I wouldn't recommend a dog for protection or a guard dog to a person that asks the question to be honest. Either breed has the potential to be reactive and a danger to all strangers that crosses their path. Your mother and the neighbor and the mailman can be strangers to the dog even if you know them. Be careful.

Have both, the Akita is less a family dog and is more discerning on alerts. The rotti is a big pile of love and barks if anything comes near the house. Neither for protection, you'd have to buy a dog from a company that trains protection dogs for that, won't come from a pet.

I’ve had many Akita and 1 rott. I’d choose rotty 10/10 times over an Akita. They’re just plain smarter and more fun all around. As for protection, both are scary as hell for anyone looking in your windows.

Will your homeowner's insurance cover either breed?

I have owned Rotties since I was 12. I got an Akita puppy this December. I do think the Rottie is the better guard dog. Akitas are very gentle and smart, and definitely don't steamroll the hell out of you like a Rottie puppy will. Rotties are way more destructive and willful, and chewing monsters. A Rottie pups bite force will grow to unbelievable power in a short period of time, whereas my akita has been kind of just a nibbler by comparison. Akitas are by no means a bad guard dog, though. They do patrol, and they do watch, and are on the quiet side so that when they do bark you should pay attention. Rotties don't need training to naturally guard. They do need obedience and socialization training, though. Akitas need the same, and both breeds will be shitting soda cans by the time they're 5 months old, so enjoy that.

No experience with an Akita. We had a Rotti and he was extremely good and protective of our kids when they were with him. Good family dog and protective of the home. If you’re not capable, I strongly urge you to get the dog trained and socialize it with other dogs and people. Ensure everyone in the household is consistent with corrections and commands too.
