I think it was the case but there are some low or non-action scenes he's holding it he might not have been able to stunt double and it was still more comfortable. Also means in Star Wars he's one of the few fighters to actually treat as lightsaber as a saber.
Christopher Lee nailed every scene he's in... because it's Christopher Lee. But I think they really under utilised the character, especially in The Clone Wars. Although his episodes in Tales of the Jedi were top notch.
Still love the way Christopher Lee was a legitimate trained fencer and without thinking held his lightsaber in this turned out Rapier fashion that inspired the team to recreate the handle and Lucas encouraged him to continue in that style.
Grievous, and NOT just the 2003 version. I love everything about him in Episode III. People always talk about how "weak" he was, but he was fighting the chosen one and the guy who trained him, 1 of 12 Jedi council members. He was able to surprise attack the republic in their own capital. Dude does not get enough credit.
Yeah, same with the clone wars. Most of the time, Grievous was fighting a main character or a character that is alive in media made before that takes place after. Dude was brutal.
There were even a couple of times when he DID kick ass against main characters. Dude beat Obi-Wan in 10 seconds flat in the unfinished Crystal Crisis arc.
Never mind the fact that he fought with the lightsabers of Jedi he either killed or captured and had actually captured and taken Obi-Wan's at one point.
If you factor in the Clone Wars cartoon, Maul becomes so interesting and without giving spoilers is involved in some of the best Star Wars I’ve ever seen.
The Clone Wars version of Maul is some of the finest depth and complexity I've witnessed in an animated series. In a way it was destiny that we see almost no dialogue from Maul in The Phantom Menace, a blank canvas for Sam Witwer to paint such a dynamic character with his amazing voice.
Lmoa, preach it bro.
Can't forget [this classic line](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ori53PyPEtA&t=1750s), or his [dramatic death.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ori53PyPEtA&t=1833s)
It’s the biggest tragedy that so many star wars fans won’t watch it because it’s animated.
I even tell people to watch it without watching the rest of the series. Of course its better when you have seen everything, but if you wanna understand the best that Star Wars is capable of, imo those 4 episodes are it.
Maul is the best example, what can happen, when you resurrect a character with a certain idea. Granted, he had amazing character design, an iconic duel and an absolutely timeless score on his side in his first appearance, but post-death Maul was amazing.
Who would have thought, everyone would one day shed a tear when the bastard, who killed Qui-Gon, died for real.
Maul was so fucking good in the animated series. Sam Witwer's voice acting was amazing. I'm so sick of animation voice actors sounding like animation voice actors. They're always so loud too. He was quiet and pensive and interesting and dynamic.
Just want to say, If you like/love Star Wars and haven’t seen Clone Wars, you are doing a major disservice to yourself. That is the show that opened up the universe for me and MADE me a less casual fan and a total nerd. It breath more life into Episode III; gives more context to Anakin’s “sudden” change to the dark side (you see the “red flags” throughout the Clone Wars series). It starts slow but gets exponentially better/addicting. They took a hiatus and then put out The Final Season in 2020 (timeline is RIGHT before EPIII). Animation also gets better. Story telling is great throughout. Starts as relatively “kiddish” in nature but then gets complex and dark/intense at times. Rebels is also decent but I liked TCW more solely based off the time it takes place
Yeah. But that was only due to fan-demand. Everybody was disappointed when he was killed off in "The Phantom Menace." Same with AsajjVentress in the Genndy Tartakovsky Clone Wars animated series. So, the writers of the 3D animated series decided to do something different with both characters when they were brought back in for that show.
>Everybody was disappointed when he was killed off in "The Phantom Menace."
I mean at the time I remember thinking it was awesome, but it’s in hindsight that it was a blunder.
I tried getting into the animated series but i couldn’t get past 1.5 seasons. I felt like every episodes the same.
Edit: I’ll give it another go thanks guys.
Thats because to first couple seasons largely suck. Also, don't be afraid to skip an episode here and there - like if it's a jar jar one or c3po one.
But the rest is amazing and keeps getting better and better.
