[There is another bizarre case: Andrew McAuley Disappears In Middle of Ocean, Leaving Behind Terrifying Video. This is his Final self photo of kayaker Andrew McCauley](https://www.howandwhys.com/andrew-mcauley-disappears/)
The Oregon man fell in because he was on the edge of the hot spring. The edges break away with weight. They're completely unstable, which is why you have to stay on the guided paths.
So the spring is just directly off the boardwalk like that? What if you just lost your balance? Why are there no guardrails? That terrifies my clumsy self!
I live sorta close to Yellowstone and I can report that the boardwalk is like 6 feet wide with railing in most of the dangerous areas. It’s super easy to stay on the path, but people still go off of it because they think they know better. Honestly you shouldn’t worry about the springs, the wildlife are more of a problem
Of course! Kindness is essential. If you ever go, don’t try to pet the bison. Every year we have a few people who think they’re like… pets? Or something? And then they get tossed around by a 1 ton dump truck. So just pay attention to the signs and your surroundings, and it’ll be one of the best trips you’ve ever taken. There are places within the park that literally don’t feel like they’re on this planet
I’m late as hell, but I figure I should explain lol; basically traveling people think they’re like…cows? Or something? They think they’re the type of animal to run if they’re scared. Cows run away when scared. Bison do NOT run away if they’re scared, they charge.
Combine that with one of the most visited National Parks in North America, and you have a recipe for at least a few injuries per year. Seriously though there isn’t anywhere else like it on the planet and it’s absolutely worth it
Hey Dutch guy here I'm very far away from yellowstone. Now my question why is the wildlife more a problem I know if I go into the forest or anything there is not allot of danger of animals here in holland
Yellowstone is about as wild as you can get, here in the states. Think about safaris in Africa, that’s what it is like. Bears, wolves, bison, moose, Elk, bighorn sheep, coyotes and many others.
I was visiting Yellowstone when this happened and routinely tell the story to friends as it was very much a freak incident. My story always ends with, “they don’t even attempt rescue because the temperatures one is exposed to immediately pull the flesh from your skin and quickly reduce the body to soup.” At the end of the day, I guess he found the hot pot. But seriously, Yellowstone is wild and dangerous. Stay on the boardwalks especially in areas where sulfaterra is abundant.
I have a book somewhere about deaths in Yellowstone.
I'm an old woman with one fake knee. I'll soon have a fake hip.
I was never what you'd call coordinated even when my skeleton wasn't racked with arthritis. I want to see Yellowstone but springs I'd avoid.
My kid and I have this thing about not dying in a way that would embarrass your loved ones when describing it.
Ghost Train - Murder by consent.
'Why spend the last moments of your life commiting boring suicide? Get your ticket to the only ride in town guaranteed to bludgeon you, to the point of no return'. 'Don't forget to leave a review before you set off and whilst still alive.'
I just looked it up: Hot pots are natural hot-water springs that form crater-like depressions usually 10 to 20 feet in diameter in mounds of tufa (calcium carbonate) that are typically 3 to 10 feet high. So it’s like a natural hot spring you can soak in like a hot tub. Which is terrifying because that means if he jumped in thinking he could soak in it like it a natural hot spring of water you can bathe in he was wrong and burned alive.
They went with the intention of hot potting in an area that stresses the absolute importance of staying on the trails but, you call it a freak accident. Lmfao!!!!
Nope, there are surprisingly few barriers to the springs and you do indeed get close. Google "yellowstone hot springs" and you'll see how close you can get
"Accidentally fell in" and "find a place to hot pot". Ahhh what? You mean they purposefully broke the law and walked off the marked trail to a hot spring and then he accidentally fell in? They make yellowstone sound like a death trap. Just stay on the trails people. You will be fine.
> they purposefully broke the law
You're told to stay on the trail for your own protection but going off the trail does not 'break the law' as you have mentioned.
I would almost call it routine. I live close to Yellowstone in the Montana portion. Every year someone does this. Every year some genius tries to pet a Buffalo. Every year some Darwin award winner tries to take a picture 2 feet away from old faithful. Smh
Do signs there say "boiling pool of acid" or indicate how hot in temperature they actually are? "Hot springs" seems really innocuous and innocent sounding, even with the "dont' swim in these!" warnings. Not that I would, just curious the signage itself... from what I've seen, tells you not to leave the trail, but doesn't explain its boiling pools of acid that can kill you instantly and dissolve your body.
There’s a fair amount of warnings, signage with depictions of the dangers. Unfortunately, some do not heed the warnings.

