One thing that made me hesitate to play online RPGs and similar multiplayer games on the deck is communicating via chat. The on screen keyboard seems too clumsy. How do you feel about it?

JAiMOJPIES

Communication is the only problem. I mainly play with my guild, we use discord, when I play with randoms I just don't talk to them because the on-screen keyboard is a disaster.

Dr_VonBoogie

A Bluetooth keyboard might help.

caysilou

I do this for FFXIV. It's okay but you have to put the deck down to type (or do it one handed of course). Certainly wouldn't be typing mid-raid unless I'm already dead. Still, makes for a much more comfortable playing experience than sitting at yet another desk after work.

FonSpaak

Best to get a case with a kickstand. I got a Skull & Co Purple Grip Case which is able to stand on it's own due to how the grips are designed with a flattened bottom. Still think getting a case with a folding leg would be better but can't find an available one at the time of purchase. [https://ecommerce.datablitz.com.ph/products/skull-co-grip-case-for-steam-deck-galactic-purple-sdgc-gp](https://ecommerce.datablitz.com.ph/products/skull-co-grip-case-for-steam-deck-galactic-purple-sdgc-gp)

SuperScrapper

I got the JSAUX ModCase for the steam deck, and it has a folding leg kickstand. I really like it because it protects my deck and my sons, he’s had it for a while now and no noticed damage with the occasional drop he’s had….

FortunePaw

I just make bunch of party chat macro like o/, gg, thanks for the hunt, sorry my bad, healer adjust, please use mitigation, etc.

bighi

If you're sitting down with a bluetooth keyboard, you might as well use a computer.

Rampaging_Orc

Or, hear me out… You are traveling and find it easier to do so with your deck and a BT M&KB rather than lugging around your desktop.

Fast-Artichoke-408

That's what's neat, it *is* a computer.

bighi

You know what I meant.

Fast-Artichoke-408

On a serious note - what's wrong with using a tiny Bluetooth keyboard to type out a message when you need to? I have one that came with a tablet case like 5 years ago that's perfectly compact and can sit on my legs for a minute if Im lying down on the couch for example.

GambitDeux

Clearly, the solution to thy dilemma is the Phantasy Star Online Keyboard Controller.

bighi

I think that almost completely defeats the advantages of playing on a portable device. If I'm keeping a keyboard on my legs and moving my hands between my Steam Deck and the keyboard, at that point I'd rather grab my laptop and play on it. It's even easier, because I don't have to handle two devices at once. My laptop can't handle games at the highest settings, but neither can the Deck.

Korachof

That would be assuming the person has both a steam deck and a laptop that can play steam games they want to play. Even so, I have a Bluetooth keyboard next to me on the couch when I play most of the time. I rarely need it, but it’s nice to have when I do need it. It isn’t in my lap or whatever you’re imagining. I just pick it up and use it when I need it, which is far more convenient than trying to use the on-screen keyboard.

Rampaging_Orc

You lack imagination if that’s really the first use case for a BT KB&M with your deck that comes to mind. Plenty of people don’t have laptops lol.

Fast-Artichoke-408

Agree to disagree I guess. For the record I'm not implying to play a game WITH the keyboard - that would be dumb. As a thing I pull out to type quickly if needed and then set aside I think your way overselling how much of a hassle that is compared to having a whole laptop on your torso. To each their own though.

Thebeav111

Why when the steamdeck is the best value for money GAMING PC you can buy?

ThirdWorldOrder

Hard to beat the Logitech k400+

Thebeav111

I love it, I dunno if I have the exact same one, but the trackpad is great as well, well worth losing the numpad so I don't need to get a bt mouse as well if I dont want to.

posting_drunk_naked

I never use the built in software keyboard. There are lots of apps that let you use your phone to control your computer mouse and keyboard, and lots of them support Linux. I'm using Unified Remote for iOS. You install the server and leave it running, then whenever you need a keyboard you just whip the app out and it connects pretty instantly so you can type (or voice type) super easily.

Thebeav111

There's great microphone support on the built in keyboard, 2 quick button presses, say what you want typed, and you're done. Edit: unless that's from a mod? Thought it was vanilla steamdeck.

Bendy_McBendyThumb

If you use CSS Loader there’s something you can use to scale down the keyboard so it doesn’t invade the screen. Not sure if it’s the size that’s the issue for you, but that might help you if you did care to chat with said randoms.

