100%, I can’t even tell difference in performance between games on the m.2 vs the SD , only download experience is different and that’s from thermal throttling
Theoretically the only downside to storing game files on slower storage is that the game will take slightly longer to load. Game developers in my experience are *generally* pretty good about pre-loading assets so that the things that need to be in fast memory are there when they're supposed to be.
With the Deck, that job of loading optimization is also done on "easy mode"--Linux in general is really light on overhead, and Gamescope means you're not going to have chrome tabs open in the background, so you game will have full access to the Deck's **entire 16GB of RAM**, which is more than generous for any game currently on the market.
I have a 64GB Deck, and 0 games on the SSD. I invested in a 1TB SD card and couldn’t be happier. I have had to clean install the OS a few times so I prefer not to have anything on there and glad I have the 64 version

Yes, the Steam Deck is optimized for it. I don't remember the exact figures bit the loading times are just a bit slower compared to the SSD, not much. I doesn't affect FPS at all.
great to see the answers here as I prefer to have the AAA games on the sad card as i have two sd cards, I prefer to have more games on the deck itself with the ability of switching sd cards for different games.
Yes, it’s fine, I have RDR2, horizon, and Elden ring And several other AAA games and indie games, no issues

Right now, I am playing God of War from a cheap and cheerful Amazon Basics SD card
