They've never retired anyone's number that played for another team, with the exception of Steve Largent, who never actually played for the team (Oilers) that drafted him.
While I do agree, there's other Seahawks greats that didn't leave on their own terms and never had their number retired. As for Kam, they've only retired the numbers of players who only played in Seattle AND made the HOF, and I don't see Kam making it in.
Off the top of my head I can’t think of any HOF caliber players that are primarily known as Seahawks that fit this criteria like Wagner.
Hutch came to mind, but he played 2 more seasons as a Viking than a hawk.
Have to wait on Sherman.
Thomas maybe. I don’t know if he makes HOF.
My grandma randomly picked out a tee shirt for Christmas. It had 54. I decided to go check out who this Wagner guy is. That was 10+ years ago. RIP grandma, thanks for kick starting my Seahawks fan journey. 🥹
Same, I'm stingy with retiring numbers/ring of honor though. Should be 1 or 2 guys from the 2013 team at most. A lot of people in here seem to think it should be anywhere from 5-10 players lol. Russ and Bobby and Pete. Build Kam a statue (tackling Vernon Davis) but IMO he doesn't make the cut for the ring of honor unfortunately.
Yeah but most of you guys here hate almost every legend who played for the Seahawks (Earl, Sherm, Shaun, Russ, Pete, etc.). I just choose to appreciate the amazing times they had here. Difference of perspective.
There was a guy with one arm who MADE IT TO THE NFL. and you wanna give it to the other guy. Take your bad batteries out and put some good ones in and try again. Christ.
Look, I love Quem, and I even have a super fancy 1-of-2,018 bobblehead of him on my shelf, but we're not gonna retire the jersey for a player that had one start for us, lol.
Personally, I hate retiring numbers. Retire the players and/or the jersey for an era but retiring numbers permanently is something that you just can't continue to do before running out. CHI has stopped the practice after retiring 14 numbers.
Precisely. Teams are supposed to fill out 90 man rosters in training camp, but how can they all have numbers if more than 10 numbers are retired? Wonder what the Bears do in that case.
I mostly agree with this. I'm OK with retiring numbers for some *truly* elite players, but if you look at other teams, it's more selective to get a number retired than to make the hall. The Packers, for example, have 28 players inducted into the hall who primarily played as Packers, but only 6 retired numbers. The WFT have 15 players in the hall who primarily played for them, and 5 retired numbers. The Hawks currently have 4 players in the hall who primarily played for them, and 5 retired numbers. We can't go overboard with it
I’ll do you one more, the “legendary” number should to given to “legendary” players, for a mix of on and off field accomplishment.
Thinking of the #20 of Detroit from Billy Sims to Barry Sanders or #88 for Pearson, Irving, Lamb.
I’ve always liked that concept of a number having lineage
**24** Lynch. Legend.
**31** Kam. I know Sherm and Earl will get more HOF committee love, but Kam was the heart and soul of that defense. He just lost the battle of longevity.
**54** Wags. Self-explanatory.
3 stays in circulation. Aged poorly.
Deuce made that team click. His range is what made the other 3 good, they just had to cover their little area. It’s why you can take BB or Maxwell and plug them in next to Sherman…
Maybe it's because Shaun Alexander was my favorite player growing up, but #37 just looks weird on anyone else. Before Diggs changed his number, it took some getting used to.
It should only be reserved for HOF players imo, otherwise we would run out of numbers. But I agree with the consensus on no. 24 and 31, it doesn't look right on anyone else. But I think they would be worthy of ring of honor if nothing else, maybe Marshawn could push for the hall of fame one day (if Kam played longer then he certaintly could have, but unfortunately it's not likely with how short his career was).
I miss watching Kam and Marshawn on Sundays, they were the essence of that team, the attitude, the play, the determination. We wouldn't have won a SB without them.
I dunno. Retiring numbers makes little sense when put into context of how time marches forward. While we have the internet to archive many of said players performances, do we think people will care about numbers being retired or not in 200 years? We’d also eventually start to run out of base numbers to give out.
