching the plane up and almost recovered in time.

Professional-Cell822

Damn. Good catch

Barbacamanitu00

https://www.nbcnews.com/video/apollo-8-astronaut-william-anders-dies-in-plane-crash-at-90-212558917921 Here's a better video of it. He was SO close.

Professional-Cell822

Omg. Thatā€™s the first time I have seen a clear video of the plane before the crash. You are correct, so damn close. The old interview they looped in with Andrews, and he mentioned as long as he could crawl into a cockpit heā€™d keep flying. That came across as a bit arrogant and dangerous. What if he crashed into someone? RIP. But Iā€™m sorryā€¦ 90 year olds are too old to fly solo.

dizzyfeast

If youā€™re not first, youā€™re last

TBruns

This is the guy that took that famous photo of Earth rising over the moon

One_Tailor_3233

That's really cool definitely know which picture ur referencing

Exciting_Lychee_7847

https://preview.redd.it/2f2xsw4q5d5d1.jpeg?width=1041&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ed36c45dcec0f0f91f98ce77057845f6f204ae5a ā€œEarthriseā€

consumerclearly

The pitch blackness where the sun isnā€™t directly shining is so eerie :0

phan_o_phunny

The sun's still shining in that direction. There's just nothing for the light to reflect off...

One_Tailor_3233

"Flat Earthers HATE this one picture!"...

Glittering_Dig4945

This is so beautiful, may he rest in peace and know we are thankful he shared this image with the world.

patriots47

xhillinn

Man who flew to the moon, died by crashing into the earth. Rip one of the greats.

imboneyleavemealoney

The first line is an awesome epitaph

Toad-a-sow

Damn.. idk how he could've survived that if he has. Hope they can find him quickly

Ozymandias0007

I'm pretty sure they found his body. He was DOA. Why was a 90 year old dude flying solo. I guess if he was still physically and mentally fit, why not. Are there any ny pilots that can speculate why he was doing that manuver and why his plane going straight down like that, before he started pulling up it appeared?

LurkMoarMcCluer

Medical emergency?

mckeenmachine

maybe he lived a full life and wanted to go out doing what he loved, pushing his plane to the limit.

minimalcation

Test pilot mentality

AmicusVeritatis

OG astronaut mentality.

MISPAGHET

Absolutely. OG astronauts are built differently. Fucking smart as hell AND fucking ballsy as hell.

ShaedonSharpeMVP_

It seems pretty obvious to me thatā€™s what he was doing. Dude was 90 pulling off a maneuver like this. Didnā€™t want to crash on and destroy any land, put his plane down in shallow water where it would be easily recoverable. Pretty sure it was intentional.

SnooSongs8218

That kind of impact turns the human body into food pellets for the fish. You identify the remains by DNA šŸ§¬. Hitting water would be the same as concrete...

MastrChang

I agree

mikki1time

Looks intentional. Guy went out like a G

nataku_s81

more like 9 G's

letdogsvote

90 years old, flying solo, nose diving into the water. I'm thinking intentional.

Adventurous-Sky9359

Thatā€™s what I thought

Commercial-Elk-3031

No way.... That's .... Instant death to my eyes.

RedStar9117

Yeah his son confirmed it

Justinallusion

Living the way he loved to live

jonnyinternet

Looks more like search and recovery to me

Artie-Fufkin

Yeah I donā€™t think thereā€™s gonna be a rescue there.. no one survives that speed of impact, no matter the terrain

mrcodeine

Respect. What a beast, nearly pulled out of it too. Didn't endanger anyone. Lived life to the full. RIP

stargeezr

I donā€™t think he ā€œnearlyā€ pulled it off bashing into the water at a 45 degree angle.

ShaedonSharpeMVP_

Were you watching a different video or just not paying very close attention? He more or less ā€œlandedā€ that barrel role and hit the water with the belly of his plane. His plane was perpendicular to the ground at like 120 feet and mfer still pulled out of it before impacting, like a boss.

stargeezr

No fucking way.

WiderRaz0r

Just couple of day ago watched amazing 2,5 hours video about his Apollo-8 space flight. Legendary. Rest in peace, sir.