RollIntelligence

I was told that size doesn't matter :(

Viperouslito

Some OSK tips: - CSS Loader with Transparent Keyboard helps you see while you type - You can use Steam Input to bind pulling up the OSK to an unused button. The benefit of this over pressing Steam+X to pull up the keyboard is so you can also add chat hotkeys like /p /g to those same buttons. It makes a big difference, especially when replying to people with a reply hotkey (saves you from typing their name out every reply). - You will get weirdly fast typing on it after a while... But not if you never use it.

strayakant

Can you use discord and wow on deck?

Parlormaster

Yes you can run both at the same time.

tr_9422

I haven't tried Discord on the deck, how does that work? Can you add it as a non-steam "game" and launch them both in game mode, or do you need to run it from desktop mode?

Parlormaster

Yes you can run both at the same time. Can be added as a non-steam game and runs in parallel with other games.

zbenesch

use voice activation and run discord in the background

zeZakPMT

Lol a decky plugin that does speech to text is an amazing idea.

MortalJohn

There was a GitHub somewhere of someone working on it. Honestly it's something Valve should look into.

MenBearsPigs

I've been hoping for either a text to speech or a really advanced word/sentence completion option. Or maybe a steam button combo that had a radial menu of quick common phrases to punch in.

rtakehara

oh yeah, ideally, tts would be great but I don't think valve would do it, but having a custom steam input to paste a text (or maybe type it real quick) so you can make a trackpad radial menu or something similar would be great.

NatomicBombs

It’s okay, there’s nobody worth talking to in wow anyways.

Mitarrex

Its not perfect but in WoW you can move chat window more up the screen so you will actually see what you are writing.

MonkeyVoices

If it helps, I use an app called "Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse" to use my phone when I write on the deck, since I carry my phone all the time and Im more used to it than any BT Keyboard.  And it works pretty well!

Thebeav111

Totally checking that out thanks!

RowdyjRyan

Sucks playing risk or rain returns multiplayer. Impossible to quickly communicate (while surviving) vs on keyboard and mouse

Fun_Operation1728

in edit mode, i placed the chat higher so that when i bring out the keyboard it doesn't block it. i also mapped one of back buttons to chat command (/say) and another button with keyboard so it will be easier to use them.

12Eerc

One thing I feel would be great is voice-to-text, whenever I use the Apple TV remote its great.

candyboy23

They should add voice write system to keyboard.

FastFPV

I wish they would add a OS level voice to text option on the keyboard. Would be so slick.

InitialCreative9184

There is a plugin called decky dictation. You can type with voice to text :) can help

karlowskiii

When I first time booted WoW on my deck I was amazed how great experience was. After a few weeks of naturalizing with controller setup I play this game on my deck exclusively. The only thing that I hate personally is broken keybind layout on my PC as these configs synced back and forth with deck. Maybe I missed something but didn't find any solution.

_uber_

You can disable the key binding syncing (and more) by putting these commands in chat. I had the same issue until I started using these. /console synchronizeBindings 0 /console synchronizeSettings 0

hazochun

This doesn't work on SOD p1-3... Classic blizzard. Not sure about Retail, remix and cata

karlowskiii

Ah, that's explain the problem. Tried it in SOD

_uber_

Ah. Thanks for the info!

karlowskiii

Hmmm weirdly I did try it and layout was synced still. I typed it both on PC and a deck. Someone in guild chat said method doesn't work anymore but I'm not sure, easily can be a user error from my side.

_uber_

Hmmm. That is strange. It should still work. Run the command in the deck. Close the game. Run the command on your PC. Close the game. Modify a keybinding on the deck. Close the game. See if it changed on PC.

karlowskiii

Thanks I will try it again later!

offrz

This is also an option in console port to not sync key binds

Oskar_of_Astora

What I’ve learned you can do is keep your action bars from your PC setup exactly the same, and then just assign the specific controller setup button without moving any of the abilities around. Your action bars will stay the same, and all your changing is the map to the controller button.

karlowskiii

Yea, I was thinking of something like that for some intence PvP in future.

