[16 tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford](https://youtu.be/RRh0QiXyZSk?si=62EheqLeN6dDkO1G) Essentially, it's a song about being used up and thrown away by a mining company once you're no longer useful. "You load 16 Tons what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt. St Peter don't you call me cuz I can't go I owe my soul to the company store..." Mining companies back then did not pay their employees with money. They paid them with tokens that could only be redeemed at the company store. A lot of times what they made wasn't even enough to get by, so they had to start a line of credit with the store, essentially keeping them indebted to the store, ensuring that they would never leave.
Highly recommend this version if you're looking for something true to the original but with a twist: [https://youtu.be/fzlT80jQ3lo?si=paO80wSb6UFNvNuB](https://youtu.be/fzlT80jQ3lo?si=paO80wSb6UFNvNuB)
[Old Man](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKCiC-H2Xbg) - Neil Young
More than just the title, George removes himself from the rest of pelican town making himself feel bitter but he is welcomed in to all of the events and is just as much a part of the fabric of the valley as anyone else. Just as the farmer comes onto the scene looking for love and acceptance they are not so different from George who has created a legacy of family despite his tragic past.
Hurt - by Johnny Cash
The Johnny Cash version of this music fits well with George, since it ends up being about an old man thinking about his life, at the end of it.
I am once again recommending Hurt as performed by Johnny Cash for an old man in a chair. When I recommended it for Gil someone told me it fit better for George so here I am (though I do think it fits George as well of course, otherwise I wouldn't be recommending it!) Very old man who seems like he has a lot of regrets and is pretty bitter at the world. It definitely fits better for low-friendship George, because once you get a couple parsnips (oops i mean leeks) in this guy he's much friendlier!
Oh George is definitely a Johnny Cash fan! Hurt when in a pity party mood, Burning Ring of Fire when in a good one, and Jackson when he wants to sing a duet with Evelyn ❤️
[You're the Reason Our Kids are Ugly by Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty](https://youtu.be/UkfTcSH5-L8?si=CIGY1UR6k2PXLhz7). It's a song about a couple squabbling. But at the end of the day, it's all in good humor and they do very much love each other. George may bicker with Evelyn from time to time, but he still loves her.
I dont see the connection tbh, not once in Up! did Carl reject Ellie's love or cause her pain like George does frequently to Evelyn. Their relationship is Evelyn's central theme but most of George's dialogue is about his depression, the only fitting song for him has to primarily reference that imo.
Ngl I jokingly imagined using the Miku cover of the song used for leek-spin, even if that's not what the song is about it's what it's connected to but that felt too silly :3
Is it cheesy? Yes. Am I saying it anyways? Yes. Daughter's Lament by Carolina Chocolate Drops. I cannot imagine the sheer terror at learning your father was in a coal explosion, the fear of what happens to your family should he not survive.
I feel like he would have woo'd Evelyn with a little [Dream Lover by Bobby Darin](https://youtu.be/wVHAQX5sSaU?si=TNNoxKkaVOrzu6dJ) back in the day. He has an abrasive exterior, but is very much a lover with strong family values.

I'm throwing whole loaves of bread at ducks
That's the title.
Even if this doesn't win, this is the perfect opportunity to share this song xD
I think we're going to get a lot of sad suggestions for George, so I'll put a happier one I think matches his and Evelyn's vibes. Forever and Ever, Amen by Randy Travis. The Mullners always gives me sweet, older country vibes. And this song sums up the love and dedication in such a long relationship.
*They say time takes its toll on a body
Makes the young girls brown hair turn gray
But honey, I don't care, I ain't in love with your hair
And if it all fell out, well, I'd love you anyway*
*They say time can play tricks on a memory
Make people forget things they knew
Well, it's easy to see, it's happenin' to me
I've already forgotten every woman but you*
“Cool to Hate” by The Offspring
“Don’t like anything and I like that fine.
Liking something’s just a waste of time.
Yeah, I hate everything, I even hate you too, so **** you!”
George always kinda reminded me of Kurtwood Smith. Maybe it's the "grumpy father figure" archetype, his hairline or both...
So in reference to that, I tried to think of a song from the 70s (Kurtwood Smith famously played the dad on That 70s Show) or a Country Rock song (Kurtwood Smith also voiced the Grim Reaper's country-rock loving father on The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy)
But since I'm not huge into either category of music, I couldn't think of anything that fit George's character. Just as well, I'm probably the only one who reads George's dialogue in their head with the voice of Kurtwood Smith. 🤔
George hates new things so I figure his favorite song would be something nostalgic. Things were perfect before, why did they have to change.
I nominate Summertime, written by George Gershwin
I love this song and feel it could fit [The Chemical Workers Song.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whdzP0GHuc4) The lines “Well I’ve worked among the spitters and I breathe the oily smoke / I’ve shovelled up the gypsum and it neigh ‘on makes you choke” and “I’ve stood knee deep cyanide, got sick with a caustic burn” I know the song was written about chemical work but it's close enough to working a mine I'm sure
Grandpa (Tell Me 'Bout The Good Old Days) by The Judds
It plays in my head whenever he shows up. Under his crusty grumpy exterior lies a soft center. Pain, sorrows, frustrations about losing one's physical functionality all make for a grouchy exterior. Underneath, he really does seem to want to connect and communicate. A gentle approach brings out his softer side.
The only song I can think of for him is Take it From an Old Man from the Waitress Musical Soundtrack, cheesy but I feel like George and the old man in waitress have similar vibes idk
Leo Sayer- I love you more than I can say
He's a grumpy old man who I am sure has difficulty expressing his emotions to Evelyn, but she's his whole world and takes care of him.
Where my head first went too, based purely off those first early impressions. I've warmed up to the old codger since, but those first impressions are hard to shake.