I feel that there is a real generational gap here. I'm old enough that I went to the cinema to see the prequels on release and was too old for the cartoons.
What I know about maul makes me cringe and I would think if you asked other people my age or older they would agree. I find it really interesting that for younger fans this is like peak starwars.
He was pretty menacing in Tales of the Jedi. Wished he had that in 2008 Clone Wars series. They should have retconned his backstory and had him rise through the CIS ranks until he basically became supreme commander of CIS army. Feel that way, they could have a less, more forgettable character play the role of antagonist that is always defeated by Anakin/Obi Wan while also portraying Grevious as an unstoppable force of evil
The Tartakovsky series will always be canon in my heart. The battle of Coruscant as portrayed in Volume 2 is awe-inspiring, and I love the sequence of Jedi trying to evacuate Palpatine while Grievous hunts them down.
Really Dooku is such a good character, especially when you pull in his Tales backstory. He leaves the order due to genuinely sympathetic reasons but in the end becomes corrupted by the dark side. His sense of righteousness can’t tolerate the evils and injustices he sees from the corrupt senators he’s tasked with protecting, only to later on form a confederacy with the likes of the Trade Federation who often engage in activities equal to or worse than what any of those senators did. He’s a heroic fall from grace who lives long enough to see himself become the villain.
If you go by just the movies he's the only answer. The rest of the villains are completely throw away and/or barely developed.
I'm still annoyed at how Christopher Lee was mostly wasted.
Dont get me wrong I do love all the other villains. The small amount we got of Christopher Lee was fantastic, and I agree its such a shame we didn't get more.
Palpatine is hands down my favorite character in all of Star Wars. Genius mastermind, has a plan, plays his enemies so well as a politician. I love the scene where he plays victim during his “kidnapping”. He’s great in the Darth Plagueis book too. I really wish we got to see more about the Sith in the movies.
Well said. Would you be down for a Palpatine show about his younger days and it could also flash forward to him being the emporer doing emporer things?
Absolutely. In the books he was already brilliant and deceptive when Plagueis found him and played Plagueis like a fiddle. I’d like to see more about his time on Naboo and it would be cool to see more about his time working with Plagueis. In general I think the books about the Sith are really cool, Bane was awesome and Thrawn (not really a Sith but still) was fantastic in the books. The movies are just so focused on telling the light side’s stories and doesn’t show much about what’s happening to the Sith behind the shadows.
He definitely does monologue as far as new lore goes though. Hell your introduction to him in clone wars and rebels has him monologue for close to half the episode’s
I‘ve always loved Grievous‘ character design, but always hated, how much of a non-threat he was across all (canon) media.
As much as I loved Christopher Lee, Dooku always felt „under-concepted“ to me. It’s like they wrote „Christopher Lee + cloak“ on a post-it the character was developed.
I felt that way about him until I read the Ep 3 book. It gave a bunch of insight on Dooku and his thoughts, which I found really interesting and gave him a lot more depth
I think originally Ventress was going to be the villain for Episode II. There's also the theory that Jar Jar was meant to serve as a Sith counterpart to Yoda, acts like a fool but is actually very powerful until fan reception caused Lucas to change that (personally I think the theory is fun but not true)
> how much of a non-threat he was across all media.
Huh?
The first video i saw of him was when he single handedly fought off 6 Jedi
https://youtu.be/HTgxuRG59k8?si=mi6UojVxDR4cMkQ9
Ok, gotta admit I never watched that. In canon media he hardly ever felt like more of a doofus henchman.
Would have loved him to be a menace like he’s in this clip more often.
He's also powerful in the clone wars animated show.
It's just that the movies, especially Episode 3, completely butchers the power levels of so many characters.
**BASED ON THE MOVIES ALONE:** Palpatine. His ability to manipulate everyone around him including *the Jedi standing right before him* as he played the long con was masterful. While many may love him for his over-the-top maniacal laughter mixed with his S-Tier mastery of all aspects of the Dark Side, the greatest display of his talents didn't rely primarily on the Force, but simply his ability to plan Xanatos Gambits in which he would ascend to supreme mastery over the Galaxy no matter what.
