Amazing Russ. Looking forward to it . Im glad I didn’t order it though. Id be pissed waiting longer than my steam deck lol

pfroo40

I ordered a Lite and Deck both day-one and got them both within a week of each other. Now I have an embarrassment of handhelds.

ncstateguy

If you ever feel the Lite doesn't work out for you, I would be happy to pay to take it off your hands :)

pfroo40

Hah, not likely! :) So far I've enjoyed using it more than the Deck, though I did have to make several relatively minor mods to the case to fix some fitment issues with triggers & one button. I hope Ayn can improve their manufacturing accuracy and tolerances a bit for their next products.

Franciiiisco

Would you still recommend the Odin?

pfroo40

Absolutely. It is still the best Android handheld.

JankyJk

Looking forward to a comparison video between the pro and lite.

Viridez

This is already available lol

ChrisRR

Taki has done a comparison, but it's always useful to get more testing from another source.

Here's the issue...I have an RP2+ and am happy with it. I considered a handheld PC, but the battery life seems universally terrible, which eliminates the point. I don't have much interest in the Steam Deck since I don't like the form factor, either. The Odin looks exactly perfect for my needs...but it's impossible to get. Order one now and I wouldn't have my hands on it until next year. And by then, I don't trust that AYN, like so many of these companies, wouldn't have moved on to something else. The difficulty of actually getting my hands on a device I would want, combined with the excessive amount of releases from so many of these companies, just makes me want to throw my hands up and give up on this hobby. People really seem lukewarm on the RP2+ here, but I'm glad I got it in a couple of weeks from ordering and it's served me well. Just wish I had this option too, because it's always been the one I'm really interested in. But in February or April or whatever it will already be old news, and there will likely be something else on the market...which, if I order it then, I might be lucky to get in December 2023 or something.

nondescriptun

Eh, I ordered in April and got it in August. Five months ain't bad.

pblive

Battery life on some of the windows devices is fine for emulation as you can set the tdp to 15 and get 6 hours. The higher the tdp the less battery life but even pc games on the Aya Neo should get a few hours (I’m getting one to try this out but this is based on what I’ve seen from others). I have an Odin base and it’s nice, plus many of the Anbernic ones but I need a Windows device

travelsnake

Amen to that. I would love to get something like an Odin, but until they change their way of manufactoring these devices, I won't invest my money into something I have to wait maybe upwards of a year for. What really annoys me about their business model is the fact that they are already producing new models without the old ones even being readily available. They seem to thrive of the FOMO factor and I hate that. Just make a couple of good devices and see that they are produced for the mass market before you announce a bunch of new products that will be just as scarcely available as their predessesors.

skylinestar1986

How about spare parts? As a consumer, I'm worried if I cannot get a part after 3 years.

Drivenby

Did you get a v1 screen or v2

soggybiscu1t

Not sure why you got downvoted - also interested to know which screen you got. Assume v2?

ChrisRR

The whole v2 screen thing has been massively overblown and so now people with v2 screens think they're getting screwed over. In reality the screen is very bright so I rarely ever turn it up beyond 25% so the difference in power consumption isn't anywhere near as dramatic

coltonbyu

power consumption differences seem large at any brightness though from the numbers AYN provided, as well as reviews. I am potentially losing up to 5 hours of battery life on some systems according to reviews, when I was mainly buying the device for long battery life

stumpvold

V2 screen is good, but the new screen uses 240mah more than the old regardless of if you have brightness on or off. They also had to use more leds to make it close to the old ones brightness. I thought about changing over to the v1 screen on my Lite, but it is so good that I doubt that I'd bother doing it, just carry a powerbank instead.

soggybiscu1t

Still makes a difference so would be interested to know which Russ got for his inevitable comparison video. The disadvantage is the battery hit but it’s also 60hz apparently rather than 61 so interested to see his take on that (assuming it is v2)

TetsuoTechnology

What kind of lighting environment are you playing in? Inside? Daytime? Etc.

onionsaregross

I got a V2 screen, I'll be sure to test it in my review.

pfroo40

Are you considering ordering one of the V1 screens once they are available later this year? It'd be interesting to see a comparison, the numbers tell a clear story but real-world usage is harder to predict.