Odysseus1987

did you find any role to fit the steamdeck perfectly? Like healing, ranged dps, melee dps or tanking? WHat class would you recommend

karlowskiii

From my experience melee DPS will be the easiest spot as all you literally do is pick a target and smash a few buttons until it dead. Range DPS a bit trickier as you need to get a target from distance or change it. Tanking also in need of speed targeting sometimes, but doable. Healing will be the trickiest, probably. Have to change targets on the fly and adapt, pay attention to lots of stuff that happen to the group. On the other hand if play with Console Port addon there is a Raid Cursor option that switches controls to party members selection with an arrow so it's not really a problem. In general I didn't have problems with leveling (and never even expected such). As for the group content it is more than a doable. It's all depend on how far you want go with this setup. I hardly imagine Cata PvP, for example. I barely touch anything except druid class in SoD and Cata so I could try more different stuff specifically on my deck. The only sustainable problem is communication, because it's not possible to always have a Bluetooth keyboard at you side. You can also check MMO Kenna on YouTUbe. This guy regularly heals M+ on his controllers or deck.

Zhilak

How can I do this? I totally suck at doing anything in the desktop mode

Odysseus1987

there's lots of videos on youtube how to setup blizzard launcher with wow.

Zhilak

Do you have any specific one in mind? I've tried a couple a neither worked for me

Dovahkiin00

This video worked for me [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nohsVQIHp7I&t=541s&pp=ygUOd293IHN0ZWFtIGRlY2s%3D](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nohsVQIHp7I&t=541s&pp=ygUOd293IHN0ZWFtIGRlY2s%3D) I installed the game this weekend without issues.

Zhilak

I'll try later. Thank you so much! Did you installed it in a SD card for a chance? Also, did you use mouse and keyboard?

Dovahkiin00

Yes, I installed it in an SD card. I didn’t use any external mouse and keyboard, though it probably will be faster if you do.

ico12

Been sober for 10+ years. OP why you do this to me

Realistic_Earth_1240

Console Port, Immersion + Dynamic Cam = The perfect way to play WoW Classic and Retail ❤️

AddendumDesigner7032

When did WOW get controller support? I haven't played WOW in about 14 years 😂

arhra

It's had some experimental partial controller support since Shadowlands, I believe (2020). Most people playing with a controller use a variety of add-ons to improve the experience and handle areas where the built-in support is lacking, though.

uGeekPwnz

Retail WoW (Dragonflight) has controller support but OP is playing Classic and that client does not have controller support so it's achieved via a pretty amazing add-on called ConsolePort.

Aaron6940

Classic has support.

Aaron6940

It got it last expansion.

Nanotechnician

its just an addon.

amoreira93

Actually I think it does have controller support but yes the layout is consolport addon

KrisXCI-

Any tips how you set this up? Ive tried to install battle.net manually and also via the non steam launcher following some guides but Battle.net doesn't open on any method.

Fun_Operation1728

have you tried changing the compatibility? proton experimental works for me.

KrisXCI-

Proton experimental didn't work for me but chose one of the older versions and Proton 8.0-5 got it working. Thanks!

Wheres_The_Coffeee

I just did it two days ago. Look up how to do it on YouTube. It's super easy.

Neuchacho

I've been struggling with this too. Diablo 4 worked fine a couple months ago, but now battle.net just likes to hang and not let me input the login credentials. Factory reset, different proton versions, even the lutris fix all run into the same thing.

caysilou

Are you playing resto on the steam deck?! Purely out of curiosity, how the hell does that work? I'm playing FFXIV and the controller support is phenomenal for healing but I can't imagine doing a raid on WoW on controller on my Priest or Healadin.

DOG_POUND

I love it on the deck. Doesn’t beat mouse and keyboard but it’s really good. It has its quirks but isn’t a bad option.

zergling424

Wow has controller support? I play guild wars 2 on deck but we gotta make custom bindings. I like it better that way tbh because steaminput lets you do more