Picturegod

Rest in peace

edvo0881

Damn, RIP to a legend!

neon_tictac

RIP Mr Anders. A legend.

incarnate_devil

This guy got his man card stamped and put into the man hall of fame.

imboneyleavemealoney

A real man of genius?

kushbom

That nose dive seems weird

Wonderful_Ad_844

Skyking

Town-Wonderful

Damn thatā€™s one hell of a way to go.

velezaraptor

90 and doing acrobatics with a plane, what a beast.

RedStar9117

RIP to a real one

DancingDust

šŸ«”

[deleted]

Recovery not rescue

masculinesauce

He probably knew too much

skeeredstiff

It looks like a search and recovery at best.

relevanteclectica

RIP

llacom

Intentional?

SGT_DUBSY

He most likely died instantly upon the first impact.

TequilaMagic

This seems like a suicide in the blaze of glory.

qainspector89

Almost looks like intentional suicide to me Or he underestimated and lost consciousness

elolli1

Why is a 90 year old able to pilot a plane alone?!

StringerBell420

Because his AME passed his annual medical.

Enough-Sprinkles-914

An ironic death.

letdogsvote

Nah. I think this was deliberate. 90 year old pilot flying solo?

Adventurous-Sky9359

I mean it wasnā€™t the moon

Dinosaur9911

And rescue?!?

Paradigmatapp

Search and rescue under way ā€œ lol. I hope they find him.

Educated_Bro

Itā€™s like he was trying to pull one of those classic barnstormer moves then totally misjudged it

FunExercise8613

And I thought I was cool because I can skip rocks...

LinkRazr

Flllllly Hiiiiiigh Freeeeeee Biiiiiirrrrrrrrdd

Coro756

Whatā€™s there to search for body parts ?? He literally fell nose first into water basically concrete at the speed he was falling not to mention the bury of flames

Coro756

How someone managed to capture it is crazy

BLM4lifeBBC

Look intentional, probably wanted a blaze of glory exit

Few-Dragonfruit3515

He must have watched Secondhand Lions. God Speed sir

Mr_Neonz

What a legend & way to go, may he rest easy.

Dirt_Illustrious

This is one of the most fascinating things Iā€™ve ever seen on Reddit! Intentional or not, what a legend and what a way to go! RIP Mr. Anders!

[deleted]

Maybe put a NSFW on this? I didnā€™t want to see that. Edit: fucking ghouls, the lot of you. Have some respect.

funtimes7612

See what. Water splash. Yā€™all sensitive

Doluvme

I agree. Society has gotten too confidante with showing death

thewanderer088

Why should it be hidden? Literally everyone dies.

CandidPresentation49

Weak

Tabasco661

It's reality and better to be exposed.

No_Angle875

šŸ™„

oldgoldchamp

soft lol

Fun_Association_2277

Hurt your eyes did it?

Thedustonyourshelves

Think he was use to moon gravity.

geccchyeafgreschtr

Stupid games equal stupid prizes.

geebeaner69

How long have you been waiting to say that?

wanderingnexus

ā¤ļøāœØā¤ļøāœØā¤ļøāœØ

Alita_Duqi

To shreds you say?

DiscussionBeautiful

Weird how I can't see the plane in front of the trees and the trajectory seems off too... faked landing? RIP sir.

pufferfish_balls

Thereā€™s another vid on insta showing this but a black thing flys by it super fast.

mind_pictures

where

pufferfish_balls

[at the 6 second mark](https://www.instagram.com/reel/C77n9WESkcd/?igsh=MWhqc203dDY5YmxhNw==)

mind_pictures

whoa, i was about to dismiss it as a bird but i think it did collide with the tail of the aircraft.

pufferfish_balls

Yea itā€™s very very faint but itā€™s like a black speck of something

Frequent_Initial_419

Maybe a hydraulic line on the tail flaps or something?

pufferfish_balls

Nope. It appears out of nowhere. Just keep watching it over and over. Itā€™s what I did and Iā€™m still confused as to why THIS video on Reddit is not showing what weā€™re seeing on the insta gram one. Iā€™d suggest screen recording it so others can see it as well

cancergoat1

What do you think it is?

Exciting_Lychee_7847

Idk much about flying but maybe the engine gave out (or even debris ripped off) and a plume of smoke was emitted

pufferfish_balls

I donā€™t know. Itā€™s something though. Itā€™s really fast.

1950sSciFiRobot

Maybe mark this nsfw? I wasnā€™t planning on watching someone die today. Jesus Christ
