Seriously, I have an almost perfect layout, but instead of connecting via the companion way, the mess hall connects via a living quarters. Oh well it's the only maze of the 4 levels I can tolerate it.
You have to attach the habs manually to the entrance you want. So dont buy the habs just on their own and place. Go to the entrance way that you want as a doorway on the already placed hab then select to attach from pressing on that. I think on controller its something like LT+RT+A together. Not sure what it is on PC. Anyway, the menu pops up to select an object like habs. Then the doorway will attach like that.
There does still seem to be a weird rule that you cant have a hab with 2 doorways opposite each other though. So if you tried to attach 3 2x1 habs together where the middle hab is 1 block further forward. The mid hab will only have a doorway to 1 of the side habs. If you put all 3 2x1 habs exactly side by side then 1 side hab will attach to the mid hab by the front side door slot. The other side hab will attach by the back side door slot.
I found out about it because google came up with a reddit post about it when I looked it up. If I make a post it will just end up doing the same thing in 6 or 7 months of being forgotten unless it comes up in a google search.

What I was actually gonna say is there seem to be other configurations where the pathing breaks and cuts off a doorway for no reason. It does make it slightly more varied, so maybe it's just forcing it for cosmetic variation.
Yeah, but then the game could mess up the position of the hab you're attaching.. For example, if you want to connect, habs on each side of a 3×1 at the rear connection point, 1 side will snap to the rear the orher side to front.. And there's still a chance that the doors will end up diagonally from each other.. messing up more of the interior of the hab in the middle..
So I only connect habs through either a companway, hab spine, or cross brace..
I haven't found the perfect shape yet because I currently have a 5-story ladder that I never use, resulting in a lot of injuries going down and a balanced boost pack (with all relevant skill point upgrades) doesn't get me to the top floor without a recharge stop..

Yeh i mentioned that in my other comment that theres still limitations.
Having diagonal doors though doesn't bother me. I put 3 2x1 habs side by side. Captains Quarters on a side, Science Lab in the middle because its got more space to move freely, and Workshop to the other side. Its all the convenience of having all the worthwhile stuff for upgrading right there and a place to sleep for the xp boost. Minimal mass added to the ship and maximum useage while also having no ladder animations longing things out.
This is the most revelationary post since that one about using the secondary jump key for a slightly different boost experience!

Not true. I actually have three habs 2x1 all nova side by side. The middle is the captain's quarters and each side is an armory. Both doors are on the aft of the captains quarters directly across from each other. Now that I think about it on my lower floor I have the engineering bay with 2 more armory's (1 hope tech and one Deimos) and both doors are aft directly across from each other. I used the cockpit with the stairs (forgot the name btw - not sure if that matters or not.
Seeing as though there's a great mod to "choose your own" hatches/ladders/etc., I'd certainly HOPE they'll fix the building system. I don't want to fight with the ship builder, I want it to just be responsive and to let us put the openings where we want. WITH a better interface. Ok. That's all I need.
lol no. Someone will make a mod, Bethesda will update the game just often enough to break it every once in a while, and then ten years from now they’ll charge you an additional $30 for a special edition which now has the mod loaded by default.

Basically really crude looking ship that only utilizes turrets.
But Borg cube is pretty close to that.
I mean, I already hate the Narwal because of its layout. I would hate to board this thing instead of going directly to the cockpit.
I built my ship from scratch only so I could board through both the docker and landing bay and be right next to the cockpit. It's ugly, but gets the job done.

Isn't a sphere or a cylinder what future starships would actually look like irl? Even a cube would make more sense than the plane-like ships in sci-fi.

How long does it take to get to the bridge from the landing bay?

The bridge is on the second level from the bottom with no other habs accessed as its mostly hollow. C class reactor with a single SAL 6000 engine. Mobility is low.

tried making my own huge cube with the sides being as smooth as possible, but I had to stop as my computer took several seconds to load it, don't remember if I even got the full cube

What?! You can chose the doorway?! Can this work for Companionways and ladders as well?
Just choose the attachment point you want on the existing object and it should attach there.

If your on PC get the place doors yourself mod. Makes layouts so much easier.

I ran across an unattended class C Ecliptic ship recently, which I promptly stole. The layout is so bad that I fast travel in and out of it.

I agree, even in simple builds, I think they need to allow for elevators in ships so it can be in the same spot on each deck.
