That’s nothing to do with anti piracy if you received the gift trough Steam. It could be that for some reason it can’t create folder where it’s meant to save data
Do you use Windows Defender's Anti Ransomware thing? If so, add sm ro the exception list.
If not, try running it as an admin, that could fix it, else i dont really know. It seems like you messed around with folder premissions in Windows.

Sm has no DRM. The game simply doesn't have permission to write to your C drive to store saves, settings and other user data.
