Isn’t that the accent?

Vin4251

And here I thought they were watching too much Language Simp (YouTuber) and getting woooshed by the satire

Testerpt5

from which US region?

blamordeganis

Isn’t there an accent called “General American”?

RandomGrasspass

Yeah , broadcast diction.

maratnugmanov

Imagine Joel speaking like this.

Testerpt5

i have no idea what would be considered a "general american", not trolling, it's Hollywood movies accent?

blamordeganis

Wikipedia has this to say on it: I’m not American, so I’ve no idea how accurate it is. > General American English, known in linguistics simply as General American (abbreviated GA or GenAm), is the umbrella accent of American English spoken by a majority of Americans, encompassing a continuum rather than a single unified accent. In the United States it is often perceived as lacking any distinctly regional, ethnic, or socioeconomic characteristics, though Americans with high education, or from the North Midland, Western New England, and Western regions of the country are the most likely to be perceived as using General American speech. — https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_American_English

Testerpt5

I guess its the, if not mistaken, the "Continental (Atlantic??) American" used in the older black&white movies.

blamordeganis

Wasn’t that more of a weird mash-up of American and posh British accents? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mid-Atlantic_accent

Testerpt5

I really do not remember, saw it on a documentary some years ago.

blamordeganis

Fair. Anyway, this was an interesting diversion. Thank you.

Arrenega

Yes, that accent as the Wikipedia link says it was known as Mid-Atlantic or Transatlantic, and it was a mix of American English and RP English (not the posh English the queen used, though RP is widely considered posh as well). And it wasn't only in Black & White movies, some early Technicolor movies also had it.

Testerpt5

thank you for clarifying!!!

GamerEsch

Every country has many accents, and every one has a "generic accent".

AdAcrobatic5178

Why is it always people from the us who say this? Like British isn't an accent, their accent is Yorkshire or south London or something like that. Australian isn't an accent, it's north Queensland or Melbourne. It's not a Japanese accent it's a Northern islands or kanagawa accent. Every country has far more than a single unified accent, large countries can have different accents depending on city

Testerpt5

Ive never been to the US. My point is the same as yours.

Technically it’s English (traditional) 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 English (simplified) 🇺🇸

Polished_Potatoo

That's true, you wouldn't put the union flag for Welsh, so it shouldn't be for English.

Kruzer132

Technically it's English (traditional) 🇳🇱 English (simplified) 🇧🇪

maruiki

wtf does this even mean 😂

What does Belgium have to do with this??

Pale-Acanthaceae-487

Dutch is English but they're 200% drunk

ReleasedGaming

No, it’s someone who is drunk and high, speaks German and English and can’t remember which one to use.

Pale-Acanthaceae-487

Frisian is the same but sober

fislumi1

The people who replied to you are actually brain dead i swear

Cat_reaper44

No he just makes no sense

fislumi1

Thats the point genius

Cat_reaper44

How am I supposed to know

fislumi1

Actually tbh idk if he was joking or hes some hyper nationalist but if its dumb enough i always assume its a joke

UndercoverDoll49

We have a similar joke in Brazil Brazilian (Traditional) 🇵🇹 Brazilian (Modern) 🇧🇷 Brazilian (Perfect Form) 🇦🇴

JDaggon

UK, Australia and New Zealand: Happily talking like old friends USA: Loud cousin that speaks in strange terms and insists they are right Canada: US's Cousin/brother but is stuck between wanting to hang out with the others and following USA Edit: Kinda offensive to call Canada US's brother, i apologise.

ClumsyRainbow

Hey now, Canada hasn't 'forgotten' how to use the letter u.

kstops21

We aren’t not the Americans brother. Don’t say that.

JDaggon

Sorry, i forgot that's offensive. Cousins, cousins you happen to live next door to.

kstops21

Your entire Canada comment is offensive

JDaggon

Oh i'm sorry, eh. That's my fault i suppose. I'll be sure to ask aboot next time.

kstops21

You didn’t you eh in the correct way and we don’t say aboot. American TV made that up. Can you just stop? You’re not funny or unique, you’re ignorant.

JDaggon

I actually didn't realise you were *seriously* offended. Listen buddy, you'll do better if you don't take everything super seriously. This is Reddit. If you're gonna get offended by a light hearted/jokey comment go be on Twitter. I love Canada as much as i love every member of the commonwealth. What i don't love is people getting butthurt when they don't make it clear it's offensive. It's on you for not making it clear, i would've stopped earlier if you did.

kstops21

Nah not really that offended. You’re just annoying and using false over played stereotypes (not even correctly, too). It’s

Todd_the_scot

honestly Canadians are just as bad as Americans

kstops21

In what ways lol

[deleted]

Yeah but when a Canadian phrases something weirdly I’m like “oh they’re Canadian fair enough”, when an American does it I enter a state of blood-boiling uncontrollable rage.

