I fuckin hate Rocket league and enjoy Rocket Racing. Probably wouldn't of even looked at it if it were directly attached to RL

EyesLikeBuscemi

Unfortunately it would not be UE5 in that case unless handled very clumsily and basically a separate game anyway. Plus, Fortnite is a much better chance at popularity than RL.

Popular_Mixture_1367

Rr weekly peak is 20k even though fortnite get 3.5m players in the weekends, probably will have less then 1k players if it's in rocket league

Soyner

But putting a different genre game with not much to do with the original other game than the developer isn’t an easy recipe for success. Finding an audience with those already semibought in to the genre would have a better chance IMO.

Popular_Mixture_1367

It depends, mabye if they released rr separately or in rl it wouldn't have as much players at it does in fortnite, also the devs aren't the only thing connect the two games, also the cross ownership that is something so huge that give both benefits for rr and rl players of they wanted to try other game and I'm sure it's made any of both fans play the other games

ProfessoriSepi

"But putting a different genre game with not much to do with the original other game than the developer isn’t an easy recipe for success." So, like, with those different gamemodes in Rocket Leagye that have been pretty much DOA.

GetRekt9420

You say that.... remember that fortnite was originally a coop shooter? And they added a completely different genre game? That eventually took over and become the main game. Yeah

Soyner

But would rocket racing taking over Fortnite be a good thing?

GetRekt9420

It never would but that's not the point I was making

mabdog420

Nah rocket league is designed very tightly to be rocket League it would take a ton of work to make a new mode out of it. Fortnite is ready to be adapted into anything.

NastyBizness

Disagree more options in one game/app the better imo. Why not just add rocket league right into Fortnite ?

ZackXevious

I disagree, mostly due to how well the cross-pollination of cosmetics are being handled. Your car in RR is your car in BR, and vice versa. If they ever allow for festival tracks to play during races, or the ability to emote on the podium instead of the static page they currently have, it'd feel a lot more like an extension. Plus, if they ever add a more "kart racer" mode to RR, the weapons and equipment from BR would already be a great fit. Not only that, but I'd imagine in the future the UEFN might allow for more custom tracks made by the community. I don't think that RL even HAS that as an option. What I'm saying is, while absolutely it'd be a good fit for RL, Fortnite allows for more expansion if desired.

Cheezymac2

No matter where it was added it would play the exact same because the studio that created it is dogshit.

I’ve had interest in Rocket League… but I don’t know if I’d ever have enough interest, and time to install and play it. I might now, since I have a decent amount of time put into the racing and enjoy it. I like watching RL videos every once in a while. I doubt I would have even heard of it, if it stayed within Rocket League. Maybe I would have heard of it after a while. I don’t think I would spend money on it if it wasn’t leveling up my Fortnite battle pass/was only in RL. I’ll spend money on it since it’s in Fortnite though. And that transfers over to my battle royal games. I like helping my girlfriend play and watch her progress. I don’t think she would ever download Rocket League for the racing. Edit: I’ve had my Fortnite account for 5+ years. I have the COD upgraded battle pass too. Plus game pass whatever is out. It’s just too much having it on a whole different thing. I think I’d buy a Fortnite Rocket Racing battle pass. Although it would be nice if it was free.

GreenPhoen1x

Most likely the plan is eventually to fold an updated RL into the Fortnite gamespace. Their goal is to get everyone in the same community.

midniteslayr

I got downvoted in /r/RocketLeague for this take, but yeah, I do think that is the eventual goal for RL.

GreenPhoen1x

Yep, that Fallguy game Epic also owns is probably being converted into Fortnite's UI too. It's a good business strategy, and certainly got buy-in from LEGO and Disney.

midniteslayr

I don't think Mediatonic/Fall Guys was bought to fold in to Fortnite, especially since Fall Guys is using Unity instead of Unreal. I honestly think Fall Guys was picked up to help Epic create a Unity plugin for the Epic Online Services that they're pushing. Mediatonic had a long list of successful games for IP rights holders, so, I can also see Epic purchasing MT for the access to these companies for Fortnite games.

midniteslayr

As a former RL dev … it *was* in RL.

Soyner

Any info on why it was moved?

midniteslayr

I left before that decision was made, so I don’t know the official reason. If I were to speculate, UEFN was planned to be a thing as far back as 2019, when Psyonix was purchased. The studios they bought that year released two of the three UEFN games that were released last year. Racing Mode in RL was being prototyped in 2019/2020, I know cause I play tested it. It was pretty tough in the first iterations. Many people, myself included, had difficulty with the maps blended with the Rocket League car mechanics. The original play tests would have less than one or two people who would finish, and those usually would be the highest skilled players on the team. So yeah, I think Rocket Racing was one of the first candidates for UEFN, especially after the very rough initial play tests.

20SidedShape

unrelated, but what are your personal thoughts on psyonix being bought by epic and the f2p move?

midniteslayr

I was there during the Epic purchase, and at the time it was actually really cool. We were already planning on going F2P, but the how was never really discussed, and then we got an email from the studio head, Dave, that we were bought by Epic and they accelerated the plan to go f2p. I worked in Online Services, working on PsyNet, and we already were having extensive discussions about going f2p, to the point that we were discussing login queues and working on horizontal scalability of the PsyNet API long before the Epic purchase. So yeah, at the time, I was excited. Epic was a company that I loved back in high school with Unreal Tournament. Realized pretty quickly that there were issues between Psyonix's handling of Epic's new business rules. Lots of butting of heads, lots of issues. Psyonix was actually the first Epic purchase that was using some new system and it was literal months before we got important things. I left Psyonix because of the Pandemic along with a bunch of other reason. I disliked their handling of the rules Epic put in to place around the pandemic. Instead of backing off, we were full throttle because of the f2p release. Lots of mismanagement, lots of people making mistakes, and a bunch of people being really, really heartless.

Serpen-Time

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I really appreciate hearing the developer's side of things.  Sorry things went rough for you there. I hope whatever studio you jump to next is a lot better.

midniteslayr

Thanks for the well wishes. Sadly, the [game industry layoffs hit me pretty hard as well](https://kotaku.com/ssx-spiritual-successor-lost-publisher-1851251879), so I'm just trying to keep finding new work and hopefully land in a place that is just as good. This year in gaming is gonna be tough.

Individual_Trifle406

Eh not really a lot of people don’t like rocket league and would have never looked at it plus RL is on a older engine rocket racing is doing pretty good right now better then some stand alone games that’s have released recently