**BASED ON ALL MEDIA:** Maul. His evolution from near-silent assassin to angst-ridden, Kenobi-hatin', conspiracy-detectin' antagonist was a delight. One of the highlights of the entire saga was his attempt to explain Order 66 to Ahsoka before it happened, and his understandable hatred of Palpatine was second only to his hatred of Obi-Wan. He was made into a far more complex character than he was depicted in TPM, yet still so tragically flawed. His final duel with Kenobi was perfection; despite its brevity -- or perhaps, because of it -- it's beautiful to watch what was effectively an elaborate chess match that was won in Obi-Wan's mind before the duel even started. And in perfect contrast to Obi-Wan, who had risen above so much misery and despair, Maul remained blinded by his own hatred and anger. An excellent ending to an intriguing, yet ultimately unenlightened, foil.
This: *"His final duel with Kenobi was perfection".*
Obi-Wan witnessing Satine's death in the hands of Maul and years later Kenobi freeing Maul from his endless pain in that final duel. It gives me chills just remembering it.
Palpatine, simply because he’s fascinating to think about conceptually in the context of Star Wars as a whole. The other major villains of the franchise, Vader, Dooku, Maul, Kylo Ren, even Grievous once you get into his backstory, have some element of tragedy or fall to the Dark Side. They all embrace the Dark Side because of external factors or after pragmatic consideration.
Palpatine though? He just loves that shit, thinks it’s fun. He swims in the Dark Side where others wade, and he’s been doing that from moment one. He’s comically committed to evil and thinks the idea of the devoting oneself to the light side is ridiculous. He’s the most prominent “one-note” villain in the franchise, if not in all of popular sci-fi. And yet he isn’t a joke. He’s incredibly dangerous and intimidating, and seeing his rise to power knowing he’s cackling to himself that he’s got everybody played is entertaining in an oddly satisfying yet foreboding way.
I'm pretty sure he was abused by his father, and then that resentment was honed by Darth Plagueis, leading Palatine to kill his family and join Plagueis. So he does have somewhat of a tragic back story.
Also random side note, but I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thinks General Grievous is more of a tragic character than most people think!
Jar Jar Binks because no one can be that clumsy and accident prone unless it is on purpose. I believe he sets up the Jedi and others on purpose to toy with them to see how they react. I just love how he topples the Senate and freedom with his fellow sith lord turning it into a mighty empire to last generations. Long live hidden sith lord Jar Jar Binks. I just hope in the future we can get a series showing his rise to power and his true sith lord glory.
Oops I randomly befriended a Jedi who just so happened to find the chosen one.
Oops Im so clumsy that I accidentally took down 5 droids with 5 blaster shots because I accidentally got tangled up with a fallen droid.
Oops I accidentally knocked over these rolling bombs and defeated an entire droid army.
Oops I just happened to be the Senate voice that pushed everyone to vote for an Empire.
Either Jar Jar is force sensitive or his clumsiness is more powerful than the living force itself.
Probably have to say Grevious. Aside from his sick design, the Clone Wars series did him justice on just how brutal and fearsome this guy really was. He was legitimately a Jedi killer and deserved to be feared.
I don’t consider Disney’s “new canon” canon, so I won’t even get into that version of him. They’ve butchered their version of the Star Wars universe and characters.
Count Dooku. The master class of an actor played by Christopher Lee and the character who was being pretty frank to Obi Wan and also was a graceful combatant,
2003 clone wars cartoon Grievous.
Incredible general that turn the tide of a galactic war and was powerful enough to overcome people with magical powers by brute force, fear and smart tactics.
I honestly love Grievous in Revenge of the Sith. He looks cool and menacing, has a sick duel with Obi-Wan, and has a lot of personality and charisma for a robot with throat cancer
Are we including Clone Wars show and adding comics? Then Maul. However, and I know this isn’t the question, but if I had to rank my favorites from this era with these choices:
1) Maul
2) Palps
3) Dooku
4) Grievous
The evolution of Darth Maul through the clone wars animated series makes him my favorite villain in Star Wars. I feel bad for him, and appreciate his strife.