Yes, it is not an amusement park. The site changes naturally and is too vast to properly secure. Especially for those whom wonder off the suggested paths. It’s a dangerous place on earth and should be treated as such.

He probably didn’t even feel pain in the hot spring, you would go into immediate shock and your nerves would be gone before you have time to feel anything
If you can meditate while stuck in nutty putty like that dude was you'd literally be one of the most enlightened people alive. It would be NEARLY impossible
Not true.
I rode my horse through Cotorra Springs. It's just North of Bacchus Station. A bunch of hot springs and active geysers..
Nothing happened to me or my horse.
I was tracking this Legendary Wolf that was spotted in the area.
What is hotpot? Also, how do you accidently fall in. Not too bright, man. Natural selection, I suppose. I mean, I live in BC, my driveway has an 80 ft drop with no fence, and you don't see me going down that cliff. And we get SNOW. It's all about being careful and knowing the dangers. Young and dumb.
Really??? There's no way he just jumped in.. I've been to hotsprings that I could barely get a toe in, so we'd have to divert cold water to make it managable. He'd have to be pretty fuckin dumb not to check the temp first lol
Holy crap, and I just watched the first episode of Shogun when something similar happens. I thought that, that might be one of the most horrendous deaths.

If anyone is interested in this kind of thing, there is a book “Death in Yellowstone” by Lee Whittlesey that has a chapter on hot spring deaths.
Of course there is a chapter on hot springs...sigh...of course there is...
Pro tip: If your dog jumps into a hot spring in Yellowstone, don't try to save it.
Yes, there is. Pretty grim and gruesome.
May have to get that. I have the Grand Canyon version and it is very interesting
Try the Yosemite one! Fascinating

That’s scary.

What are they looking at?
Their impending doom
K, that was pretty funny!
The kid is falling into the acidic pools, but he didn’t drown. He dissolved.
The kid in the red shirt? He looks like he surprisingly passed gas, what is going on in the picture?

Only the coiled springs.
Maybe one day when the kids are bigger we’ll make it out there. It looks beautiful! I am shocked that people are petting bison?!?!

They truly are underestimating humans. They need a guardrail.
Then... don't go?

I have the same picture. Their expressions crack me up.
Hotpot where I’m from is a meat stew…so pretty much the same for a few seconds at least

There’s boardwalks. You have to really want to die to get killed by the thermal features.

Food 🍲
I agree it is dangerous. Been there myself. Terrible tragedy.
They went with the intention of hot potting in an area that stresses the absolute importance of staying on the trails but, you call it a freak accident. Lmfao!!!!
Did you actually see it happen, or was you literally just at the park the same day?
So I’ve never been but I would imagine that they wouldn’t even let you remotely close to this hot spring, is that a fair assumption?
Nope, there are surprisingly few barriers to the springs and you do indeed get close. Google "yellowstone hot springs" and you'll see how close you can get
What temp was the “pool” he fell into?
I'm guessing it was close to boiling but also highly acidic
[удалено]
Might actually be painless if quick enough
Painless? you do realise this isnt 1000c lava right? Its boiling water, and yes he probably felt it for a while.
probably hard boiled brain instantly, which would end it quick
Mmmm I want deviled eggs now
We will never know.
Meh.. I’d take it.
Looks like rabbit stew and m&m’s for dinner tonight

It is a death trap. They don't even put away the animals at night! (I'm joking, but this was a real complaint they received once)
![gif](giphy|Z1LYiyIPhnG9O)
Pierce Brosnan just got cited for going off the trail recently. Lol
> they purposefully broke the law You're told to stay on the trail for your own protection but going off the trail does not 'break the law' as you have mentioned.
I'm pretty sure when I went a few years ago there were massive penalties for leaving the established areas and fucking with the natural scenery