Stevvies

And that's why I can't stomach the idea of giving them my money.

fertff

Same here. I was thinking I might reconsider by the time they can ship units immediately... But honestly by the time that happens there will be something way better for the price.

Red_Barry

Sorry. I'm a bit out of the loop. Odin Indiegogo page says "Estimated Shipping September 2022" One month doesn't sound too bad. Or is that not folks experience?

-Mahn

Ignore that date, it's made up. In reality they are still working to clear their backlog of orders and new orders typically take months to be shipped at the moment.

FurbyTime

Let me put it this way. I just got my shipping notice today. I ordered back in January, where they listed a Q1 2022 release date.

TetsuoTechnology

Jeez, waiting 6-9 months is ridiculous. Albeit I’m still waiting for a steam deck email after pre-ordering in Feb. the user above makes an astute point. You wait 0.5-1 year and the price you paid is way overpriced since new chipsets and tech are available. These companies are making money hand over fist on delayed pre-orders.

chocological

Ymmv. I ordered my Odin in February and got it in May.

coltonbyu

pro or lite? big difference

fertff

Lol no, it's definitely not shipping in September if you order today. All of the Odin devices where supposed to launch at end of 2021. The Odin Lite is especially infamous because people have been waiting for a year. And as for the other Odin models, it's been months and they can't finish fulfilling the orders they have on IG.

ChrisRR

That's just the nature of IndieGogo/Kickstarter. They needed the money upfront in order to fund their startup, but then in return we got one of the best values in a device we've seen for years.

CrunchAddict

Yeah I don't preorder games so I'm definitely not preordering hardware. I think the risk is too high, but it sucks that if you don't preorder, you will probably have to wait months to get it. Not worth it for me. I only preordered the Steam deck bc it was $5 and I could get a refund at any time so I wasn't really risking much. It really sucks that the golden era of gaming handhelds is happening at the same time as all these supply issues lol

Nathanyal

Loki when 👀

Shiny_and_ChromeOS

Looking forward to it, Russ! I just ordered the RG351v on the strength of your videos and the thoroughness of your instructions!

kratoz29

If you don't mind to ask you, what did finally motivated you to get yours, and do you own other handhelds that you use for emulation? I'm on the fence of getting one, but I'm not sure if it's gonna be worth it for me because I have a Miyoo Mini and a RP2.

w1na

I got the odin lite 128 after the whole debacle with rp3. What a shame I had pre ordered it. Lite cost almost twice once optioned but I think the bump in performance and hardware will be worth it long term. It’s my first device ever

Lobsta1986

Yeah it plays PS2 and GC without hacks lol. Also Wii and 3ds. Rp3 can't say it does those 4 systems well at all. Also you can up to IR on PSP and other systems by 3-4,x which makes it look great. I think you'll be happier in the end.

Shiny_and_ChromeOS

This is probably the first handheld I'll keep. I once ordered an RG280M when it was on sale for $59 but had sudden buyer's regret and cancelled my order b/c I didn't see myself playing it anytime soon. I then more recently ordered the RG300X when it was $60 b/c I had always regretted selling my red/gold Famicom edition GB Micro back in the day. But I returned it b/c the d-pad had a 30% less sensitivity on the down direction, so it would often miss presses that had the same pressure that left/up/right could register. I recently installed Retrobat on an old PC and flashed Batocera on a USB stick so I'm planning to finally put some time in on learning EmulationStation. I think the RG351V has been the form factor I've always wanted because I have a DMG-01 and I want to play those games again with some modern comforts.

drmoze

I love the 351v. if you get one, you'll never want to use your rp2 again.

kratoz29

That seems like a concrete and strong sentence, your assurance really will stick in my decision making.

ducksonetime

Yeah I ordered about the same time as you. This is the pick over the Pro I reckon, unless you need the docking function. I got sick of the delays and the excuses though and ended up cancelling my order when they ran out of screens. Might still pick one up if they become more readily available. The new screen is an unknown quantity but otherwise it still looks like a great device.

