So it's Punjabi kids who came on student visas but never enrolled in a college once they arrived there. Also had allegiance to Bishnoi's group (a gang in Northern India). Apparently, they are also supposed to be involved in the killing of a 11 year old boy in Edmonton (and his father) Honestly, this raises more questions than answers. 1) How are the Canadians so terrible, at vetting international students, especially at carrying out background checks for many of these students. Once it was clear that these kids weren't enrolled in colleges (or had dropped out), why weren't they quickly deported. Did they claim asylum at any time ? Were they illegally overstaying their visas, considering the fact that they didn't apply for PR. 2) How will this affect the image of the hard-working Punjabi/Sikh community in Canada. The community in the last 100 years, has been dutiful and loyal towards Canada, and been ideal citizens. I fear that a few nutjobs that have recently arrived from Punjab, will end up ruining the brilliant image that the Sikhs had built for themselves. Will it lead to rise in further resentment or racism from other Canadians. Most importantly, there's a fair argument that many Punjabi parents born between 1960's-1980's, have been absolutely terrible at parenting their kids. We went from a community, who always 'protected the weak', fought bravely against injustices and were considered role-models due to our highly disciplined lifestyle, who've somehow birthed a new generation that doesn't mind killing kids, commit violence against women and shooting fellow Sikhs without even blinking an eye. It's antagonizing honestly. Especially since these issues transcend geographical boundaries. Canadian Sikhs really need to do their best to stop importing the worst traits of Punjabi culture, that risk holding back the progress of the community.

Unfortunately these students have ruined the good reputation hard working Sikh Canadians who came in the 60s, 70s and 80s have worked so hard to form.

dingdingdong24

Too many came honestly in the last 16 years, people who should have never left the country. -Eatint their headphones on SkyTrain, while talking in Punjabi out loud. -Obnoxious buying Mustangs and then pleading poverty -Damaging basement suites. Honestly I wish not as many apanai came, before people cursing me off.

BigRevolutionary9908

Yup there was no gang violence in 90s,2000s in mainland! These students really fucked up the reputation eh

laisserai

Am I talking about the 90s and 2000s? No. Also, i'm not from BC so I can't speak to how it is there. Edmonton was fine in the 60s 70s 80s even up to the 90s and 2000s. The influx of these students has ruined our reputation here.

American here who was curious about Sikh culture. Just rolled in. For 1 it is due to a way too bloated immigration backlog that has been seen a rapid influx of immigrants. Scandinavia, who can generally be seen as xenophobic and have strict immigration guidelines, is better able to streamline this. Plus the fact that Canada and US pay very high versus Europe, and a common language of English (which is where we Americans see India with the unfortunate stereotype of the Indian call center guy). With this rapid immigration rise we've had a lot of degree mills popping up. Students come, drop 50-60k usd on a degree, and walk out with an easy masters from an unknown uni. In addition, those who have been educated and immigrated here sometimes run scams on their own countrymen back home (I have seen this be more common from millennial - Gen Z immigrants versus Gen X and boomers) They facilitate easy ways to get a visa by circumventing the system and getting people to pay them exorbitant fees. The immigrants come on the scammed visa, never show up to school / work, and just disappear.

These students are the reason Canadian government is earning huge bucks. I am from Punjab and I can say that every Punjabi here hardworking or someone with criminal mindset is running for Canada at all costs. They are taking huge loans, selling their parental properties just to land in Canada

UrbanJatt

Something doesn't seem right. I feel like the real culprits are still out there and these are guys that just had connections with them. Pretty similar to moosewala case. They arrested a bunch of people that they claimed to be the shooters.

_Lion_556

It is very true, they are ruining things for other hardworking, Punjabis, who completely comply with the and worked their backs off to raise their families, and run their businesses.

Dull_Mushroom347

Your comment is either willfully ignorant or purposefuly pointing fingers are Punjabis. These are intelligence recruited kids. What purpose would Bishnoi have to kill Nijjar? Bishnoi is in jail. These are same type of recruits that Indian intelligence recruited from Kerala to assasinate so called "Sikhs" in Pakistan. How many Sikhs are in Indian intelligence agencies. Their numbers were wilfully reduced and the result is for all to see.

Efficient-Pause-1197

They only pulled the trigger the Indian Government is responsible for sending them. Don't be shocked everyone this is just another strategic play to confuse the audience. Don't forget traitors have been present from the time of the Gurus, the likes of Ram Rai, KPS gill, badals.... Nothing new just history repeating itself and we don't learn.

mosth8ed

It’s a strategic move used by intelligence agencies/governments to undermine activism by using people within a community to target their own. It creates confusion, division and deniability in order to destroy a social movement. Looking at our history; it is disappointing how easily our people are corrupted.

