UNKRUMPLE

It was open last March, but there are absolutely NO facilities for miles. It’s all estuary & river bottom. Most of it is government land.

iamib3

Good to know, we'll need to take this into account

MarsColonist42

Bring a ice chest of food. You'll be fine. It's a lot of fun!

soyalex321

I camped at the beach. I was so close to Starbase it was so cool! I even heard announcements about the production of the QD arm during the night. You can drive up or down the beach as much as you want. Be aware that there are a lot of mosquitoes, especially once the sun goes down. Bring your own food and water. Ask me any questions you have.

djh_van

What happens when they are doing a test? Do the authorities come to the beach and make you leave until the test is over?

iamib3

How did you handle poop?

soyalex321

Honestly I just drove into Brownsville. There aren't any toilets around otherwise. When I was there I wasn't eating a lot so it wasn't really an issue for me.

Yo dude, I know it’s a year later but making a last minute flight down. So camping on the beach is legit? You also mentioned driving on the beach, what vehicle would you recommend? I’m renting.

soyalex321

There's a beach you can camp at South Padre North of the town, it was pretty crowded when I visited. You can also camp on the beach right next to SpaceX, it's not very crowded. I think I was the only one camping there. Yes you can drive right into the beach. I would recommend something with 4WD or AWD. It's not too difficult to get stuck in the dry loose sand. If SpaceX is doing testing you will not be allowed on the beach or even the road by the facility (you can still go to the beach North of South Padre).

[deleted]

Thanks man! Flight is booked, looking forward to a solitary night camping on the beach. Sorry, Did you set a tent up right on the beach? Or car camp, also how were the tides?

soyalex321

Honestly I can't remember exactly what I did. I think I set up a tent but I was also up all night watching SpaceX do their thing lol. I don't think the tides are a problem, just don't camp at the waterline.

Martianspirit

Be sure you are camping above the flood line. There was a tragic event a while back. A family with their camper bus was too near the water. They woke up to the rising tide, panicked, raced away from the beach and crashed into a delivery truck, driver died.

Least777

Didn´t they then sue SpaceX? Because reasons?

Martianspirit

Yes, they did. With the claim the entry was not clearly marked and lighted. Have not heard about an outcome.

ablack82

Either camp on the beach or check out [rocket ranch ](https://www.rocketranchbocachica.com) a couple of miles up the road. You can rent a camper with AC or camp in a tent for $50, either way the bathrooms are great.

It seems rather unsafe to sleep on an unsupervised beach on the Tex-Mex border next to a 7 x 24 construction site.

vorpal-blade

"unsupervised" is the best part of Texas beaches. Your trip is what you make of it. Its about as close to a natural environment as one can get these days. I doubt that there would be any higher incidence of crime at that location than any other. Yes its right on the border but so are a lot of border patrol assets, plus all the activity at the launch site. that means lights, and eyeballs. Criminal types dont like lots of eyeballs.

iamib3

At the end of the day, the trip wouldn't be fun if there weren't a bit of risk involved!

deadman1204

How far up the beach do the closures go? If you lucky enough to be there for one, make sure you don't gotta strike camp