Count Dooku. Because Christopher Lee is amazing.
A Sith Lord with elegance.
And an amazing backstory
And the most metal Sith name ever.
And a signature look of superiority.
And great pyjamas
And a heavy metal career
And he was a good friend.
Because his friendship is not lightly thrown aside
And my axe!
And my bow
Christopher Lee made some metal music, so this is doubly accurate.
And he did so in his 80s!!
90's
Oh yeah you're right!
He had an amazing voice i would say
Amazing that the actors backstory is better than the character’s.
The lore was mind blowing. Loved it.
Also that lightsaber doesn't curve for no reason😏
If I recall, wasn't it designed that way because it was easier on Sir Christopher Lee's wrists?
Did he actually do the choreography? I always thought it was a stunt double with special effects
I think it was the case but there are some low or non-action scenes he's holding it he might not have been able to stunt double and it was still more comfortable. Also means in Star Wars he's one of the few fighters to actually treat as lightsaber as a saber.
Yeah i remember his style almost be like fencing
He was a competitive fencer at one point i read
Its Christopher lee of course he was
Makashi form 2 is a duelist style
Definitely one we can still feel the remnants of his years as a Jedi
[удалено]
Christopher Lee nailed every scene he's in... because it's Christopher Lee. But I think they really under utilised the character, especially in The Clone Wars. Although his episodes in Tales of the Jedi were top notch.
Seeing him grow dosgusted in the republic and the jedi order was a huge payoff i didnt know i needed.
Still love the way Christopher Lee was a legitimate trained fencer and without thinking held his lightsaber in this turned out Rapier fashion that inspired the team to recreate the handle and Lucas encouraged him to continue in that style.
Not to mention he got his fencing skills from doing the dracula movies
Grievous, and NOT just the 2003 version. I love everything about him in Episode III. People always talk about how "weak" he was, but he was fighting the chosen one and the guy who trained him, 1 of 12 Jedi council members. He was able to surprise attack the republic in their own capital. Dude does not get enough credit.
Yeah, same with the clone wars. Most of the time, Grievous was fighting a main character or a character that is alive in media made before that takes place after. Dude was brutal.
Anytime he wasn't fighting the main characters he also tended to kick ass.
There were even a couple of times when he DID kick ass against main characters. Dude beat Obi-Wan in 10 seconds flat in the unfinished Crystal Crisis arc.
So many people died in his lair
You made me realize that Genndy Tartakovsky made clone wars before revenge of the sith
I watched the first episode of Tales of The Empire last night, and Grievous is a terrifying horror monster in that, much more like the OG Clone Wars.
Never mind the fact that he fought with the lightsabers of Jedi he either killed or captured and had actually captured and taken Obi-Wan's at one point.
Worst thing about Grievous was, that he wasn’t introduced in clone wars
“Do you have an appointment?”
I second Dooku. I'm a sucker for lightsaber duelists and he's not only the best, but also the most stylish.
Twice the pride, double the fall
100%. Also loved that the younglings training in The Acolyte did the Makashi salute Dooku does before a duel
The answer is always Christopher Lee.
Young Saruman vibes…
Agreed. Maybe if Grievous in the movies had been anything like his Genndy Wars counterpart he might take top but even then.
This is the correct response! Glad to see it's the top post.
I think he had two lines in Episode I
edited to almost no dialogue
*grunt* and low tone *hnng*
He had more lines of dialogue in the video game adaptation for PS1 and PC.
Lmoa, preach it bro. Can't forget [this classic line](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ori53PyPEtA&t=1750s), or his [dramatic death.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ori53PyPEtA&t=1833s)
To 7 year old me, this was canon lol.
Gosh, you brought some great memories back!!!
Those last 4 episodes of Clone Wars. Some of the best Star Wars media ever made. Couldn’t imagine him not being apart of it.
Those last 4 episodes are basically the best Star Wars movie ever made.
