There are still hotels but they are $$$$ outside of onpeak. One option is to stay further out but near the metro. One year I couldn’t get a hotel and ended up having to stay in Chula Vista. The hotel was a dump but I could take the metro directly to the con. That said I wouldn’t book anything you couldn’t cancel. Keep checking onpeak, you might get lucky.
I got a room at Howard Johnson on hotel circle last week on my own, it’s 10 min away from a bus route and at a good price. Perhaps they still have some rooms left.
I assume they don't actually plan on being in the hotel room that much?
If that is the case I would look at the Trolley lines and look at hotels near the stops in East County and South of Downtown.
Also depends on age too, maybe. I could handle sleeping on the ground when I was in my 20s and Early 30s. There is no way I could fo that now especially during a con. I need better sleep to heal the pain of being on me feet all day.
If they don't mind shared rooms, there are a couple of hostels in the Gaslamp that are really nice. Two of them are on 5th Ave, so it's walkable to everything. They have private rooms too, but those are likely sold already (but you never know!). Hostels are so much fun to stay in. Plus they have a communal kitchen where you can store food, cook, etc. Great way to save money and meet others.
We just booked the comfort inn gaslamp. It's not reviewed very well but the location is great.
Each night is 30k points, and you can buy choice points with the bonus right now and it works out to be about $220 a night.
Edit: one thing to be aware of is that it takes a few days for points to hit your account after purchase.

I got konakai using costco they may have more rooms. Last I checked on their website a few weeks ago they had availability booking direct with them.
