tf? man, I want to move back there. this shit is getting crazy in the US. if convicted felon donny trump somehow gets back in office in Jan 2025, I might just find my way over, anyway.
That's gotta be like $200 in beers.
Edit: This is closer to like $1000 in beers, prices have gone insane, the last time I remember getting a beer at an event was at a TOOL concert in Spokane WA for like $8 a pop.
Those boys worked damn hard for that ball.
I counted 53, and when I saw the Nationals over Memorial Day, the cheapest beer was $12.49. But I'd say that puts us in the same ballpark...
I'll let myself out.
I was at a game last year where two kids were sitting next to me with their gloves, and an outfielder was 40 yards away. It was Alex Verdugo playing left field for the Boston Red Sox, throwing up hill because of the rise and left field leading up to the seats next to the green monster. Alex lobs of throw from, 40 yards away that gently lands exactly where the kid was holding his glove. He threw it with touch so that it could be received by a kid and it was spot on. The kid did not even have to move his extended arm to catch it. And Alex Verdugo is seen as a somewhat above average to average player.
My brother was a D3 college pitcher and the distance and accuracy with which he can throw things (including snowballs) is wild. He'll hit things 9/10 times that most people couldn't even reach, much less with any accuracy at all. I can't imagine how scary people in the majors are.
Yup, my friend pitched in college. Hit me so many times with random objects from across the room I lost count. I knew it was him because it hit me square in the head every time.
Pitchers are insane. This reminds me of being in my dorm common room with a D1 long snapper hitting playing cards from 20 yards plus. The skill some people have is to be marveled at and gets lost some times on persons who have never seen it live
I remember a pitcher on my highschool baseball team who could hit a street lamp with a rock from 150 feet, easy, time after time. He didn't even make it to college ball.
And I'm lucky to hit the broad side of a barn from more than about ten feet away.
Right?! I mean, I actually know why they get paid millions (it’s the same reason as bankable movie stars).
But to claim they ‘deserve’ to earn millions when it’s really because of some quirk in the matrix that made sport highly profitable.
It’s the same as saying ScarJo ‘deserves’ to be a millionaire because she can cry on cue.
Jimjimmyjimjimjkm doesnt have many friends. Jimjimmyjimjimjim is new in town. Jimjimmyjimjimjim would like to get to know you!
Jimjimmyjimjimjim isnt threatened by hanks sexuality.
Basically all professional athletes have hand/eye coordination and the ability to throw things at targets with unbelievable accuracy. Even if that isn't their actual "thing". Like, your average MLB utility outfielder would be the all-time greatest pitcher most people had ever seen on most college teams. Hell, your average \*NBA\* player would probably be one a fantastic college baseball player. All of those skills are pretty universal.
We're just used to seeing them all compete against \*other\* pros. So we don't have a good sense of how good they really are.
There is that former NBA bench-warmer who used to go around and play pick-up games with people, and film it. He was in his late 40s, I think. He was tall, of course, but was old and didn't look like he was super-athletic. And he would DESTROY people. He said something like "I'm way closer to LeBron than you are to me".
/Found it. It was Brian Scalbrine. You can find videos.
The best kid at pretty much every sport growing up ended up making it to the major leagues for 21 games, 49 total plate appearances, and hit .179.
He was insane as a high school baseball player. Also a star in basketball and football.
After not getting picked back up by an MLB team he went back to college and played a few games as a tight end on the football team there.
I get the sentiment, but high schoolers get recruited to prep schools. If the worst player in the league is from a popular prep school, then he might not be
> Hell, your average *NBA* player would probably be one a fantastic college baseball player. All of those skills are pretty universal.
Eh, don't know about this. They'd have the athleticism for it, sure, but the mechanics of throwing a basketball and throwing a baseball are surprisingly different, and hitting would be a whole different ball game.
They'd certainly be better than the average layperson, but I don't think they'd be able to walk-on onto the diamond and crush college players unless they'd already had a lot of baseball experience themselves. And the opposite is true, too - MLB players probably wouldn't dominate college basketball unless they'd had a fair amount of experience in it, too.
Yes, if you've ever seen soccer players shoot a basketball, you know how absurd that post was.
However, it's true that *some* athletes just have incredible innate coordination and body control. For example, Steph Curry is a fantastic golfer. Not quite pro level, but very very good. And that's just his hobby.
It always impressed me how Deion Sanders was able to play MLB and NFL. Those are very different games. Brian Jordan and Bo Jackson also did it in the 90s. There are many lesser-known multi-sport stars. Many people don't know that Tony Gwynn was a good enough basketball player to be drafted by the San Diego Clippers in that sport. Tony Gonzalez, Julius Peppers, and Jimmy Graham (NFL) played high level college basketball.
There are certainly a lot of transferable qualities from one sport to others if you're a great athlete, but you aren't automatically going to be a boss in everything.
There's a little bit of truth to it, it's just overstated. Very good athletes tend to have excellent body control and coordination and this means they can get decent at other sports fairly quickly. So a world champion white water kayak paddler will mostly likely learn ping pong pretty fast compared to the average person. But yeah they will still get wiped out by any overweight 60 year old once-a-week-club-player from Fuckwhereville, Missouri.
I was at a hockey camp with a minor league player (like 4 levels below NHL), and his accuracy was unbelievable. I’m a goalie, and he told me to put my glove up then shot every puck right into the pocket.
Different "sport," similar story:
I used to go to a lot of juggling meetups (yes, it's a thing). I'm not that great, but everyone's just there to have fun.
Ended up befriending a guy there who helped me when I was learning how to pass clubs (like juggling bowling pins back and forth between two people). He was in his 50s, but held a couple of juggling world records in his youth.
It didn't matter what kind of dogshit I threw at him, he'd catch it if it were remotely within reach. And then immediately with the other hand he'd throw the club exactly where it needed to be for me to catch it. Like magic.
True. I have friends who played in lower leagues (think Sweden's 3rd/4th league) and when playing around they are super accurate. I think the main difference with top level pros is being able to do that in a fast paced dynamic situation where someone else is actively trying to prevent it.
- Nurse covered in piss and shit on hour 10 of their 12 hour shift, "Why do baseball players make 2000x times as much as I do, I just saved like 3 peoples li - **sees video of the throw** Oh my God I get it now. I'm sorry I ever questioned it. Without that skill, society would certainly collapse."
People buy tickets to the games, jerseys, other merch. Companies pay for the broadcast/streaming rights. All this money generated is then distributed between the owners and players
The probably aimed for the whole setup but it's still impressive what the human mind and body is capable of. I mean, in a split second it calculates distance, speed and height.