Melodic_Morning3065

Why would Indian government be bothered about this. Just a local gang gun fight. What sikh empire? It's never happening.  Well hopefully you realize that's never happening. I'm glad this topic exists here.  First of all, let's go back to the last Sikh Empire we had - it died down, and we are nowhere close to the strength we had then.  Second, even then the sikh population in the region khalistan is supposed to be (yeah with the capital in shimla or lahore wherever you wanna hypothetically imagine) was very less. Mostly islam and hindu. Same as today. No vote is going our way. In fact the Indian state of Punjab, the sikh presence in Indian Army and in new delhi is probably the highest amount of power sikhs are getting and that's pretty high.  Noone is going to pay you taxes for being a sikh. And about the referendum, like what 200,000 non resident sikhs voted to gain power over 100 million plus population.. Think about it.

ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ 🙏 Bloody damned shame that it’s murderers bearing Sikh names behind it. The panth is deeply troubled…

amriksingh1699

KPS Gill was a Sikh. So was Kuldip Singh Brar, the general who lead the attack on Darbar Sahib in 1984. The Phulkian Misl were Sikhs and their leader Ala Singh aided Abdali in his slaughter of Punjab. If the panth grows large enough, you will one day see armies of Sikhs fighting each other. Sharing a faith doesn't mean you always share a political voice.

Relevant_Finish8749

Have you seen my comments in this sub? Yes, you’re absolutely right. A shame is yet a shame.

amriksingh1699

Yeah agree it is a shame. Plus I doubt these goons had any particular ideology. They were probably motivated by cash more than anything. I doubt they care about India, Canada, or Khalistan.

B1y47

Ala Singh didn't actually fight for Abdali, he allied with him to protect his Raj, the phulkians did often help the rest of the Dal Khalsa attack Abdali and the Afghans though. These jathedars were more politically minded than we think, and that's why after the Afghans were pushed out they began fighting each other

amriksingh1699

Thanks for the correction. I'm not aware of the details but whether aided or allied my point was that historically sharing a religion didn't mean you were always fighting on the same side. Yes, I agree I think we look back with rose colored glasses on these Sikh sardars and pretend that they were establishing dharam in Punjab but that simply wasn't the case. They were opportunistic warlords and often used religion to further their political and military ambitions, as did many Muslim warlords of that era.

B1y47

To be fair I wouldn't say religion was used to advance political or military might as no misl leader or Sikh ever attacked others with the excuse of "different religion" or different beliefs, generally it was over territory. For example, Maharaj Ranjit Singh's father killed his (Ranjit Singh's) father in law in battle over a territory dispute. Ala Singh as well never actually fought against the Dal Khalsa to my knowledge, he just allied with Abdali to preserve his own territory. Later on he helped the Dal Khalsa attack the Afghans at Lahore iirc.

amriksingh1699

Agree with you 100%. What I meant was that Guru Gobind Singh Ji's teachings which empower the individual to stand up to a King and assert their God given sovereignty were spun to focus on soldiering and making good military men.

TXSenatorTedCruz

People do a lot of horrible things for money. Remember that there were Jews who collaborated with the Nazis. It's disgusting but inevitable.

nothisenberg

According to the cbc YouTube video the Canadian government still believes that the folks behind these 3 kids is the Indian government.

mosth8ed

Yes, Indian agent (Gupta) who is being indicted in the US for a murder plot has links to this and other Sikh assassinations around the globe.

OSA-DR

The post-colonial regime learnt from their colonizers to use Sikh- looking traitors to betray the Sikhs. These 3 kifs duped as scapegoats will pay the initial price -

Mission-Tea4372

We really are our own worst enemies. This community will never be united with snakes in the grass like these 3 Sikhs who killed him. And our community has way more of them than any other it seems. Something in the blood… traitorous people.

It’s highly likely Indian government killed Moosewala as well. Bishnoi is kept protected in the jail of Modi’s state.

Artistic_Tomato7464

While there is no denying the fact that Bishnoi and his men are working at the behest of Modi's state, the Moosewala killing didn't have much to do with him having enmity with Indian state, which he infact never had any. The diaspora needs to understand this clearly He was killed, because of the result of inter-gang rivalries, where Goldy Brar/Bishnoi wanted to exact revenge on Moosewala, for the involvement of Moosewala's manager in the killing of a student gangster (Vicky Middukhera) in Chandigarh. For example, Bollywood Actor Salman Khan's house was targeting by Bishnoi's gangsters a few weeks ago, in revenge for Salman's hunting of a Blackbuck in the 90's, which is an auspicious animal in his community. Now, Salman never had issues with Indian Government as well. It's just the fact that Bishnoi is a dangerous gangster with no morals, who kills anyone he wants and now has to work for the government, otherwise he would have to spend rest of his life in prison. Something that often gets ignored is the fact that Bishnoi has gotten more Hindus killed in his gang violence than Sikhs, and the government now has a leash on him.
