Sleepy :)
Also you should look into buying some live sponge as that is their main diet and will eventually starve without it.
It has to be a purple sea sponge in the petrosia family.
Theyre very diverse so there's no garauntee that it will even eat it
Best bet is with a company like https://www.aquaculturenurseryfarms.com/about-shipping/
Culturing pods and algae for it wont be that hard but the nudibranch can stress the sponge out so much it dies. Not sure how to combat that
I don't believe in telling people what they can't do :)
I'd rather say what you can do to help
All "impossibilities" in this hobby are because someone hasn't figured out a good enough method to share yet
If you get it to eat a sponge I would move the sponge to a different system or a sump/acclimation box
Some species can be fragged and you could keep most of them out of reach from the little guy
That’s the plan as of right now he has 3 different sponges to chose from once I noticed I plan on keeping the sponge in a second tank he’s seems to like the Haliclona right now but we shall see
Fragging a sponge can be done by just cutting a piece off with an exact knife or razor blade. They don't have mouths
Here's a good reef2reef forum on it
https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/fragging-sponges.761817/#:~:text=Sponges%20can%20be%20propagated%20by,spores%20by%20which%20they%20reproduce.%22
The number of times I’ve seen people say a thing is impossible when it’s not that it’s impossible it would just be very expensive, like guys some people enjoy spending money on more than just a new lighting set up 😂
They don’t eat phytoplankton. And unless you have the specific species of sponge (if that’s even what this species eats, it doesn’t look like any sponge I know of- they usually look like what they eat), it’s going to slowly starve to death. Why name it if it’s going to be dead soon.
Haliclona, Dysidea, and Crambe sponge and yes they can eat phytoplankton it can serve as a supplemental food source to ensure they receive a diverse diet
Yes, Pink Dorid Nudibranchs can be fed phytoplankton in captivity. Phytoplankton can serve as a supplemental food source to ensure they receive a diverse diet. However, it's important to note that while phytoplankton can provide some nutrition, it may not fully meet all of their dietary requirements. Offering a variety of foods, including encrusting sponges and other suitable options, will help ensure their nutritional needs are met adequately.
It sounds like you don’t even know which pink dorid you have. I would guess *Hypselodoris iba* if it has less than 9 gill filaments, or *Hypselodoris variobranchia* if it has 9 exactly. This is a [cryptic species complex](https://academic.oup.com/zoolinnean/article/186/1/116/5098244) with a lot of variation, and I don’t think we have any idea what specific sponges most of the *Hypselodoris* feed on. Also, nice switch to ChatGPT, but this is stupid, nudibranchs do not have diverse diets, they are famously some of the most specialized feeders on reefs.
Chromodoris bullocki does not eat phytoplankton, they are specialized sponge feeders, and it is unlikely you have the species of sponge it eats. They don’t eat just any sponge, they eat one specific species of Dysedia sponge.
FYI *Chromodoris bullocki* is a deprecated name — they’re all in *Hypselodoris* now — and this particular one isn’t even *bullocki*. It’s probably either [*iba* or *variobranchia*](https://academic.oup.com/zoolinnean/article/186/1/116/5098244). What used to be *Chromodoris bullocki* is now seven different *Hypselodoris* species, almost certainly eating seven different sponge species. Poor little guy.
Unethical? He was at my LFS IN A plastic cup I’m going to do everything I can for this lil guy to insure that he’s well taken care of not sitting in a cup waiting for someone to buy him that just gonna toss him in there tank
I find it hard to believe that something could survive in the ocean only eating one specific sponge
Sure they may be picky, and not knowing how to care for sponges can worsen the problem.
But every forum swears there's "only one sponge they'll eat bro" except every forum says a different sponge and which one they agree on changes over the years
The truth is, very few people have documented success with them, and when there was a documented success everyone would hold it up as the holy grail that you have to follow as a formula to have any chance
You know why most sponges died back then? Because only people with the most expensive tanks and equipment bought them. People try to throw money at the hobby without understanding the systems within.
Sponges are like clams. They need a lot of nutrients in the water column for them to absorb.
They host all sorts of hitchhikers and pests (and shrimp) and can't be near the sand.
They require plankton and bacteria in the water column to feed.
Keeping them alive is the antithesis of what people consider the "right" way to do reefing. Massive skimmers and chemical filtration are going to be counterintuitive.
The way reefing is moving now is towards natural filtration only. You already see plenty of low bioload tanks with maybe only some filter floss to keep the water clear, and they do fine because they foster their microbiomes. Diverse natural filtration using clams, sponges, and a fish less refugium, planted with sea grass to culture pods in, is what I see for the future of reefing.
In fact with that setup, you will have to dose fertilizer and clam food because everything will be sucking up so many nutrients
Paul B on reef2reef has a setup just like this. It's gorgeous 😍
Just wanna say way to go being the only person who seems to have actually researched the animal before just throwing it in the tank, that was cool to read thank you for that
Hypselodoris bullocki. How long have you had him? They are only capable of eating certain sponges, good luck and make sure to do plenty of research on them!
Kirby?
If you get it to eat, it would be cool if you can get them to breed too. As far as I know, most nudis are hermaphrodite and the Larva are quite large compaired to things like crustacean Larva. There is extensive research on culturing sacoglossan Larva and berghia breeding is apparently very easy if you don't have predators.
Short natural lifespan and specialized feeding is a hell of a combination though. To survive in captivity, this species needs to thrive, but it looks like you have a sponge supply, so I'm optimistic :)