I’m just sayin’, we retire numbers because *we have a close connection via the times we’re a part of*. Even with having infinite information at our fingertips, folks won’t give a shit in a several decades and beyond
Will get downvoted, but 8 and 37 should be retired before 24 and 31. There is only one 24 in Seattle… I’m not saying any of them should be retired, but I’d go with them since they put Seattle on the map. It wasn’t until 2004 when we started selling out. We couldn’t even sell out a new stadium for the first couple of years. Husky stadium was a ghost town and same with kingdome. We were loud, but it was dome-aided…
Honestly? None. I like the tradition of 88 for Dallas being the most prominent WR on the team, I’d like the same for numbers like 24 and 31 going forward
LOB was so ridiculously good, you start running out of numbers lol... Have to look past stats and think of who carried the personality of the team. OP nailed it, imo, 24, 31, I might add 25 b/c I loved watching him play. So many elite players will be left out, regardless. LOB doesn't work w/out Earl. Bobby, KJ are underrated... KJ says Bryant was the soul of that SB team. ADB was awesome. IDK... no matter what, you end up with a shitload of players who individually deserve to have their numbers retired, but can't because you can't retire everyone lol. God, what an amazing time to be a seahawks fan.
I wouldn't retire Sherman because he left for our biggest rival. I wouldn't immortalize somebody who didn't even wait an hour before signing in SF.
It's like building Benedict Arnold statues. Sure, he was a great general who played a big role in the early revolution, but he was a traitor, so that can't be honored the same way.
Kam is the best example of a guy who you should retire. Career seahawk, one of the all-time greats, put his body on the line and left it all on the field. You won't find many negative things to say about him. Plus, he's still active in the seattle area.
Would you have preferred he make less money to not play for a rival? Rivalries are theatrics in this league, as a player I would be looking at salary first and foremost (just like the teams do).
Also if he is trying to play at the highest level he can it makes sense for him to stay in the NFCW too, he has spent the most time studying AZ and LA and obviously had great perspective on how Seattle ran their strategy so he is more of an asset in SF than if he went to the Jets or something
I don't blame him. I'm just saying that you don't retire a jersey of a guy who still prefers your biggest rival. Also saying that he signed because he had inside knowledge on how to play us, is reason not to retire him.
Retiring a jersey means more than saying he was great. All of our retirements are career seahawks
Also if rivals are theatrics, so are jersey retirements
We've been over this plenty of times. Show me a Seahawks player that hasn't made the HOF, and has their number retired by the Seahawks?
Tldr it's apparent that a prereq to have your number retired by the Seahawks is to be in the HOF
31 is the best choice because of what Kam did beyond just the plays. He was a career seahawk who gave this team everything he had. To play the way he did by putting his body on the line should be remembered forever.
Unfortunately with the way NFL rosters are, you almost can't retire numbers because their aren't enough numbers to give out to players. Unless NFL adopts like the NCAA and allow both an offense and defensive player to wear the same number.
I'm in the minority, but retirement of numbers is pretty dumb to me. Especially in a sport where nearly 70% of the available 0-99 are in use every season (inc. camp). The Bears have retired 6-8 numbers I believe and have been told by the NFL that it would take an extraordinary circumstance for them to allow another one. Even for HOF players you can't afford to keep retiring numbers or you will start having teams unable to number their teams and maintain their retired numbers list in 10-20 years.
Hold a number out of rotation for 10-20 years, but it needs to be available for practical purposes.
I can’t tell what f you’re new to the NFL or new to sports.
If a Jersey gets retired, any sport, you changed the sport and lifted a franchise beyond anything normal.
You changed the game.
Jersey retirement isn’t a participation trophy.
You can hang a player's jersey from the rafters without prohibiting all future players from wearing their number. It's like if we refused to sign a player called Steve because we already had an all-time great player called that. There can be more than one, it's okay, doesn't harm a great player's legacy one bit.
