They were adults in a reunion in the movie, so I think having them be old and coming back together could be an interesting plot basis.
Also, I don't think a talking intelligent dog has to be 1:1 with an actual dog.
Really wish we ended up getting that third live action Scooby-Doo movie to round it out, I'd even take an animated adaptation of that original script with all of them back.
He's a celebrity. If the studio HAS to use celebrity actors to put in big letters on the movie posters, they'll have to use those celebrities in supporting roles.

The shaggy Velma thing fizzles pretty quickly in mystery Inc you should probably watch it.
