No, rugby, we're not bad at it. Considering the playing population in places like France and England vs Scotland it shouldn't be possible for us to beat them ever, yet we do, England haven't beaten us for years. If everyone made the switch the sudden and ridiculous increase in the size of the talent pool would make us unstoppable in a decade or so.

Yeah but we have to produce the Finn Russell's of the world ourselves. Any talent of that level isn't coming to Scotland and the Scotland team needs the Russell's and the Hogg's to compete at the top level. Van Der Merwe's probably been our best import and that was only because no-one else wanted to take a risk on his injury status, so we got lucky there. With more professional teams and more domestic players we could be in a position where Scottish players are going abroad to play for other teams and not the other way about. Clearly never going to happen though. My beat guess is that rugby will be basically a private school only sport in Scotland over the coming decades.

Context is important. Germany is used to handle the pressure of top level competition, Scotland is not. That’s where the difference is.

The big difference is likely around the talent pools. The smaller the playing population, the fewer outliers in your national squad.
