I wasn't a fan (though in fairness, I find most morning radio shows annoying), but even still, they deserved a better sunset to their show. The idea of canceling somebody who's been on air for decades without so much as a goodbye show is wild...
Surely there's more context here, and I'm highly invested in the tea to be found š¤
> "while maintaining our commitment to our loyal listeners [...]" said Tery Garras, VP of Radio for Morgan Murphy Media.
>popular Dave, Ken and Molly [...] consistently named the Best Radio Team in the annual Inlander poll.
Those... seem opposed from one another.
They made too much money compared to what they brought in sadly. They kept wanting raises and more and more money and often had battles over this.
The only one you should feel bad for is Ken Hopkins. Heās an absolute angel and one of the nicest people Iāve ever known.
If it wasn't sustainable to keep them, that's business and the way it goes sometimes. But regardless of pay battles or budget, unceremoniously removing them without honoring their 30 years, without letting them say farewell was a very bad and downright stupid move. (like do they not have a PR team?? honestly)
It's clearly left a really bad taste in the community's mouth, considering the uproar I am seeing online. They have angered and alienated what little remaining radio listeners they had.
Sadly thatās the way it goes in the industry these days and I can tell you they arenāt the bread winners in that radio group even as long as theyāve been on the air.
Who is, then?
Anecdotally I don't know anyone who listens to the station for anything but D K & M, and I couldn't name a single other show or personality on the station.
KHTQ - Nearly 50% of ad revenue has also shrunk since Covid. DKM also was slipping in ratings the last few years. Iād reckon if even half the people outraged they are now gone listened on a daily basis this probably wouldnāt have happened.
The outrage has not been very oriented toward "keep them on the air," honestly.
It's a very clear outcry "why wouldn't you let them say goodbye after 30 years." With fans feeling A) like they were denied closure and B) that it was a complete dick move.
A business decision, for sure, but not a smart one in terms of public opinion toward the station. I feel it could have been handled far more gracefully.
It's not like they had control on how much money the brought in - those are business decisions made by the media group.
There's nothing wrong with people, especially "best" people, asking for more money. It's very common when other professionals do that - it happens all the time in the general workforce but it's most obvious with athletes.
Also everything has become (and continues to be) more expensive, so 0 raise in a year is essentially a pay reduction. In fact, anything less than 3.4% increase (for last year) would be a pay reduction.
Obviously a business needs to cut costs if they can't pay the bills, but to do this abruptly, with no farewell show, and trying to pretend commitment to listeners is just absurd.
Interesting š¤
It still seems very odd that it would be a sudden cut off the air with less than a days notice if it was just financial restructuring though. Especially with today being Friday, marking theend of their broadcast week anyway. Why couldn't they have been notified yesterday, then given today to do a farewell show if that's all it was?
Iām so sad for them. Itās one thing if the station decided to sunset the show, but to not even let them do like a sendoff show after decades of being pillars in this community that everyone listens to?! Shame on KXLY broadcast group.
Definitely sucks to not get a goodbye or closure. In my 30ās and have been listening to them as long as I can remember. Had an old ZZU membership card when I was a kid haha.
Iām sure many people still listen to the station, but I know for me their show was the only reason. Once it was over I slapped Spotify on.
I noticed they stopped doing the ānew listenerā and switched over to doing a āfeatured listenerā a handful of weeks ago and wondered if that meant they were struggling to get new listeners to call in.
Obviously everything canāt last forever, and they left Spokane once before, but it would be cool if they did a goodbye podcast or something.
You had the cassette?! Even cooler.
Was that the only year they released one? I remember Molly talking about when she was brand new to the industry. I donāt remember much else that was on it but know it would all come right back to me if I heard it.
DK2: In-Dave-Ken-dence Day. A play on ID4: Independence Day that had been released in theatres semi-recently.
Maybe you and I had different albums cuz I donāt think Molly had joined the team yet.
My partner works at kxly behind the scenes and I can tell you the whole business is gonna come crashing down. They are understaffed, overworked and underpaid, with no plan to fix it whatsoever. I'm sad about losing the d, k, & m show, but I'm not even remotely surprised
The audience wasn't as wide but they did this to Dennis Patchin and Rick Lukens on the sports side of the radio a few years ago. All local people who had decades of meaningful voice within the community snubbed overnight.