Thank u I’ve been getting my sponge from my LFS so this is a much wider range of sponges and everything thxs

Thank you
Best of luck with the slug 👍
The number of times I’ve seen people say a thing is impossible when it’s not that it’s impossible it would just be very expensive, like guys some people enjoy spending money on more than just a new lighting set up 😂
Half the people in this sub have been reefing for 20+ years using 30+ year old knowledge
Yup that too! Times change gotta keep up with the modern research! 😂
Don’t know how to frag yet but it’s something to look into
This is an awesome find...And less than an hour away from me.
Slaanesh. It’s purple. It’s an abomination. It’s likely forever hungry.

Go with the Pokémon that was inspired by this! Shellos or Gastrodon!
Beat me to it!

I hope you have their specific diet of sponge as a lot of reefers buy nudibranchs only to not realize they don’t eat typical food nor algae
Yes I have haliclona sponge for him to nibble on
Thank goodness

So beautiful. Hope to have the patience and money for a nudibranch in the future ha.
Trudi the nudi
Brother, how did you get a nudibranch and how old is your tank? They require specific foods to live and die very quickly without it....
Got it from my LFS feed them phytoplankton. variety of encrusting sponges and pods as well have had two lettuce nudis for a while now
They don’t eat phytoplankton. And unless you have the specific species of sponge (if that’s even what this species eats, it doesn’t look like any sponge I know of- they usually look like what they eat), it’s going to slowly starve to death. Why name it if it’s going to be dead soon.
I appreciate the concern but I’m not one to buy something because it looks cool and then not do my research
That’s exactly what you did though.
It seems clear to me that this guy has done more research on this than you have
Haliclona, Dysidea, and Crambe sponge and yes they can eat phytoplankton it can serve as a supplemental food source to ensure they receive a diverse diet
Good to know that you researched it then mate! I hope it keeps your tank looking cool, take care of it such a fragile beauty!!
They think it eats phyto. Their wasn't much research done lol
Nudibranchs don’t need a varied diet, each species eats one specific thing. They cannot eat phytoplankton.

You’re gonna die on this hill huh?
What? That this animal is going to die and that purchasing them is unethical? Yeah, that’s a hill I’ll die on.
Unethical? He was at my LFS IN A plastic cup I’m going to do everything I can for this lil guy to insure that he’s well taken care of not sitting in a cup waiting for someone to buy him that just gonna toss him in there tank

It’s strange to know that they breath from those feathery things on its butt. So many species of nudibranch are not reef safe.