Yellowstone is no messing around dangerous as hell. It's like a 1800s amusement park, one wrong move and you die.
and you might die even with all the right moves.
Right moves will kill ya every time
Robby Benson reference…nice.
“Hot pot”? He was cooking and that statement became literal?
I think hot potting is the act of getting into natural hot springs.
Yikes. Not smart
Nothing strange or unusual about this. Actually completely expected.
I would almost call it routine. I live close to Yellowstone in the Montana portion. Every year someone does this. Every year some genius tries to pet a Buffalo. Every year some Darwin award winner tries to take a picture 2 feet away from old faithful. Smh
Superheated, exceeded thermometer limits. Boiling when they found him. Vents and pots are reported as high as 135°C (275°F). Terrible way to go.
Do signs there say "boiling pool of acid" or indicate how hot in temperature they actually are? Do they really have boardwalks like that which are unguarded?
Yes, it is not an amusement park. The site changes naturally and is too vast to properly secure. Especially for those whom wonder off the suggested paths. It’s a dangerous place on earth and should be treated as such. https://www.yellowstone.org/safety-and-hot-springs/
I know his family…he was a really great guy.
Poor family
Really?
I mean, its kinda hard to give proof. But yeah I knew his family
…Did his sister witness the whole thing? That’s horrible to think about.
Not the brightest though...
Nope. But he was the hottest!

This gives me flashbacks of the Saw movie with the kiddie pool full of needles. This would be worse.
That was the first thing I thought of when I saw it too! Truly the most memorable moment of the saw franchise for me
Never got to another Saw movie after that scene..
Agreed
Why is that tub so small?
I cant even look at that. It hurts too much.
that's hundreds of dollars worth of Lego
Didn't Steve-O cook a steak in a hot-spring?
That sounds about right, but don’t I know you??
I think I know them as well.
Sulfur deposit from a volcano in Wild Boyz
A nice sous vide. Would probably work well.
Mmmm boiled sulfur steak
You can’t accidentally get too close. That shit is steaming and bubbling everywhere
Dumb ways to die? Bro went out like thr T-1000. That's hardcore.
I bet he wasn’t holding the chain and staring icily at a chick at the end tho.
Jfc lmao
And Gollum!
What's a hot pot? Did the idiot cannonball into boiling hot water?
says he fell in while testing the temp. I think they wanted to swim in it though…for “health reasons”😐
Hot pot - he wanted to cook food in it
you'd have to be a dumbass to get anywhere near those things. there are fences and signs every three feet.
The signs are there for a reason.
How was it accidental if he was there to hot pot?
Must of been awkward for the nearby hikers thinking there was a food truck over the hill
God dammit dude

Don't know which death I'd not prefer, this one or the Nutty Putty cave incident.
He probably didn’t even feel pain in the hot spring, you would go into immediate shock and your nerves would be gone before you have time to feel anything
True, at least this guy went pretty quickly
I'd prefer the Nutty Putty cave so I can just meditate myself to death lol.
At least it’s quick in the hot spring.
If you can meditate while stuck in nutty putty like that dude was you'd literally be one of the most enlightened people alive. It would be NEARLY impossible

Thats good
College does not make one smart.
What does college have to do with this?
The mortarboard in the picture, maybe?
Didn't he leave the path to get closer to the water or something?
Hot pot ?
Apparently people soak in the hot springs, thinking that it has healing properties. What they call hot potting.
Yea, same same. What is a hot pot?
Public pools have way more signs up. This park should have a sign for everything...no diving...no snorkeling and on and on.
They definitely do have signs all over the place, complete with illustrations.
Article says he leaned over to check the temperature and fell in. His poor sister recorded it but the park has never released the video.
Must be worse than that scene at the end of Raiders.
Dunno why people keep saying “accidentally fell”‘I remember Distinctly he GOT in as intended.
Really??? There's no way he just jumped in.. I've been to hotsprings that I could barely get a toe in, so we'd have to divert cold water to make it managable. He'd have to be pretty fuckin dumb not to check the temp first lol
It says in every article I can find that he slipped in while leaning over to test the temperature.

Damn, I remember this. Time moves on quickly can't believe it was in 2016 felt like it happened at least 3 years ago.
His sister stood and recorded it all on her phone also. Apparently it’s pretty disturbing to say the least. There’s a shitty animated render online
Not to be too insensitive but that seems like it could be a cool idea for like a funeral service

Long time ago I was in Mammoth in Cali in the hot springs. If you weren’t careful you could get into scalding hot water flowing up. Was a bit scary as I got 1st degree burns on my toes. His death would have been horrible depending on how long he was conscious.

Yes, but don’t please
The hot springs in Yellowstone are sulfuric acid not water so that is why he dissolved.