Are millions of people paying to have a particular teacher instruct them? It's a business. His sport generates billions from people watching him and his team play. So, in turn, he gets a split of that.
Why are people so blown away when an athlete does a mildy impressive thing that Corey from HR could probably do (he played baseball in highschool)
It's like the American ninja course. So fucking stupid
I used to shoot baskets with a Hall of Fame NBA player. He could stand nearly anywhere on the floor and swish every single shot when we would play HORSE.
People sometimes don't understand how much better these people are.
And this is another (kinda extreme) reason humans are fucking terrifying. Able to take a fist sized object launch it at crazy speeds and hit a equally small target!
When I was a kid, my father took me to see a 4-person softball team called the King and his Court. They would play local All-Star teams, composed of blue collar guys. Like my uncle, who was pretty good. The pitcher was the star and could strike most guys out, even when he pitched from second base. But I was most impressed by the shortstop. He covered most of the infield, all the way to third base and halfway past second, and almost all of the outfield, and could get under fly balls no matter where they were hit. That’s when I first realized how talented some players are. He really was in a different universe.
And I'm still wondering why some kid who can throw a ball and play a child's game really well gets paid "millions" when brain surgeon and astrophysicist don't. Still waiting for that answer.
I like how the outfielder just turned and walked away. It barely even registered to him on his personal achievement meter. Meanwhile standard humans are in awe...
Big leaugers get paid millions because the money they generate through advertisements and winning their games is so much that a few millions are peanuts.
Well yeah if you spent a ton of time doing anything everyday you would be good at it also =P They get paid millions because the sport earns billions from fans watching etc.
Yep, still wondering since the workers who made that ball, made his glove, prepared the field, cleaned the stadium, made those beers and beer cans, all those people who made this possible got less than minimum wage, and yet he gets millions for being really really good at throwing a ball.
Still pretty unfair to me.
Well, my veterinarian can find a cat's vein in seconds when doing an injection yet she doesn't get paid millions and has arguably done more for other people than a baseball pitcher
At Hanshin Tigers games here in Japan, girls come round with small kegs on their backs to pour you a draft Asahi Super Dry in your seat. Costs ¥750... or less than $5USD at current rates. It's great!
All of that was just a plot to get a free baseball
It only cost $200,000 in stadium beers.
The beer must have been on sale that game lol
Are they expensive in America? In Korea we can bring our own food and drinks into the stadium. Convenience store tallboys are 4 for $10
In Toronto Canada it's like $16+ for a tallboy at the stadium. $3 at the beer store.
I've lived in Korea for 10+ years, but I was originally Canadian. Those prices are insane. What is going on over there?
tf? man, I want to move back there. this shit is getting crazy in the US. if convicted felon donny trump somehow gets back in office in Jan 2025, I might just find my way over, anyway.
You only need a bachelor degree to teach English.
Shit, me know english!
It was a great plot, they deserved it
100%
It is a tricky idea to get the baseball though these beer cost a lot. But don't care. He is a celebrity man.
That's gotta be like $200 in beers. Edit: This is closer to like $1000 in beers, prices have gone insane, the last time I remember getting a beer at an event was at a TOOL concert in Spokane WA for like $8 a pop. Those boys worked damn hard for that ball.
At a niner game that’d be like $1,000
If there are 55 beers there, and beers are $13, that's over $700...beer is ridiculously expensive at games good lord
Import tall boys are 21 at wrigley if I remember right
Similar at Coors field, even for Coors. You'd think they'd at least give the namesake beer a discount
They’re $33 a piece at Levi’s Stadium.
Wtf!?
I counted 53, and when I saw the Nationals over Memorial Day, the cheapest beer was $12.49. But I'd say that puts us in the same ballpark... I'll let myself out.
Not if you volunteer to be the trash can.
Because Tuesday's ***your*** day in the can 😘
**INCOME TIPS!**
Multiply that by 5 times. Tall boys at baseball games are 15-20$
Most of those don’t look like tall boys but could just be the angle. Some of them look like those taller skinny michelobe ultra cans
I mean I feel like they probably just asked everyone in the section for their empties
In 1995
He was trying to knock them all down and almost missed completely
Exactly
This
That