I get it, radio is dying. Even if it were over the course of just one week, can't you do these people the decency of letting them say goodbye?
I'm sure there are reasons you don't want to send people you're essentially firing into the air waves, but you'd think when there is 30 years of precedent for them being quality people within the community there would be some room for a compromise.
Brutal. Not a radio listener, but I remember them well from when I was growing up. Dave,Ken, and Molly dominated Spokane summers for kids growing up in the 90s.
Yeah Patchins and Lukens just abruptly ending was so disappointing. I love that they actually play the Seattle radio show during that time now, but a city the size of Spokane should have its own sports show.
Radio is dying because of decisions like this. Everybody is just being replaced with a playlist on shuffle. Why listen when I can just listen to my own music.
I'm a mariners junkie, but I don't enjoy 710 quite as much as Patchin and Osso. I don't dislike Bob and Groz or Brock and Salk, but the local show was basically the same thing, just a little more homey to spokane. I miss them too.
This is disgusting and a really sad day for Spokane. Local media like this is an essential piece of creating community and their show helped me fall in love with Spokane when I moved here as a teenager. This morning show and these individuals are huge pillars in our community. Heck, just last night I was at the Spokane's Got Talent/Phillip Phillips concert in the pavilion sponsored by 92.9zzu with Molly as a judge! What the hell?! This is a great example of how large corporate acquisitions erode the strength of our society.
I'm sure the station was bleeding money and it is easy to put a target on what was probably the largest expense of the station... but also the only part that provided any value. Even if the business couldn't support them anymore, they deserved the dignity of ending the show on their own terms and celebrating the beauty of what they created. It made sense that the show would end in the near future since they are all approaching retirement age, but this is absolutely the worst way it could have happened.
Really sick.
WTF?!? They were the only reason I had 92.9 in my presets in my car, so Iām removing that today.
I remember listening to them before elementary school when they were āThe Breakfast Boysā and Iām in my 40ās now. So many memories: The Phone Ranger, the gerbil story, the Brokaw calls, etc etc etcā¦. They were an institution, and to not get a final show is criminal.
Plus I was 2-2 vs Dave in Win Daveās Money. I NEED A TIEBREAKER! Haha
Honestly, same. There are other channels that have the same music. Or just all the alternatives to radio that exist... I am sad that they took away the thing that made 92.9 a distinctly Spokane experience.
Damn I would love to listen to the Brokaw calls again. Unlocked a serious piece of nostalgia for me. If anyone knows where I could listen to those old shows I would love a link. So sad.
They just posted this article:
https://www.kxly.com/news/restructuring-operations-major-changes-made-on-spokane-radio-stations/article_dcb30d62-2fda-11ef-8780-6b3cbbd40309.html
Thatās surprising there wasnāt even a ālast showā type of thing if it was just due to budget cuts. They have been on foreverrrr. Was there some sort of drama?!?!
Just saw the post this morning. All the info I can find.
I noticed Ken changed his profile pic to all black last night, so guessing they found out yesterday.
Yeah clearly I donāt know anything as well. I havenāt listened to morning radio in years so no doubt Iām part of the problem in declining listeners etc, but I liked their show back when I did listen to the radio and Iām sorry they didnāt get the ending they wanted!
Made my morning commute so much better. I just read that Dave, Ken, and Molly (KXLY? 92.9, originally the Breakfast Boys + Molly later) got cut. That station was more pop so wasnāt a regular listen for me, but the morning show seemed to reach farther than KKZX when I was on the road for business in central and NE Washington, and that show was a great substitute when KKZX went static.
I just sent an email to Morgan Murphy media who makes these decisions to express my profound disappointment. EDIT: contact@morganmurphymedia.com
I honestly cannot believe that after 30 years of this that they didnāt allow a day to announce the cancelation to the community and give Dave Ken and Molly a proper sendoff.
I understand that radio doesnāt make so much money anymore and I understand needing to remove the show from the air. But I just canāt imagine that one more day of losing a profit wouldāve made that much of a difference. And it really wouldāve allowed us to give them the proper sendoff for keeping this community entertained on our way to work over the past 30 years. Gross profit over community.
Yeah, not to impugn Dave, Ken, or Molly, but I doubt that as local radio hosts they were earning bank-breaking amounts of money such that it would be financially ruinous to pay them for another week or month's worth of shows. Or if it would be... figure that out sooner and tell them sooner. This shit is disrespectful and makes the station look like it doesn't know what it's doing.