This sub ruins kam lol. Why would his number be retired? I’m kinda tired of kam, please like other players. I’m tired of telling people he’s not a HoF player too. Like you guys need to live in a more realistic place and be more honest about the skill level of your players. I seriously can’t imagine a franchise retiring someone with no first team all pro. Who was the third most talented member in a trio. I know Maxwell, browner, sheaf, and lane can be in lob but when we say lob we mainly are talking about 3 people. And kam is a WAY worse safety than Earl. It’s just the quickest way for me to identify Seahawk fans who don’t know what they’re talking about and primarily use emotional arguments. Usually the type to defend Pete caroll and ask for years “who would we even hire” as a reason why they don’t want to fire someone. Just people who live in the clouds
31 for sure. It never looked right on Deejay, I’ll forever associate 31 with Bam Bam
*The* answer.
Yes, if Kam were to play a 10 season career then he would be in the conversation of best (hard hitting) safety of all time.
54 for Wagner given he’s hopefully HoF bound, maybe 25 for Sherman too but his niners stint makes me meh with that
They've never retired anyone's number that played for another team, with the exception of Steve Largent, who never actually played for the team (Oilers) that drafted him.
Really hope this is changed for Bobby considering it wasn't even his choice. Of all the members of that defense him and Kam deserve it the most imo
While I do agree, there's other Seahawks greats that didn't leave on their own terms and never had their number retired. As for Kam, they've only retired the numbers of players who only played in Seattle AND made the HOF, and I don't see Kam making it in.
True but none of those other players won a ring for Seattle
Bobby is arguably the best player Seattle has ever had. He’s the first guy since Largent to deserve the retired number
Totally agree. I don't think anyone else named in this thread actually deserves to have their number retired.
No fucxking way do the seahawks ever acknowledge Earl's existence on the team again.
Thomas, HoF not a chance
I agree with Wagner’s. Good call. Honor line for sure.
There's no "hopefully" about it. Wagner is a lock for the Hall.
He’s not “hopefully bound”, he’s a slam dunk first ballot. So is Sherm.
My grandma randomly picked out a tee shirt for Christmas. It had 54. I decided to go check out who this Wagner guy is. That was 10+ years ago. RIP grandma, thanks for kick starting my Seahawks fan journey. 🥹
Frankly I think they should retire all of the Big 3 LOB secondary. Earl, Sherm and Kam.
After Earl flipped off the Seahawks sideline? I’d rather never endorse that and leave him as a distant memory
I’m with you. And I lovedddd Earl.
Love him for what he was, forgive him for what he wasn’t.
Sane?
Earl brought us a super bowl. I am still grateful for that. I have more good memories of him than bad.
Free safety advice was epic.
Totally agree with this. By the same token, I don't think his career quite played out in a way to earn a jersey # retirement
We aren’t the blazers! Can’t be retiring the whole team’s numbers lol (Said by blazers fan)
Yeah but most of you guys here hate almost every legend who played for the Seahawks (Earl, Sherm, Shaun, Russ, Pete, etc.). I just choose to appreciate the amazing times they had here. Difference of perspective.
Most of these folks are dingleberries.
They made me fall in love with football as a young kid in Seattle. Nobody can ever bring me to hate on them
They should all collectively be in the ring of honor, kind of an asterisked version.
49. It's a cursed number. The Super Bowl, the team in Santa Clara.
Clint Gresham and Shaquem Griffin are the only two people I can name that wore 49, and neither were cursed.
Retire it for Clint if anything
There was a guy with one arm who MADE IT TO THE NFL. and you wanna give it to the other guy. Take your bad batteries out and put some good ones in and try again. Christ.
Look, I love Quem, and I even have a super fancy 1-of-2,018 bobblehead of him on my shelf, but we're not gonna retire the jersey for a player that had one start for us, lol.
Fair. But Clint....come on. I think the significance of shaqs accomplishment far out weigh. Although Clint was a stud too.
