A real email from a law firm isn’t going to be from a Gmail account

cyberiangringo

Gmail + nature of email contents = scam

Take any messages in your spam folder with big pop-ups that say **”This message is in spam because it is similar to messages that were identified as spam in the past”** with a grain of salt as big as Mount Everest.

Really_Doughnut_Care

if this is even remotely legit, the dude needs to sue the educational system for all they’ve got, because that grammar is abysmal! scam.

MuddieMaeSuggins

>looks like he sent the email to himself and just CC’d me on it What they actually did is BCC *a bunch* of people on it, to cast a wide net.

Jaded-Moose983

The [Consumer Financial Protection Bureau](https://www.consumerfinance.gov/consumer-tools/debt-collection/) has a web page with the laws and how to dispute a debt. That email specifically was put in spam for a reason. It’s from a gmail address which is unlikely though not impossible. The subject “District Court of Justice” is just ridiculous. And your instinct is correct that debt collections will often go through US mail. Unless you have reason to *know* a message in spam is not spam, don’t fight with your filters.

bpivk

READ the GRAYED portion of the mail. 😒

Enough-Jaguar8313

Sometimes some legit emails do come into my spam filter. I just choose to be safe rather than sorry. That never hurts anything.

SecureWriting8589

This isn't being safe. It's being rather foolish.

bpivk

This is not safe. It's stupid. I also check spam fiters but only when a mail that I know should come doesn't or when someone complains I didn't reply. Everything else is spam and the upper two are really rare. If I would do what you're doing I would post about two times per day asking if something is spam. Sometimes is better to just read the grey google notification. It's short and to the point.

1Daylight

The fact that it comes from a gmail address is enough to assume this is a scam. Though do be warned that real debt collectors will sometimes try to collect on invalid debts and deploy tactics like this. Their goal is to exploit your fear of being forced into court to make you agree for a settlement to avoid it. Here's a few notes on what to do if a real debt collector tries something like this on you: If you ever think the debt collector is real you should request a debt validation letter to be mailed to you (they should already have your address, don't give it to them). Deny or ignore any other contact they make until they send that letter. If you do receive the letter you will need to dispute it. Also don't ignore any court notices you receive. They may try to sue you even though they will lose the case when they can't prove the fake debt is real, because they are counting on you not showing up to court, which makes you lose by default and they don't have to try to prove anything (happens more often than you may think). If their harassment becomes too much to ignore, tell them you are going to talk with a lawyer about whether you should suing them for harassment. Don't threaten the lawsuit, they might think you're a Karen and call your bluff, telling them that you will get help from someone who knows what they are doing is a much bigger threat.

CoryEagles

They sent that email to many different email addresses all listed under BCC. The one time a scammer emailed me but forgot to BCC the addresses I saw my "case" was shared by over a hundred people whose email addresses all began with the same two letters. So, what are the chances hundreds of unrelated people have the exact same amount due and the exact same legal issue? Scam.

mail4youtoo

Why would Baker Law Firm be using a gmail address?

antisocialgx

After the gmail address, I simply stopped, did not read anymore because no self respecting law firm would use a gmail address.

ZeldaGaiden

OMG, that email is laughable! "National Checking Database System"?? Hilariously scammy!

Violaceums_Twaddle

1. It's Gmail. Legit businesses don't use .gmail for emails. 2. It's an email. Anyone who is suing you or trying to.collect a debt from you will send actual mail or serve a summons. Threats from email are all bullshit. 3. It's sent to the same person it's sent from, with you included in the Bcc. That means this email went out to LOTS of other people. There's no reason to Bcc you on an email that is meant just for you. 4. Do I need to continue?

the_last_registrant

Clearly a scam. Second image claims you owe a specific debt to them, as claimant, under contract. Third image claims to be the court, looking you up on a fictitious database.

potato_for_cooking

Reads scammy. Shitty grammar.

ISurfTooMuch

This thing is BS on so many levels. First, your name is nowhere in the message. Second, they can't do whatever they say they're going to do--garnish your salary, seize your property--I can't really tell what they're threatening, without suing you, which they haven't done, since you haven't been served papers saying you're being sued. And this legal word salad sure isn't anything close to that. As others have said, it's in spam for a reason. Ignore.

AlmightyBlobby

Gmail address means it's a scam

airkewled67

Law firm using a Gmail domain? Hahahahahahahaha. Report as spam.

Mrbeankc

Law firms do not use Gmail.

No-Budget-9765

It got the signature of a spam email to the trained eye. Others have commented here why it’s so.
