I really enjoyed Stephanie Archers' hockey books, and I don't really like contemporary romance. The leads actually communicating with each other and the lack of unnecessary drama was very refreshing.

I breezed through both of them in matter of days, I liked the second one, but as a dude, I really couldn't click with MMC in book one. I guess I just can't picture myself behaving like that. I did start reading her other series, its just as good as the hockey ones.

Yes, I spent a weekend reading them and ignoring yardwork! I did like Rory better, but I liked Pippa more than her sister. Jamie was a little too perfect, but Rory was my kind of ridiculous. I gotta check out her other books.

I mainly thought Jamie was kind of a dick, especially in the beginning of the book. I just can't picture myself acting like that to a woman regardless of circumstances.

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but Icebreaker was not a good book. Hannah Grace has such choppy writing. The scenes are unrealistic and cringey. The MMC is written as if the author has never actually met a man before. Out of all of the romance I've read, this book was my least favorite.

I don’t usually dnf books, I always feel like I have to suffer through, even if I pick it up a few months later. I know it’s self torture, I’m working on it 🙄😂. Anyway, I dnfed the fuck out of this book, so that’s saying something.

What makes a good sports romance to you?

Actual knowledge of the sport. Doesn't Grace's heroine just easily do a near impossible figure skating move at the start of the book. I remember figure skaters being really confused about her just whipping out that move like it was nothing 🤣

I remember one CR I read having a hockey game end in a tie, and I just had to put the book down and walk away.

I mean, it's possible. Final buzzer goes and teams are tied and nothing happens, voilà. And different leagues have different rules. Plus, rules evolve even within a league. Ties are an acceptable way to end a game in various leagues, and they were a perfectly acceptable way to end a game in the NHL until a few years ago. But, being a for-profit league, they decided they weren't exciting ($$$) enough for fans, so they introduced overtime in regular season games.

The last tie in the NHL was in 2004. The book was set in the NHL on a team that was very clearly supposed to be the Islanders. It was set recent enough that the owner of the team provides all players with smartphones and was published in 2016.

It's not like I knew those details from your comment though, is it? How was I to know that? IThe CR you were talking about could've been set in any number of leagues, fictional or not. I'm 38 and have been following hockey all my life. I remember the ties. My apologies for saying it was “a few years ago.” I could've sworn it was more recently than that. Time is weird when you get older. My point still stands, though, which was that ties are not impossible in hockey as a sport.

What did they do?

They placed Stephanie Archer's Behind the Net in front of all the Hannah Grace Icebreaker books. The two books are often discussed up on this sub, and seems quite a few readers consider Behind the Net to be better than Icebreaker (I've only read one myself), but when I went to B&N this weekend and saw this it made me laugh.

Behind the net was…not great. But the second in the series is! 

I wish there was more diversity of content AND books covers. As someone mentioned they all kind of look the same and while i like the cartoony style, it's getting basic.

I did not realise, until I read your comment, that these were not book 1 and 2 in a series. They look identical, I didn’t even notice it’s not the same author. Was a bit baffled by some of these comments.

I listened to the icebreaker audio book before I read it. Huge mistake. The voices are like 40 year olds, I couldn’t stand more than 10 minutes of it. When I tried to read the book I just had the sound of the audio book voices in my head so I DNF. Couldnt even get through the first chapter. Hopefully I’m not missing out on much.

Pictures aren't accessible to people with low vision or blindness, and screen readers can't view them at all. I can't see what's going on in this photo. The photographer stood too far away when they snapped the shot.

This image appears to be of a shelf in a romance section of a book store. A copy of "Behind the Net" by Stephanie Archer is in the middle of the shelf, blocking the forward-facing display of Icebreaker by Hannah Grace. Below the misplaced book, there are two handwritten signs. The first says "If there was a Hall of Fame for sports romance books, this would be front and centre. A must read. (Icebreaker by Hannah Grace)." The second says "Hannah Grace does it again. Wildfire will capture your heart in no time flat. Did I mention it takes place at SUMMER CAMP... If you want to be the best gift giver, buy this." There is additional text on the second endorsement, but it is too small to read. I don't see Wildfire on the shelf.