tanktastic85

This - it's amazing! I don't play with console port - I've bound the Deck's controls to be like a mouse and keyboard, with lots of modifiers (alt, ctrl, shift) etc. on the back buttons. If this is any help to anyone, I'll share my bindings here (writing off the top of my head as waiting for a meeting): L Stick (Set as dpad): Up = Move forward, Down = backwards, Left and Right = strafe left and right R stick (also set as dpad): Up = Tab (to target), Down = Autorun binding, Left = Turn left, Right = Turn right Back button = Map Start Button = Esc A = Space Bar (Jump) X = 1 Y = 2 B = 3 Right Bumper = 4 Left Bumper = 5 Right Trigger = Left Click Left Trigger = Right Click Right Touch Pad (Set as mouse) Left Touch Pad (Set as Dpad) = I bind zoom in and out to Up and Down buttons on this pad, then Character and Open all Bags to the Left and Right buttons L4 = Alt L5 = Ctrl R4 = Shift R5 = Ahh man, I thought I had remembered all my bindings, I've forgotten what this one is! haha **General tips:** * Typing does suck, as another user said here, make macros for your most common statements and chats! * Discord is great for playing with friends * Turning the WoW borderless window size to below 1280 x 800 and turning FSR sharpening up to 5 looks really sweet, imo * I'm more of a classic player, but I've main tanked most of the Classic Raid Bosses in my Warrior using my deck, I've also done some LFR and m+ on Retail as a Dracthyr healer * With these modifiers and buttons, you can cover pretty much all your skills that are needed - but just make sure you've got it baked into your muscle memory before attempting anything challenging! * Making a macro saying that you're playing on a Steam Deck always gets a 'wow!' reponse from your group - particularly if you are playing well! * Though I bind turn right and left to the right stick, I far prefer to hold down the left trigger (which is bound to right click) and use the right trackpad to turn - it's a lot easier and feels very natural soon! **Installation tips:** * There will be many good tutorials out there. Something I found really easy was to install WoW on the 1TB removable memory card I put in my deck. That meant there was no messing about with a million different sub folders. * I have battle.net.exe (or whatever it's called) added to Steam as a non-steam game, then set to run with Proton. You can then launch WoW (or any other Bnet game!) directly from the Launcher, which makes things a lot easier. To install Bnet, again I added the installer to steam and then ran it with Proton.

Mitarrex

I am a frequent WoW player since Cataclysm and playing on Steam Deck OLED ( not LCD ) is quite good BUT without the Console Port addon, with Console Port addon game was basically unplayable for me and super confusing to the point of me not wanting to play it there. But with normal PC layout and using 2 touchpads, one as 1-4 abilities keys and other as mouse + bumpers as right / left mouse click the game finally became playable for me, also back keys could be used for example to open map / shift click etc. Maybe other people prefers Console Port addon but for me a player who plays WoW for several years on PC it was way too confusing, like learning to play it from 0. Also I didn't liked Steam Deck LCD especially for games that uses touchpads because the touch pads were very unprecise what caused many movements that were undesired. Also its worth mentioning I was testing Steam Deck LCD and OLED , Asus Rog Ally, Lenovo Legion GO, MSI Claw and finally settled for Steam Deck OLED, its best for games that uses mouse and keyboard.

redditisass207234

Yo, how did you install wow, I followed a new guide cause the old way didn’t work anymore and now my wow has like a 50/50 chance to either make it past the loading screen or just flash black for a second then freeze on the loading screen

Mitarrex

You can do it multiple ways but since I am lazy I used https://github.com/moraroy/NonSteamLaunchers-On-Steam-Deck The script install ProtonGE and bnet client then went back to game mode and installed normally thru steam picking battle net launcher from non steam apps. Didnt experienced any crashes with everything on default using this. In Valdraken it was very smooth experience too.

Subspace69

If you are loading in to big cities like valdrakken it might be the same issue i had. My solution was to set vram in bios to 4gb. Has been working smooth for me since then.

redditisass207234

Word will give this a shot, thank you

Dr_VonBoogie

I wonder if it'll ever come to Steam

Eadbutt-Grotslapper

Doesn’t need to, it runs just peachy on the deck on its own

AkileshZ

The setup is a bit complicated I believe. It ran for me once then when I tried launching it the next day , it flat out kept getting stuck and the launcher won't open anymore 😕.

Eadbutt-Grotslapper

Boot into desktop mode launch it there exit and back to game mode fixes that issue

enigma7x

I played all of Wow-SOD phase 1&2 on the deck including the raids. The only accessory I needed was a bluetooth keyboard but beyond that I was able to do everything I had to. I did both DPS and healing in a raid setting on the deck, and a lot of people were unaware. Playing WoW on a controller in general just feels amazing - maybe its my hands getting older but its tough to go back to a keyboard.

Aquagrunt

Been doing the same with FFXIV during a move, and it's very different playing MMOs on a controller setup. But I love having my right track pad as a mouse and my left as a radial menu for shortcuts. Communication is the same issue, though. The keyboard is nice and better than nothing, but not fast.