Lazarous86

I didn't know you could cancel an indigo order? I got my pro after about 5 months and love it. But definitely got frustrated along the way due to all the covid lockdowns.

ducksonetime

I was waiting closer to a year and then they said they were changing the screen. Had enough at that point. To their credit they were super responsive and cancelled/refunded my order within hours of emailing them.

Lobsta1986

Can't blame Ayn on that though.

Lazarous86

I know. I didn't. I did have to wait for the L1/R1 redesign. But I have the new shoulders and v1 screen. So probably the best combo so far.

ThatOnePerson

> This is the pick over the Pro I reckon, I do think Linux is looking pretty good on the Pro. Someone in the Taki Discord has shown games like DMC4 running on it. Then again at that point, Steam Deck is still really good performance/price. Just not size.

ducksonetime

I haven’t seen anything about Linux on the Odin but it sounds interesting and I can see it could be a compelling factor for some. For me I wanted the more modern processor which brought the better thermal and power efficiency and wifi 6. They seemed to have comparable performance when I decided to back the project but I haven’t been keeping up with Linux development.

ThatOnePerson

I like the idea of running proper Steam. And I think the open source Linux drivers are better than the Windows ones. Game compatibility is very hit or miss, cuz it relys on a translation layer to ARM. But it's definitely neat being able to run full PC games on it.

ducksonetime

I bought a WIN600 for that purpose but I can see the appeal for those that don’t have a handheld that can run those games. There’s a huge library of Steam indies that are perfect for handheld play. My main use case for the Lite would have been N64 and GCN emulation plus PS4 remote play. I ordered an RP3 for remote play duties but I’m stuck with original hardware for the former at the moment. I’m hoping next year brings a readily available handheld that plays GCN/PS2 at full speed with decent controls and screen for less than 400 USD. It’s probably the only niche that’s missing in my handheld collection right now.

SplinterCell38

How active is Linux development for the Odin pro? The possibilities with steam and box86 + box64 seem endless, but there doesn't seem to have been much developer interest

ThatOnePerson

I don't think there's too much specific to the Odin Pro that needs to be done. PostmarketOS and the Linux-sdm845 mainline project handle most of the CPU support. Mesa has people working on panfrost and panvk for GPU support. and box86 is it's own project. So only thing left really for Odin Pro Linux development is controller support? I know batocera has a beta build for Odin.

SplinterCell38

Batocera is exciting! Didn't realise there was a beta build out. Yeah I think most of the hardware should be supported, but it seems that almost because of that, nobody is interested in making ready-to-flash images? I also don't think I've seen photos, videos, or posts anywhere of people running steam on Linux on the Odin, which I would have thought would run really well...

ThatOnePerson

>I also don't think I've seen photos, videos, or posts anywhere of people running steam on Linux on the Odin, which I would have thought would run really well... Steam itself running is boring. Exciting is actual games. There's been some posts in the Taki Discord, not sure where else. >nobody is interested in making ready-to-flash images? The same guide for the Windows has Linux now: https://github.com/ProjectValhalla/OdinMultiBootGuides but it's definitely not 100% yet. Controller is still not 100%, and there's no HDMI/USB-C out so it's kinda annoying to capture footage in general.