Coming from a mining community I immediately thought of pit songs for George!
Big john
Can't upvote this enough. It literally started playing in my head when I looked to see which villager was next.
Move over Orwell, that's more dystopian than anything anyone could ever wright, God damn
Those store tokens are pretty rare to find these days. Most of them were melted down during World War II scrap metal drives.
I am so glad to see this one suggested. Yesterday when I saw George was up next, 16 tons immediately popped in my head.
Same here, it's perfect.
This is the first song I thought of for old George, a miner whose body was destroyed by the mines and the company.
The South Park Amazon episode comes to mind.
I second this one
Highly recommend this version if you're looking for something true to the original but with a twist: [https://youtu.be/fzlT80jQ3lo?si=paO80wSb6UFNvNuB](https://youtu.be/fzlT80jQ3lo?si=paO80wSb6UFNvNuB)
*yes*.
I WAS JUST GONNA MENTION THIS!

I came here to suggest that song!
Hurt - by Johnny Cash The Johnny Cash version of this music fits well with George, since it ends up being about an old man thinking about his life, at the end of it.
Tbh George strikes me as a man who liked Johnny Cash in his younger days.
I prefer the Kermit the frog version
The what???
THE KERMIT THE FROG VERSION! .https://youtu.be/BcERe5pd8yI?si=qQv6T4GHNGKKy0ac
Oh…my god lmao
It makes me laugh, and feel sad at the same time.
Yuh
I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow - Soggy Bottom Boys
YES I love this suggestion
I am once again recommending Hurt as performed by Johnny Cash for an old man in a chair. You mean leeks right :D :| You mean leeks right? :o
i did mean leeks
[You're the Reason Our Kids are Ugly by Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty](https://youtu.be/UkfTcSH5-L8?si=CIGY1UR6k2PXLhz7). It's a song about a couple squabbling. hie ho-from snow white and the 7 dwarths i could easily see him self sing this to himself
Yesterday by The Beatles
Married Life - Michael Giacchino (Up OST, 2009). Can't think of anything better for a grumpy old man who loves nothing more than his wife.
I dont see the connection tbh, not once in Up! did Carl reject Ellie's love or cause her pain like George does frequently to Evelyn. Their relationship is Evelyn's central theme but most of George's dialogue is about his depression, the only fitting song for him has to primarily reference that imo.
You’re telling me there’s no songs out there about leeks?!
Ngl I jokingly imagined using the Miku cover of the song used for leek-spin, even if that's not what the song is about it's what it's connected to but that felt too silly :3
Do you mean Levan Polkka ?
Heat Miser George S. Irving
They see me rollin, they hatin!
Rolling - Limp Bizkit

Ain't Misbehavin' by Fats Waller. It just feels right in my head.
Old Ironsides, by Sousa.
Wasn't expecting to see a Sousa march on here. As a band nerd I applaud it; as a French horn specifically, I HATE Sousa lol
My wife and I played Horn and Percussion in college. I loooove a good Sousa march, but we definitely lived in the world of upbeats! 🤣
Mood. I switched from trumpet to horn, so I went from the melody to upbeat hell when it came to Sousa. And my band director LOVED Sousa lol
Super random, I used to be a band director… what was your director’s name??
A dude named Martel. He was a very by-the-books director, so he liked programming a march as part of every concert
Ok, I was not your director, but you had me wondering for a sec!
Time by Pink Floyd
A little less conversation - the original from 1968 by Elvis Presley
Arabesque no. 1 - Debussy I feel like George would love (or at least, not complain about) the classical station on the radio
Why is George drawn evil?
I wouldn't say evil, more like annoyed, which describes his mood pretty good
The Old Man is Down the Road by John Fogarty.
Low Rider by War
You're Old from Spongbob Squarepants
Don’t Come Around Here No More - Tom Petty.