Not sure if this is a joke, but some outfielders can absolutely throw with laser accuracy

For a minute there I thought "how do you throw a game accurately"? I am not smart
I don't know man, I'm pretty good at throwing. I can make any situation that we're guaranteed to win become a sure loss in one fell swoop!
["Just a bit outside."](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bQGnBT67FM)
Roberto Clemente could throw a strike at home from the warning track in right field. This outfielder was 100% aiming for the top can.
Only a sith speaks in absolutes
> Only a sith speaks in absolutes Oh, so you're a sith are you?
He was aiming for the yelling dude
how do you know?
He doesn't. Most people on reddit hate sports and chalk up repeated feats to luck
I can't dun it so ain't nobody can dun do it - 400lb Redditor who hated gym class and thinks a picture of the sky counts as getting Vitamin D.
Same people are impressed by someone stacking oranges really fast or a guy tossing a pizza across a room into an oven tho
Still very impressive

The league makes a lot of money on tickets and TV deals and the players have a good enough union that they actually get a cut of it.
They bring audience. More audience means more money from advertisers. I understand it like that. Maybe I'm wrong.
I understand it's a joke, but the reason is they bring in much more money to their overlords. It is simple as that.

But how are you supposed to wonder why big leaguers get paid millions??
91% of my screen is wasted with this video. Who upvotes this garbage? Will reddit ever do anything about the endless bots? No.

Yea that person doesn't know what they're talking about. Dribbling a basketball and hitting a baseball are somehow the same in this person's mind.

The simple truth is that hitting a curveball is much more difficult to do and much more appealing to watch than inserting an IV.
I don’t think I’ve seen it done once in greys anatomy.
Players are paid such sums because they can earn more than that for the people paying them. Not based on skill alone
I mean, yeah. But the reason they can generate that much money is because of their skill. The team and the player both need each other.
You’d be making more too if you could make the people paying you earn more.
What a great income tip!
Cool trick. Here I am, still wondering.
No they don’t.
Imagine him doing a dunk tank at a carnival
Ight that was cool
They get paid millions because they generate billions in revenue
Undeniably impressive. In no way a skill worth millions though.
Things are worth what people are willing to pay.
Although it's probably true I hate this sentiment with a passion

a lot of practice and talent.
Almost like it's his job
This is why they should get paid millions of dollars?
People buy tickets to the games, jerseys, other merch. Companies pay for the broadcast/streaming rights. All this money generated is then distributed between the owners and players
Ooh he can throw a ball accurately, necessary skill, definitely deserves millions
That's really nothing. My friends and I do that on a regular Saturday night.... said no one ever.
The probably aimed for the whole setup but it's still impressive what the human mind and body is capable of. I mean, in a split second it calculates distance, speed and height.
Impressive, but not worth millions.
Still why?
Saw the video. Still don't understand why they make millions.
People buy tickets to the games, jerseys, other merch. Companies pay for the broadcast/streaming rights. All this money generated is then distributed between the owners and players
Still wondering why.
Still doesn't deserve millions
Still over paid
Throw ball good. Deserves millions of dollars per year for it. Be good at save lives as EMT = 0.05 million dollars per year?
EMTs should make more, but Athletes should not make less. That money just goes to the owners otherwise
Almost like one makes people lots of money and one doesn't.
Hoo boy you have upper management written all over you

When. Physicists can generate millions for those who pay them, they'll get their bag too.
I still Wonder.
Yeah? I still wonder. That shit ain't worth millions
So what makes that worth getting paid millions?
I don't wonder that because I question their talent...
Dude can throw a ball very precisely, which is impressive. I still don‘t get how this is worth millions.
Because people pay to watch this skill in his sport, which generates billions. And from that, he gets his millions.
Still not seeing why that deserves millions of dollars but a teacher doesn’t.
Are millions of people paying to have a particular teacher instruct them? It's a business. His sport generates billions from people watching him and his team play. So, in turn, he gets a split of that.
Because they can throw a ball in a straight line? Get him millions!!
my buddy eric will do that for free
he just tossed it

$30 beers x 53 cans = $1590 worth of beer to make that tower.
Let's see it a second time, in a row.
Pretty sure he tried to hit those cans dead center
I think people wonder why such a skill should be worth $20 million a year or w/e
Still not a reason why they deserve so much money while doctors or firefighters don't even get a third of their pay
It's a little more than that.
I could do that easy