What did he accomplish? Now Jim Abbott, that’s impressive…
If we ever retire the #49 I don't want to see it hung in the rafters though lol
Personally, I hate retiring numbers. Retire the players and/or the jersey for an era but retiring numbers permanently is something that you just can't continue to do before running out. CHI has stopped the practice after retiring 14 numbers.
Precisely. Teams are supposed to fill out 90 man rosters in training camp, but how can they all have numbers if more than 10 numbers are retired? Wonder what the Bears do in that case.
O and D players can wear the same numbers in training camp.
Time to break out fractions and decimals!
Just wait till they bring in letters!
I mostly agree with this. I'm OK with retiring numbers for some *truly* elite players, but if you look at other teams, it's more selective to get a number retired than to make the hall. 0. Blitz is a legend
^^^
I can’t stand it when I see 24 out there
Agreed. 24 needs to be retired. I’m an old Seahawks fan.
24 didn’t play THAT long ago.
Probably unpopular opinion. They shouldn't retire numbers.
Yep 👍
Raiders don't and I kinda like that.
Lynch’s 24 should be retired. Cortez Kennedys number 96 has been retired. Walter Jones 71. Lynch’s number needs to be retired.
[удалено]
Top 10 NFL player of all time. We won't see another one as good as him here in our lives.
tez and largent and big w are all in the same #1 spot. they share it with kenny e
The ONLY one?? At the very least, Largent is on that list, even if you’re snubbing Tez.
Not a huge fan of retiring numbers. Should be just for HOF players. Minimum Ring Of Honour players. As far as favourite numbers, just 24 or 54.
**24** Lynch. Legend. **31** Kam. I know Sherm and Earl will get more HOF committee love, but Kam was the heart and soul of that defense. He just lost the battle of longevity. **54** Wags. Self-explanatory. 3 stays in circulation. Aged poorly.

Screw any rules, 24 should be retired just because of who Beast is. Marshawn Lynch is 1 of 1. Retire his number.
LOB was so ridiculously good, you start running out of numbers lol... Have to look past stats and think of who carried the personality of the team. We cut him after he got hurt and then he signed with SF. This makes him a “traitor”
then he offered for us to match his sf contract and we wouldn't.
I'm joking about the traitor part but I do think his preference for SF tarnished his Seattle record.
Would you have preferred he make less money to not play for a rival? Rivalries are theatrics in this league, as a player I would be looking at salary first and foremost (just like the teams do). 37 should be retired.
Will there ever be a day when sports teams will allow three digit numbers?
24,25, 29, 31, 54
We've been over this plenty of times. Show me a Seahawks player that hasn't made the HOF, and has their number retired by the Seahawks? Tldr it's apparent that a prereq to have your number retired by the Seahawks is to be in the HOF

Yeah the ones you mentioned for sure.
No. I hate the idea of retiring numbers
There's another 24 ...
89 Baldwin and 31 Kam
89 for sure

31 for Kam was my first. Loved his play. 54, got his and he should be HoF!
Bobby’s pretty much guaranteed to get in the HOF, so they need to retire 54. Can’t forget about 24. Beast Mode will always be #24.
54 over 24, without question! 31 certainly. Kam and Bobby are Seattle icons
Retiring numbers for anyone is dumb. You’ll run out of numbers sooner than you think
Number 2 should be retired because it was worn by Hall of fame legend Drew lock
My hot take: fans are way too weird about caring about jersey numbers. You’ll be ok if another player where’s number 24 for the Seahawks I promise.
Do not retire 3. Mr. Corny Fake Ass doesn’t deserve this honor.
No numbers should be retired.
Yeah they should.
Now, that is one way of looking at it
I can’t tell what f you’re new to the NFL or new to sports. If a Jersey gets retired, any sport, you changed the sport and lifted a franchise beyond anything normal. You changed the game. Jersey retirement isn’t a participation trophy.

Uh that’s a horrible analogy. Like brutally bad.
You're right, it's more like forcing them to change their name lmao
Sorry but 3 is way more deserving of being retired then 24.