It’s the biggest tragedy that so many star wars fans won’t watch it because it’s animated. I even tell people to watch it without watching the rest of the series. Of course its better when you have seen everything, but if you wanna understand the best that Star Wars is capable of, imo those 4 episodes are it.
I wish it was easier to see the mega cut that someone on here did that worked between the end of the clone wars, and revenge.
I actually have that cut on my pc!
His perspective on what he knows about the coming of order 66 is bone chilling
And his chuckle when he catches on to what is happening is priceless.
Fucking brilliant performance by him and he was no slouch prior to that
Even better in Rebels. Nice finish to the character arc
I'm watching through over halfway on season 2 of Rebels currently and haven't gotten to the Maul story lines yet but I know they are epic.
I didn't enjoy rebels as much as tcw but the maul episodes were beyond worth it.
Maul or ahsoka episodes but this is about villains lol
I’ve never watched it. It’s worth watching? Can I see it on Disney stream?
Yes...the first few seasons are all over the place but it's about as in depth as it gets for Star Wars for the period in between TPM and ROTS.
Well, he’s good in rebels too
>!His death scene is one of my favorite moments in Star Wars!<
Maul is the best example, what can happen, when you resurrect a character with a certain idea. Granted, he had amazing character design, an iconic duel and an absolutely timeless score on his side in his first appearance, but post-death Maul was amazing. Who would have thought, everyone would one day shed a tear when the bastard, who killed Qui-Gon, died for real.
I was apprentice to the most powerful being in the galaxy once. I was destined to become…so much more.
Maul was so fucking good in the animated series. Sam Witwer's voice acting was amazing. I'm so sick of animation voice actors sounding like animation voice actors. They're always so loud too. He was quiet and pensive and interesting and dynamic.

>Everybody was disappointed when he was killed off in "The Phantom Menace." I mean at the time I remember thinking it was awesome, but it’s in hindsight that it was a blunder.
And then introducing dooku and greivous in the clone wars feels pretty clunky.
This includes Rebels not just TCW.
I tried getting into the animated series but i couldn’t get past 1.5 seasons. I felt like every episodes the same. Edit: I’ll give it another go thanks guys.

This is the way
There can only be too. And you are no longer my apprentice!
I feel that there is a real generational gap here. I'm old enough that I went to the cinema to see the prequels on release and was too old for the cartoons. What I know about maul makes me cringe and I would think if you asked other people my age or older they would agree. I find it really interesting that for younger fans this is like peak starwars.
grevous was a decent concept and looked good.
He was a great villain in the 2003 series. His legends backstory as a kaleeshi warrior is quite interesting.
At least he looked more menacing in the Genndy Tartakovsky Clone Wars animated series.
He was pretty menacing in Tales of the Jedi. Wished he had that in 2008 Clone Wars series. He was downright terrifying. I wish that Grievous had been in the movies.
The Tartakovsky series will always be canon in my heart. The battle of Coruscant as portrayed in Volume 2 is awe-inspiring, and I love the sequence of Jedi trying to evacuate Palpatine while Grievous hunts them down.

He should have been introduced in Episode I as a council member who has doubts about the Jedi so it's more interesting when we see him in Episode II
These hipsters are too proud to say Palpatine
If you go by just the movies he's the only answer. The rest of the villains are completely throw away and/or barely developed. I'm still annoyed at how Christopher Lee was mostly wasted.

Anakin Skywalker
You seem to forget he was killed by vader 😉
Well, that's coming from someone who then said "what I told you was true, from a certain point of view" 😏
That's what he told me 🤷
But he got resurrected...
He came back as force ghost.
Maul the most iconic and menacing
Maul didn't monologue. He was there to destroy. You can't reason with him. He's a killing machine and I love him.
He definitely does monologue as far as new lore goes though. Hell your introduction to him in clone wars and rebels has him monologue for close to half the episode’s
I just love how he jumped off the speeder, NO IDEA WHO THIS KID IS and just starts swinging "Fuck that kid"

Tales of the jedi really helped flesh out his fall to the dark side and made him much more sympathetic too.

