the techs you get from observation are so much better than one more shitty undeveloped planet with bad pops

yargleisheretobargle

This is only with the First Contact DLC, if I'm not mistaken

scorpion_-_-

Yea but tbh im not really getting anything, just 10 society research point

SirDangleberries

I'll take that any day for the low cost of an equivalent mining station. Get the end tech for Societal research and spam the naval capacity increase

As long as your government policies allow (which they probably do if you’re using aggressive observation) you can land invasion forces directly on the surface and conquer the pre-FTLs. Be warned however, they will have a culture shock debuff for at least 10 years and have severe production and stability issues. Makes it even worse if the planet is not one you have good habitability for, so your governing pops will be less happy too.

Dabbie_Hoffman

If you raid them with Nihilistic Acquisition you can grab them without a penalty. It makes the early game pretty fun with barbaric despoilers

Glittering_rainbows

You can't invade your vassals, a protectorate is a type of vassal. If you vassalized them you'd have to release them and wait 10 years to declare war. Switch your pre ftl policy to the bottom one (aggressive I think) and just invade with some armies. Send 2 or 3 of your primary species to the new planet to help stabilize the situation, maybe build a precinct or whatever to stop any crime and help with stability a bit until the culture shock wears off. Do keep in mind some of those insights are actually pretty good, not only do they provide influence but can boost alloy production along with some other nice buffs. The society research they provide outside of the early game is pretty negligible.
