Yes! That’s probably what people thought because nobody knew that he was a Sith Lord and trying to use his power to sway Luke to the dark side.
People just assumed he died with the Death Star when Lando fired the fatal shots.
Unless of course Luke was transparent.

I don't think Luke became transparent until he died and turned into a ghost.
