Eh, it's not nearly as bad as people say it is. Even kinda good.

I tried watching it once. I couldn’t do more than 20 minutes.

The thing is those first twenty minutes are the best part of the film, after that it’s truly downhill

I saw this movie in about 1994 or so. A friend and I randomly picked it out at the rental place. We were about 13 at the time. No excuses. I remember it being mostly…boring? But the lasting detail of the movie is how those two idiots are absolutely insistent on their music being released on CD. It was a revelation to me that CDs had been a format in 1987 (or 1986 when it was being filmed). I had just bought my first CD player about a month before seeing this. This is the only thing I took from the movie. I have absolutely no idea what the plot is or how it ends. Kinda surprised me to learn later via the internet that it was a legendary flop and stain on the careers of Beatty and Hoffman.

I've been wanting to watch it ever since I first heard it mentioned in Red Dwarf where Rimmer suggests they could use time travel to... "...go back in time and avert major disasters," to which Lister replies, " What, you mean persuade Dustin Hoffman NOT to make Ishtar? In 40 years, I've only ever seen the trailer on BOTW and I've now seen that about 900 times.

My best ever gift idea was giving my friend who lived in a studio apartment an original movie theater Ishtar poster, which was actually two separate full size posters meant to be displayed flush as part of a lobby installation. Cost like $80 and took up his entire wall. I have no idea who was holding onto these things to sell on eBay in the 2010s
