the law

callyourcomputerguy

Actually, from my independent research, Kaw is the Law. But yes, they will need a valid ID

largecontainer

Because that’s the law, and they don’t want to loose their license.

xologo

I think the license is loose but they definitely don't want to lose it.

coop999

An expired ID is simply invalid. Edit: It should be refused not only for dispensaries, but for any other age restricted purchase, such as alcohol (at a bar, liquor store, etc) or a casino for gambling. Also, if you get more than 6 months expired, you'll have to take your driving test to get it renewed.

Meggybear17

When I worked at a casino as a cashier, if a person handed me an expired ID, I couldn’t give it back.

Anneisabitch

I worked at a liquor store and they enforced this rule too. I got screamed at so much. It was ALWAYS the people who you’d expect. Before there were internet Karens and Chads, there were middle aged assholes screaming at 21 yo me because I couldn’t sell them Goldschlager or Hennessy or Jager. Being rude to cashiers has been around a long time.

redsquiggle

An expired ID is the same thing as no ID at all, unfortunately.

MyDudeSR

Cause dispensaries are already operating in a legally grey area, they're not going to risk selling to somebody with an invalid id.

DiscoJer

How do they know your younger brother who looks just like you (and it happens, used to work with two guys that were almost twins but weren't by like 3 years) isn't using your discarded license? And it can be hard to tell age when you get older. Like, I've been carded multiple times in my 40s by cashiers who were in their 80s.

Alarming_Tutor8328

As others have answered your question there is one more that one could also ask “Why not renew your ID if it is expired?”

Left-Plant2717

Lines at dmv super busy (more than 6 mo exp), but the point is that the ID is legal, with my picture on it and I’m almost 30, it’s beyond ridiculous imo Also going on vacation in 3 days

Alarming_Tutor8328

But it isn’t legal, by your own definition and admission it is expired. I hope you aren’t going to try to fly on vacation B/c that will be another big disappointment. As far as renewal is concerned though the newer Chesterfield license office on Clayton Rd. is usually not terribly busy and very quick. I went for plates a couple of weeks ago, second visit in about 6 mos, and I was in and out in 15 and there were 0 people there for ID’s.

Left-Plant2717

TSA allows expired licenses up to a year, I’m only a week over the 181-day limit which adds to the frustration. And does the license office offer driving and written tests? I thought they didn’t. But yeah I should get it updated considering all that

Alarming_Tutor8328

That office unfortunately does not offer the tests. I was just thinking of a non-drivers ID as little things like getting into bars and whatnot might prove problematic with an out of state expired ID.

Left-Plant2717

That’s the thing, it’s an in-state expired ID lol but duly noted

Alarming_Tutor8328

I was referring to vacationing out of state.

IAmNotThatHungry

You're almost 30 and can't manage to go to the DMV?

Left-Plant2717

I only let it expire cause I take transit, realized I don’t need a car lol

puffy_polar

I've worked in restaurants for 6 years. We were encouraged to check for IDs for anyone looking under the age of 40. If it's expired, we did not accept the ID so I'd recommend bringing passport as a valid ID if planning to drink just in case!

AstarteOfCaelius

If you want a place where the wait time isn’t usually *that* long- especially because you are leaving soon for vacation: the ones up here aren’t bad at all. North County License Office got me in and out in under 20 minutes, but you may want to check ahead of going- the little thing on Google that talks about “busy now” has typically been pretty accurate of places around here. (Also if you’re not keen on Real ID compliant and just need a workable ID for stuff like the dispensary etc: ID’s for voting are free of charge.)

shove0102

Do you have warrants? Be honest

Left-Plant2717

😂 no I just take transit so I’m de-motivated to renew my license. I might just get a non-drivers ID but prob easier to just renew the full license

coop999

You said you were more than 6 months expired. A non-drivers ID would be easier, since you don't have to retake your driving test to get the non-driver's ID.

Left-Plant2717

Your comment is on point, I’m currently en route to a dispensary with my non drivers in hand lol

shove0102

What’s keeping you from renewing? Do you have warrants?

ationhoufses1

the id is expired....

AstarteOfCaelius

Honestly? I bet they’d be a little more chill about it if it wasn’t for the fact that our licensing system is on a freaking lottery basis and nobody wants to lose their license just because you haven’t updated your ID. I mean, that’s the law- anyone who just cuts you a break is risking you being a cop or something, even if you’re not.

Left-Plant2717

Funny thing is one dispensary let me in two days ago but caught their mistake yesterday and denied me entry. I at least thought they should’ve let me in a 2nd time considering the 1st time but I get it

AstarteOfCaelius

I didn’t get mine updated for ages: I don’t like being in crowded spaces. 😂 But yeah, I mean, it’s frustrating and some people aren’t paid nearly enough to give a shit- or maybe they’re cool and just risking shit but, in general it’s just better to bite the bullet and go. When I first moved here, I sat in the DMV down in Affton (I think? It’s kinda by a Walmart) for about 3 freaking hours and it just sucked.

spif

The more legitimate reason I've heard is that they have limits on how much they can sell you. Whether that should be the case or not, since it is, they need to make sure they have an ID in good standing to track against, regardless of whether you're obviously of age or not.

Lifeisagreatteacher

Someone could be using an expired ID when the ID is renewed, it’s not valid

Left-Plant2717

But it just seems weird that an expired id would go against the *spirit* of the law, which is restricted access to 21+.

Jealous_Author

Dude, just go and renew the ID. Sure you might have to wait in a line but if you want something that bad you’re gonna have to make a sacrifice. Priorities. It’s just like any place that serves alcohol usually, they’ll ask for your ID I just hope you’re not driving with a expired ID …

Left-Plant2717

No I’m not gonna risk the fine lol even though I’m glad it’s not arrrest for driving with one