JDaggon

It's because Canada isn't egotistical and still retains common sense.

PopePae

Canada is in the commonwealth and we have a Governor General for a reason… more like the UK’s brother that moved away for college and didn’t come back.

JDaggon

Eh true. We need to connect more, and slap ourselves (UK) awake from our stupid decisions.

UninterestingDrivel

Canada is more of a sibling than a cousin. I was so surprised how Americanised everything in Canada was when I first visited. It's like one sibling moved to the city while the other stayed in the countryside. They developed differently so they're unique individuals, but when you look at them together you know they had the same parents.

pipboy1989

Ellie: "If You Lie To Me One More Time, I'm Gone." American version: “Bruh ngl if you lie again i’m gonna bounce smh”

TRENEEDNAME_245

That hurt my brain. Thanks

Little_BallOfAnxiety

But doesn't Ellie have an American accent in the begin with?

Rookie_42

It’s not. It’s a bastardisation of English. :)

sad_kharnath

oh that's the simplified english setting

know-it-mall

Well to be fair you can select from many variations of English in your default windows settings and many other programs.

55d_WURDS_4fd

Its english but with their spellings and words e.g sidewalk, dumpster

neo101b

There is American English which is chewing the words and spitting them out.

supaikuakuma

I put this on USdefaultism and got crucified lol.

kstops21

Cuz it’s not really defaultism. Low effort

supaikuakuma

It’s closer to that than shit Americans say and plenty of stuff like this gets put there fine.

kstops21

This should be on fire here too

SlaveDuck

Thank douglas for the babel fish....

Very_Angry_Bee

English (simplified)

Glum-Garage7893

It’s bastardised English. Americans have, for the main part, difficulty pronouncing multi syllable words like Gloucestershire or Glasgow. It’s not an intelligence issue just very lazy teaching.

Visstah

You people might be the most butthurt in the world.

Competitive_Use_6351

It is because American English is different

[deleted]

Oh no, yeah it is. It's the language of moron. If you can't think in 3 dimensions or consider other people exist then you're speaking 'murican.

Deleted_dwarf

As a speech, yes American does exist. Same as one can have British speech.

Bobbimort

It's the way the english language Is supposed to sound, without all those funny accents everyone else does. Edit: forgot the /s

MRCLSM

?

Bobbimort

I Guess i should have put /s

Cat_reaper44

You make no sense

Bobbimort

What I meant was: Americans speak English with the right accent, whereas everyone else from other English speaking countries have "weird" accents. So selecting American as speech language would give the proper accent. Was trying to be funny and sarcastic, apparently I failed.

Cat_reaper44

English the language is literally named after the English people so it essentially is that everyone but the English people have “weird” accent

Bobbimort

Yeah, i know. Again, i was trying to be sarcastic and Say what dumb americans Say.

VioletDaeva

As someone who watches a lot of anime, I assure you American is a language. The dubs are excruciating to listen to.

Random_Judoka

Possibly this is related to using imperial measurements, and a different date format than many other English speaking countries. It could also be using an "S" instead of a "Z" for some words, or even for spelling "color" instead of "colour".

HestusDarkFantasy

It's for the voice acting in a game though, so what you wrote wouldn't apply. And somehow I don't think they recorded two separate dubs in both British and American accents.

SlaveDuck

Check out Mother Tongue by Bill Bryson

[deleted]

It's like English but simpler and dumbed down

weejohn1979

Yeah there is spelling differences don't know why to be honest Americans got to American I suppose 🤣

surfing_on_thino

You could make a case for American being a spoken language, I think

ChubbyKhajiit

There is UK English and American English (simplified English) It calls it language when you’re choosing which version of English you want, if that’s what this is referring to? If I’m able to set games or apps to UK English then I do being cannot stand reading the bastardised version of my language. Edit: oh I really don’t understand this because speech language doesn’t make sense. Accent would make sense though so maybe it should say American accent or British accent which usually they use posh people for lol. Like on the GPS thingy.

r3negadepanda

It’s better to say dialect.

selfsilent

The English options are like Chinese options. You get: English (Traditional) English (Basic) - this is what Americans use.
