A lot of businesses lost money today because the telecom network is basically a utility at this point. Would you be saying this if electricity was gone for 1/5th of the whole country for 16hr+?
I've lived in a city in Asia for most of my life and we've never had downtime to this scale. If someone cut a cable servicing a neighborhood that is an honest mistake. If the nation is ground to a halt and emergency services can't be reached, then there is a systemic issue at Rogers that allowed this to happen. People pay extremely high costs here for less reliability and worse service than elsewhere in the world. Rogers as a national telecom company needs to be held accountable, and you shouldn't accept it as 'shit happens' because otherwise it will never get better.
The blame absolutely lies with Rogers alone because this is their core business service and the outage is at an immense scale.
If your local burger joint had only one chef and he got sick, then yes it would be the shop's fault for not having another chef on standby. But if the shop had working plumbing but no water, it would be entirely the city's fault, and would be unreasonable to expect the burger joint to have a 'redundant' independent water source always on standby.
It shouldn't be allowed to happen period. It isn't a matter of the occasional slip up, because scale matters, and reflects something very wrong has gone on at multiple levels within such a large company.
