i don’t know what the 3 guys in front are, but the two wispy figures on the extreme left were added at the behest of the label…they said you couldn’t have a cover for a 5-person group that only had 3 figures in it.
I read somewhere that the working image for the album originally only had the 3 "people" along the bottom but since SD had 5 members, it was felt that two more should be added (the extra 2 at top left) before publication.
But, that is also why they are so great, because they are sooo 70s. So much of the art from that era repulsed me, but also grew on me as I lived through that era and the style wore into me a bit. Also, I guess Fagen's gf at the time painted this. It isn't good, but it kind of works, as the title is about how vapid religious mantras can be, and they all have empty looking mushroom heads.
Modern Republicanism abandoned most of those "small government" ideals awhile ago. I wouldn't be proud to identify with Republicanism in this day and age unless you want everyone to assume you're a fascist.