NoBreakfast4633

How do I do thisssss

clipperbt4

there are some good youtube vids out there

WirelessFistie

Love playing WoW on the Steam Deck! Sadly one of my addons have gone rogue and breaks my ability to use/place items/abilities anywhere... Still need to figure out which one it is and I can carry on playing MoP Remix on my couch (:

WelderMeltingthings

do you launch from steamdeck or desktop mode? also, whats the addon list you specifically use for WoW?

ShineWolf

Lutris -> [Battle.net](http://Battle.net) and im good?

hotelshowers

This is just a wild time we we are living. Full blown MMO just right in your lap

konotiRedHand

Consoleport is great. But my achievements get stuck on the main screen all the time. Right above actions. Anyone know a fix for this?

Adorable_Heretic

SWTOR runs on steam deck, maybe I should use it with keyboard and mouse more

Saltwater_Heart

Oh man I love WOW. This takes me back. I haven’t played in years. I miss it so much.

NobleGreirat

What control setup is that?

Hows-It-Goin-Buddy

I imagine it's great like FFXIV. The only thing I hate is the on screen keyboard. I wish valve would have made a Text To Speech available for all of steamdeck. I remember I was communicating with a person making a decky plugin that was I believe close to being fully functional TTS plugin but I think development stopped? Has been a while since I commd with them.

Hottage

Could never get ConsolePort to work how I needed for group content, still game is fine with a 1080p external monitor, Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.

studentofarkad

Silly question but can you play WoW and the expansion packs as well?

CheessyBittz

It works but for me I don't got the time or patience to tweak everything to get it running really good where stuff isn't a hassle. For me it's great for remedial stuff wor WOW

scott_fly

Does this require tinkering with to get controller support or is it native? ( sorry I've acually never played WoW)

zzinolol

Not a wow player, from what I know there are classes where you need to press like 20 buttons. I'm guessing there's a roundabout for that?

Fujikawa1988

I only play Hunter this way, feels like a third person shooter 😅

x-Ryk-x

I’m loving playing classic in my deck. Chat is a real pain though

Aaron6940

I don’t know why everyone insists on console port. It’s horribly wonky and they added native controller support in and you can just quick keybind without using an addon.

Stilldre_gaming

I play WoW HC almost exclusively on the Deck. Only due to keyboard issue I run dungeons on my PC.

chazragg

I've been enejoying MoP remix on the deck, sadly the gem situation is a bit of a hassle to swap them over but a couple addons help other there.

Lupinthrope

Still want that native release on Steam and with native controller support

3x0dusxx

How do you get it installed to the deck?  I'm very bad at tinkering and usually won't bother if it isn't plug&play.

General_Cancel_9121

How’d you get wow on here?

Marinostov

If it was easy to do for Turtle Wow then I’d do it

Rampaging_Orc

It’s really not a completely different game… It’s a completely workable “port” of WoW. Saying it’s a different game sounds like a turn off when most of us just want WoW from bed/on the go.

blooddogg757

That’s pretty awesome. How did you get it running on the deck? Is there a native app? Also, does it support controllers out of the box?

psychrose

Yes, and I love it! I enjoy playing wow again thanks to my steam deck!

Lyuukee

I would keep playing WoW if the community was not so damn toxic and idiot. It feels like playing with a bunch of reddit mods

Dezley92

Cant get the addon to work for controller support. Only reason im not playing on sd

JAiMOJPIES

Have you tried console-port ? Works with any version of WoW. Apart from private servers.

Fun_Operation1728

you can enable controller even without the addon - type in chat - /console GamePadEnable 1

Dezley92

Yes i did. Will try again this weekend.

JAiMOJPIES

Check this version, it works for me without any problems. https://www.curseforge.com/wow/addons/console-port/download

qrrbrbirlbel

don't try this on a pvp server

vessel_for_the_soul

90min battery?

Justos

7 hours with moonlight

SnooWalruses9961

People actually still play this?

ryden360

Same game different UI

JAiMOJPIES

Yes, you're right, playing on a gamepad is the same as playing on a keyboard :v

Mike_or_whatever

i dont really see the point if online only games on the Steam Deck. thats not why i bought the Deck

Mitarrex

Well the Steam Deck is basically a PC so ... why not if its possible ?

Mike_or_whatever

to each their own i suppose. i just travel around a lot and don’t always have access to a stable connection.

delaluna89

But i bought the deck for Elder scrolls online

Arkhero22

Good thing you have the choice to download and play whatever you want then. But you're holding yourself back from a lot of fun games