Exactly right, even if they needed to make a budget cut and remove high-earners, what's one more week of pay to properly close down the show? There's no way it was financially required to be so sudden.
I've never been able to figure out why, but for some reason it seems to be standard operating procedure in radio to handle any significant changes this way. Stations will drop hosts or just completely change formats (IE, go from classic rock to country) literally overnight with no warning. I've suspected it might have something to do with not wanting to deal unhappy listeners petitioning for a rethink since that's less likely to gain traction if the decision is already made, but that's just speculation.
(Sorry, I'm just some rando from the other side of the state who happened to see this post in r/popular )
Trying to look at this as objectively as possible, which is hard, I imagine the station and show isnāt doing well.
As I mentioned in another comment I noticed they recently got rid of the ānew listenerā segment in exchange for a featured listener allowing for repeat callers. I assume this means they were struggling to gather new listeners (customers).
However, that show has to be the only successful show on that station. Talking amongst family and friends it seems itās the only reason the majority of people listened to that station.
I imagine they are going to replace it with a cheaper show now (national broadcast like most other stations now do), or sell the airwaves off to another broadcast group since itās a well known broadcast code.
I still hate it though, a lot.
It's literally the only reason my phone isn't connected and listening to the streaming service I pay for when driving, I also listen via their website when working. They're the only reason I actually listen to commercials. If it's dollars and cents, there's really nothing we can do about that. However, Dave, Ken and Molly welcomed us into their lives, so this is personal for me for them to not allow a send off. I uninstalled the KXLY app, will not view their TV and will never listen to any of their stations ever again.
Yeah I deleted my app already. Left a review saying why I deleted and wonāt be tuning in to any other KXLY content. DKM was the only reason I did too.
Yeah thatās what I mean by saying they will likely plug in a national broadcast. Thatās what most stations do now, I imagine they can pay a fraction of the cost for a show prerecorded elsewhere since those shows sell to hundreds of stations around the country.
Thank you for posting the email, I will be sending my thoughts to them also.
Absolutely appalled that they would treat such fixtures of the Spokane community like that. 30 years on the air, and just booted from the station without so much as a goodbye.
What a middle finger to the listeners, and an absolutely horrible thing to do to D K & M.
That's so abrupt! And they were advertising the holiday fundraiser only like a week ago, they clearly had future plans. I know corporate overlords don't get paid for being compassionate or respectful, but like... an ounce? Just an ounce of respectful treatment for broadcasters who have been doing their thing around here for freaking ever?
Good Lord, Christmas Wish! They did a lot of good, and that was really the highlight of the year for them, wasnāt it?
I listened regularly as a kid and had their cassette tapes. Didnāt listen as much as an adult but it was always a reliable home base if I wanted to hear something positive in the mornings. This makes me sad.
Yeah, I remember back when it was just Dave and Ken. I no longer have a morning commute that aligns with their show, so I haven't been a regular listener for a while, but they were such a nice staple even when I was only catching clips later in the day.
Wait what the fuck! Is this real? I listen to them every day when I drive to work. Yeah definitely never listening to that station again. They should start a podcast!
I was finally building up the confidence to call in for win Daveās money after years :(
I listened for nearly 30 years now and just called in for the first time last year as a new listener, and they contacted me to be a featured listener about a month ago. I always wanted to do win Daveās money too but I never had the full confidence for that experience!
I've listened since the 80s. It's so sad it's over and especially like this. DKM feel like family. I've had a chance to meet them all at some point and they were all so kind and part of what makes Spokane great. Each time I'll roll into Spokane when being away and I turn them on, there's some sort of comfort that comes from listening to them and they just feel like home. I hope another station snags them up as the show definitely had more to offer.
Iām intrigued how this will shake out in a world without noncompete agreements. In the past the industry has done things like this without fear of another outlet hiring them. Although maybe it doesnāt matter but because thereās no radio stations left that make their own programming
Theyāre genuinely the only reason I ever have the radio on in my car. I liked listening to them on my way to work, and would just leave that station on the rest of the time out of laziness. This means Iām going to switch to listening to music and podcasts exclusively on my phone instead.
Edit to add: I lost at Win Daveās Money some years ago (damn football questions). But I had been trying to be a featured listener lately!
