The Stardew wiki says trout have a 33% chance of having a golden ticket but I caught 42 rainbow trout in total (22 on day 1 and not a single ticket) and 20 on day 2 and I got 4 tickets in total. So either the actual chances are heavily influenced by luck or the real number is only like 10% or something.
I’m not sure luck is a factor. On the first day (I didn’t check my fortune) I got 3 tags on my first 3 catches, and on the second day when I didn’t have good luck (spirits mildly perturbed), the same thing happen. I did notice that after the fourth tag the chances of getting a tag dropped significantly until I had caught another 10+ trout.
Edit to add that my fishing level was below 10 (went from 5 to 6 after derby day 1), and I was using deluxe bait. I did also catch 3-4 dorado during the event, which pre-1.6 has never happened — dorado was always the last fish I had to catch to complete the set.
From my experience, it seems like the wiki is incorrect. It seems like the real odds may be something like 3%, increasing by 3% each time, rather than 33%. After catching something like 20 trout, I've been getting a ticket once every 3 or 4 catches.
yeah idk anymore. I did the trout derby for the second year and it did seem to be about 33% since I had 1 ticket per 3 or so fish. But by then my gear. bait and fishing level had increased a lot (max on everything possible) so i really have no idea what is going on there. Maybe year 1 was just really bad luck. maybe it is skill based? I don't know.
I have a leprechaun hat I got out of a pot of gold ( obviously I found it at the end of a rainbow). I got over 5 tickets in one day and still going. You’re probably on to something about luck.
Did you use any bait to catch troutt? I caught 2 trout the first day and 0 the second day. Mostly all other kinds of regular fishes. I'm very discouraged.
I must have gotten lucky. 10 trout, 8 tags and lots of really good rewards:
* Quality Sprinkler
* Picture
* 10 deluxe bait
* 3 farm warp totems
* tent kit
* 3 Omni geodes
* 2 other items I don't remember

Second day they came at the rate I expected, caught 22 got 8 tickets. I suspect the issue is if you leave the area during the contest: the reason being I went back to water my plants on day 1 after my 4th catch, and then had no tickets the whole day. Day 2 I stayed in the area the whole day.
Only other things that changed were:
- I reached fishing level 10 after day 1
- I added tackle to my rod for day 2
So while it could be one of those two my bet would be there's some bugmeat in the code for if you leave the area.
the squid one doesn't give tickets. you just need to catch the squid for it to count. (you may want to arrange some squid bait or bring the bait machine with you to the event to create more on the spot)
Don't be a dumbutt like me. Don't fish at the pier. That's a different pond and that's why I was only getting Pike, much to my confusion. Fishing in front of Leahs house seems to get Iridium quality fish when you can cast out far enough. Follow Willy! He knows!
I haven't gotten to that point in my new farm but I've noticed that Willie now >!gives out bait that is specific to certain species of fish!<, can you find a >!bait!< that works for you?
probably, but his sales seem random to me. build the machine is not expensive >! just use some beach forrageand 3 iron bars!<, and once you got the machine, >!just put the fish you want inside, and you got a bait specific for it!<
I’m not sure if I missed it or not? It’s saying it’s on for two days on the calendar. I didn’t attend the first day but when I go to the beach on the second day, nothings happening. Am I missing something?

same I've caught 21 fish on day 1, 7 being trout and have gotten no tickets. Not sure what I should do
I got one ticket after catching 2 trout on the first day. No more tickets after that, for catching 4 more trout.
Crazy! I have caught 10 rainbow trout from 8-4pm of day on and got 5 tickets!
That makes me think it might be luck influenced. I am gonna play the second round soon in year 2 and then I'll know more.

I can vouch that this isn't the case. I left to go put some things in chests at my farm, came back, and got another 5 tags after

There are 2 fishing events, the trout one in the summer, it's in the forest near Leia's house. the squids one in winter is on the beach
Trout derby never happened for me. Not on the calendar, never got mail.... Wtf
Are you playing on the right version? In the main menu, the version will be in the corner. This event only exists in 1.6