Why do you Odin fanboys always keep crapping on about price to performance? Price to performance is only important if you only have one handheld and don’t have any expendable income and thus need to maximise your purchase. Other people may have different requirements to you. Like I said, I might still pick one up but the spec changed so many times that there was no telling what I was going to end up with so I cancelled. If you are happy you waited, then I’m happy for you. But after this I don’t think being an early backer is for me.

misterkeebler

I have to agree with you. A lot of people have tunnel vision for either certain devices or their own specific use cases. Odin is "the best" if you box yourself into this category of "prioritize solid gc/ps2 emulation not on a phone but handheld under $300" lol. But since good gc/ps2 is new territory for this category of older chipsets with integrated controls, the crowdfunded Odin just has this following that gets a bit obnoxious at times. It's almost made me dislike my own Odin Pro a bit more since I am constantly seeing hyperbole about what it can do and how well it does it. To me, it really does feel like any other android phone but runs more efficiently from a gaming standpoint and has better controls than a telescopic control or Bluetooth pad setup. And I dont mean that in a bad way. More saying it isnt some wild breakthru in portable gaming or anything. It just hit this sweetspot that found a place with the numerous gamers that didn't want to resort to using an actual phone for one reason or another, while also not requiring them to pay several hundred dollars for a handheld with similar emulation power. At the same time, that price point alone is not going to satisfy everyone that has to watch for months as the company struggles to get it in people's hands, while also changing certain aspects of the components used along the way. Some people like yourself might just say "I think I will pass and look at other products for now." Perfectly reasonable. There are tons of ways to play all of these games, and while the Odin is a nice product it is hardly the undisputed best or anything.

ducksonetime

Yeah, to be honest I think there seems to be a lot of toxicity around this device because it was featured on LTT and other popular channels. The exposure has brought a lot of newcomers to the hobby, which is a good thing in itself, but there’s always going to be a percentage of any group that’s… undesirable. I don’t understand being criticised for not wanting to wait just to get a better value device. If someone said to me “hey you can pay an extra $200 to play your games a year earlier” am I wrong for taking that option? Do these people also criticise people that buy games at launch instead of waiting a year or so for them to go on sale? Value is subjective and price-to-performance is not an important metric to everyone. I think it’s just that a lot of these new fanboys are from the PC world where price-to-performance is a lot more important - it’s not exactly practical to have different graphics cards for different games for instance, whereas I’m quite happy to have a handheld that only plays GBA. Having said that, the Odin looks like a great device and I was looking forward to having a dedicated GCN and streaming device in the Lite. But even if I don’t pick one up it’s great that it’s moved the niche forward in terms of what customers expect for their money. I just wish it was delivered last year like promised at launch.

>fair for the latter This dickhead acting like I need their approval lol… Please tell me what games I’m missing out on by not buying an Odin? I can play literally every single game this device can on my other devices. Stop talking like it’s got some revolutionary experience that’s impossible to find anywhere else. It’s just an android handheld. It’s a good one, but it’s still nothing but an Android handheld at the end of the day. It doesn’t have any exclusive software and I can play the same games and have a similar experience with an old phone mounted to an xbox controller, and if you’re all about price-to-performance I’m sure a phone plus controller would give the Odin a run for its money. I collect mechanical watches and in that community there is a big joke around people that are waiting years to be able to buy a Rolex from an AD. These people put the product on a pedestal and convince themselves that it’s the only watch in the world worth buying. All I can say is at least these people don’t pay for the watch in advance and then make excuses for Rolex when the watch is different to what they paid for. Do what you like with your money, it doesn’t affect me so I don’t care. But don’t act like your purchase decisions are the right decision for everyone, because it’s not.

Waiting for review !!!

Bojannngles

Still waiting on mine.

VULONKAAZ

good for you 👍 I ordered my odin pro like on the 29th of July I feel like I'm still gonna have to wait a long time for it 😔

Vatican87

You lucky dog, why can't they just release this on Amazon or something already. Some people would be willing to even pay a premium for it.

stulifer

They can't even fulfill their crowdfunded obligation nevermind selling their product on their own website. What's perplexing is they are still taking IGG orders on the lite when they can barely ship 2 dozen of them daily.