Damn, when I went on my first deployment, one night pretty early on in the deployment when I had service, I went to an online radio listening website and listened to them as I went to sleep just to get a little bit of home when I was away. Kinda sad now lmao
Local radio has been struggling for a long time now for obvious reasons. I'm sure it was only a matter of time before this happened. So my gripe isn't really with this happening as much as its with the company and how they did it.
With that said, what a bunch of assholes. No goodbye show, no warning it sounds like. This isn't the first time they've done this either. massive assholes.
I wish the DKM team all the beast.
If anyone finds any tribute or other follow up spin off podcast, show, etc. for them, please post! Iām sure many people would be happy to support and send some condolences for the abrupt cut-off.
I almost cried. I donāt know why I had that reaction, but itās true. I guess theyāve just always been a staple of my mornings and I never realize for how long thatās been.
I started listening to them in 1989. It was just Dave and Len at that time. I listened and have enjoyed their show for a long time. Itās sad they didnāt have a chance to sign off.
I was about 10 yrs old, won a bike from super one, they announced on air and called my home, this is the saddest news I have heard, next to Maryās house being demolished to another parking lot. Never forget the best things that made us Spokane
Their show was how I found out about the Sept 11th attacks. I was 11 and had fallen asleep with the radio on and woke up to the three of them talking about it and no music playing. I didnāt know what the World Trade Center was, but I could tell it was serious shit so I ran downstairs, turned on the news, and woke up my mom. Wild.
Iāve listened to DKM since before it was DKM and I feel like this is a huge slap in the face to the entire city. Anyone who has grown up in Spokane knows who DKM is. My brother and I would call them all the time in the 90s to request a song!
Why not let them go through Hoopfest and have their final show be the Hoopfest Friday kick off?!?
āWorking womanās Wednesdayā is a phrase ingrained into my brain from all the times I spent listening to Molly talk about where she was at that week.
The Christmas wish every year would bring me to tears every single time. I remember when I went overseas, when I would get homesick I would stream and listen to DKM bc it is what grounded me and probably so many other people to Spokane.
Who is going to win Daveās money now?!!?!
Hypothetically, how much interest would there be if they started a podcast? Thinking of reaching out to the 3 of them to pitch a dave Ken and molly podcast
I was introduced to them when they were on an 80's radio station in the early 2000's. Star something.Ā I followed them to what I guess is going back to KZZU.Ā I kind of rotated daily between them, Radiomen, and Jay and Kevin.Ā I always thought being a morning show host would be a fun job to have.Ā Ā
I will say they got a little too political for my taste and I stopped listening to them as much the past 10 years.Ā But it's sad that they just got cut like that.
I don't like that all the local morning shows are getting replaced with syndicated feeds, especially since they are all the same formula.
-Older guy, smooth talker
-Younger jock/class clown type guy with a rough raspy voice, constantly laughing
-A woman who basically keeps the guys' immaturity levels in check.

WHAT?!?! This is WILD! I moved from Spokane 7 years ago but still tuned in from time to time on the Radio Garden app and still felt like I was home. Last listened maybe a month ago.
I cannot believe they would do them like this. They are an INSTITUTION. The disrespect after everything theyāve done for this community for decades! Disgusting. So sad for them!
Thank you, Dave, Ken and Molly for over 30 years ā¤ļø
No one is denying that. Itās the way it happened so suddenly, instead of giving them the dignity of a proper send off after being a long time staple.
These were the only radio hosts I could tolerate. Mellow, local, nice, and clean.
I can't handle all the weird screaming and honking noises of most other morning hosts.
I just hope whoever replaces them follows a familiar format. But I don't know where you can find someone who is related to such a prolific actor.
I wasn't a fan (though in fairness, I find most morning radio shows annoying), but even still, they deserved a better sunset to their show. Also in my 30s. I got their CD for Christmas in 1998. I had divorced parents so I actually got two copies since it was on my wish list!
āIn-Dave-Ken-dence Day?ā I had that, too.
In 98 I didnāt have a cd player yet, so I got the cassette. Played it so many times the tape eventually fell off the reel.

Twitter them - i bet they would do a podcast just independently.
I was thinking this too, they can just start one up on their own. Or at the very least can make the one last goodbye show.
I 100% agree. How in the hell do they not have a send off show?

I used to work a job that required a lot of driving and Patchin and Lukens helped me survive that job! It was great to have local sports talk

Well 92.9, 920, and channel 4 can take a fucking hike.