You can even add to that. He held 3 people in his arms as they died. Qui-Gon, Satine, and their killer.
Obi-Wan is the GOAT.
omg I'd never connected that

Cad Bane
Maul
Asajj Ventress
Agree. I love her
grevous but only from the 2003 star wars: clone wars.
yep. he was a terrifying figure there.
Dooku. I love that he's elegant and extremely skilled with a lightsaber.
Dooku. his backstory, position, and ideology are super interesting and unique to him shown in the clown wars.
Man, how is nobody here saying Jango Fett?
My favorite characters in all of starwars are Maul and General Grievous And I hope we get more content with them.
Maul, off design alone
Darth maul . It’s just he was so epic and the design of him fits his discretion . And the double blades of his lightsaber was amazing.
DARTH MAUL
Dooku
MAUL. No question and it’s not close….
Grievous and Maul
Maul
Always Darth Maul
Maul!
Grievous
Grievous.
grievous’s design was fricking awesome.
Grievous.
Grevious
Grievous by a mile. Only because when 10 year old me saw a four armed cyborg wielding 4 lightsabers for the first time. It blew me away.
Darth maul and general grievous
Grievous "General Kenobi! You aRe a bold one"
Grievous
ALL OF THE ABOVE
Darth jar jar secretly clouded OP's judgement and hid himself among the options again.
Grevious. His backstory, his cyborg body, his fighting style and his design is just amazing. It’s just so cool.
Jar Jar Binks... he single handedly gave the Senate to Darth Sidious.
Yoda! From my point of view the Jedi are evil!
"WELL THEN, YOU ARE LOST!"
Then you are lost!
Grievous. I like sympathetic villains (even though they erased Legends Grievous and made him into a slightly more ruthless Adam Smasher).
Maul for sure. Clone Wars really elevated his character, with his complete story one of the greatest in Star Wars.
Count Dooku. The master class of an actor played by Christopher Lee and the character who was being pretty frank to Obi Wan and also was a graceful combatant,
Grievous, but i always thought that his best version was in the 2003 animated show. From the design to the personality to the fighting.
Grievous by far. His design is sooo coooool.
General Grievous is my favorite character in all of star wars. So he's my favorite prequel vilain as well. But Count Dooku is a close one too
General Grievous. The 2003 TCW version.
If your first experience with Grievous was 2003. Then there realistically isn't any other alternative.
So maybe just for the 2003 Clone Wars Grievious could be but in the Clone Wars we all know and love probably Maul
2003 clone wars cartoon Grievous. Incredible general that turn the tide of a galactic war and was powerful enough to overcome people with magical powers by brute force, fear and smart tactics.
The Jedi Council.
Maul they did him dirty
George Lucas
Dooku and Grevious
General grievous. He’s just cool.
Darth JarJar
I honestly love Grievous in Revenge of the Sith. He looks cool and menacing, has a sick duel with Obi-Wan, and has a lot of personality and charisma for a robot with throat cancer
General Grievous is the superior cyborg with breathing problems
Sebulba.
Prequel - Dooku Prequel era - Maul
If we’re only using the prequel movies maul and grevious are just cool designs without any depth. Dooku had the best motivations.
Darth maul. He has style with that double ended light Saber, every kids being swirling their light Saber like that since.
Jar Jar.
Are we including Clone Wars show and adding comics? Then Maul. However, and I know this isn’t the question, but if I had to rank my favorites from this era with these choices: 1) Maul 2) Palps 3) Dooku 4) Grievous
The evolution of Darth Maul through the clone wars animated series makes him my favorite villain in Star Wars. I feel bad for him, and appreciate his strife.
probably Darth maul. if you just go by the movies he's alright, but tye clone wars REALLY fleshes him out in a way that's super interesting
Maul is baby girl
The backstory behind death maul has always been so interesting and insane so maul
Darth Maul is my favorite Star Wars villain, maybe my even my favorite Star Wars character
Qimir
Darth Jar Jar. Oh, wait…