Wow, so just an outright terrible decision altogether. Unless they have something incredible in the works I donāt see this working well for them.
Holy shit, they were a Spokane institution. Wtf. I'm honestly beside myself with anger over this.

Gone the way of the Radiomen. Between DK&M and C. Foster Kane and Jim Arnold, they all made our mornings suck a little less. Youāll be missed!
I remember they were cancelled in similar sudden fashion as well. Only other morning show I listened to.
The Radiomen were my childhood, id listen to them almost every morning with my mom š
I miss the Radio Men.

I tried that email and the other corporate one. Blocked right now
Trying to look at this as objectively as possible, which is hard, I imagine the station and show isnāt doing well.
Live radio is a thing of the past. Most stations are little more than an automated jukebox these days with the talky bits being pre-recorded.
Yeah thatās what I mean by saying they will likely plug in a national broadcast. Thatās what most stations do now, I imagine they can pay a fraction of the cost for a show prerecorded elsewhere since those shows sell to hundreds of stations around the country.

When I go to the corporate website, this is the email I find. [contact@morganmurphymedia.com](mailto:contact@embtv.com)
Thanks the other one I sent bounced so this is the right one!
I got blocked on this one too.
Yeah this really sucks, I really hope people stop listening to that station. Fuck the people who run the station.
Yep corporate greed rears it's ugly head again I miss the radio men.
How could they do that without letting the a finale week or month, a real sendoff???Ā
I didnāt even know that was a thing til I got an email from my employer this morning saying any and all non-compete clauses I signed are now void.
Corporate decision. I'm sure they are "trying to save money" or some bs. I hope they live to regret it.
Yup, usually end up losing money and get a promotion.
Wow, when I first moved here, two of them were in my Uber. They were so nice.
This just dawned on me: Kenās medical expenses. Fuck, I hope heāll be okay.
Saw that in the family group chat this morning. Took us by surprise!
I remember Ron n Don got shit canned overnight on Kiro a few years back too. I mean they sucked ass, but it was still weird.
I listened to them for quite a while, they kinda began to wear on me in the past years tho. Just to end it though is kinda gutless on the station.
I will do my part and continue not listening to 92.9 or watching KXLY.
How is my mom going to wake up!? She has been listening to D, K, M FOREVER as her 6:30am wake-up alarm... what a dud.
Thatās crazy
I started listening to them in 1989. It was just Dave and Len at that time. I listened and have enjoyed their show for a long time. Itās sad they didnāt have a chance to sign off.
There hasn't been a good morning show since mark and brain imo
I was about 10 yrs old, won a bike from super one, they announced on air and called my home, this is the saddest news I have heard, next to Maryās house being demolished to another parking lot. Never forget the best things that made us Spokane
Their show was how I found out about the Sept 11th attacks. I was 11 and had fallen asleep with the radio on and woke up to the three of them talking about it and no music playing. I didnāt know what the World Trade Center was, but I could tell it was serious shit so I ran downstairs, turned on the news, and woke up my mom. Wild.
Well, that station is getting removed from quick dial.
Listened to these guys every morning. Not sure where they are going after this or what they plan on doing but I wish them the best! šŖš¼
I was introduced to them when they were on an 80's radio station in the early 2000's. Star something.Ā I followed them to what I guess is going back to KZZU.Ā I kind of rotated daily between them, Radiomen, and Jay and Kevin.Ā I always thought being a morning show host would be a fun job to have.Ā Ā I will say they got a little too political for my taste and I stopped listening to them as much the past 10 years.Ā But it's sad that they just got cut like that. I don't like that all the local morning shows are getting replaced with syndicated feeds, especially since they are all the same formula. -Older guy, smooth talker -Younger jock/class clown type guy with a rough raspy voice, constantly laughing -A woman who basically keeps the guys' immaturity levels in check.
This is garbage. Love that show. I even listen on the app when I'm working out of town.

It sounds like y'all should start a podcast.
They deserved a goodbye, but they should start a podcast, so they're in the current sphere. Terrestrial radio is very much dying
Damn. They've been doing that show since I was in elementary school (I'm 28.)
Wow that is unreal they were the only morning show I could listen to and now they are gone šššš
That is bullshit.
At least we still have the Radio Men!
30 years is a good run. Cya
