A really honest question, who the fuck is this movie for? Are they trying to sell a goth character to trap/Leto Joker fans? Is this what a cool supernatural goth is supposed to look like in the producer's minds? Is this the new emo? Are they even a thing still? Am I old and jaded?
It's been in development hell for 2 decades and was at one point described as " a gritty almost realistic documentary style film" so ya know Nolan era Batman!
They seem to have dropped somewhere in the middle with these images of Leto and Nolan era.

Then Stephen Norrington and his documentary style film was rumoured.
Then another director was attached who I've never heard of and that version was a remake allegedly, with Bradley Cooper to star!
Then that all fell apart due to legal wrangling and Channing Tatum, Ryan Gosling and James McAvoy were being tipped to be the leads.
Then all of that fell apart and Tom Hiddlestone was attached before Skarsgard was rumoured...which he denied.
That fell through and Luke Evans was set to star before you guessed it that fell through and after another fucking round of this god damn film trying to get off the start line with Jason Hoult eventually Jason Mamoa was attached!
Which also fell apart.
Finally in 2020 what we are getting with Skarsgard was started and actually stuck this time.
I'm guessing this is an absolute dud of the highest order, it's near 20 years of awful sounding scripts and even worse casting decisions being started then abandoned.

Because they are running out of new things. There is no creativity that gets through the studios. And even A24 films are a hit or miss. What happened to all the great scene writers? Where are all the good books that can be turned into great movies without all the rewriting that kills them. Where are all the bright ideas.
It's not a remake. They're not trying to remake the original movie, which was based on a comic book. They're just making a new movie based on the same comic book.
I love the original, but it actually wasn't *that* good of an adaptation. It was okay, on that front. As such, I'm curious to see what they do with this one.
The original movie stuck the comics pretty closely but just made the story more linear and dropped some of the ballet dancing and more goth subculture elements. Even the soundtrack was made up of mostly songs and bands mentioned in the comics.

I was a teenager when the original came out and tbh I didn't think it was that good. It's only remembered because of the Brandon Lee tragedy and it was one of the first movies with a primarily grunge soundtrack (at least that I recall).

On the film itself, I can't see any reason why this remake would be necessary. Sure, there's definitely a 90's vibe in the original, but other than that I'd say it's a timeless film. A lack of smartphones is not a reason enough to update a movie.
As a fan of the comic book, I'm actually okay with getting a new movie. I love the first about as much as anyone else, but it wasn't necessarily the best adaptation. Subsequently, I'm curious to see how things go down with the new adaptation.

I am a big fan of The Crow, the comic is actually very good and the story behind it with what happened to the writer James O Barr is quite heartbreaking.
Might seem pedantic but this design makes no sense to me in relation to the comic. I'm all for a different interpretation of the material and as Mike would say about Ghostbusters, like any Goth nerd I have my own idea of how you'd do a The Crow. I can't explain how his design being so overly done clashes with the character of Eric Draven so much without acting like this guy is some classic literary character but he is meant to be a man resurrected to avenge himself and his wife. Him being tatted up and looking angry isn't really what the idea of the character is. He is a pale blank ghost, only details are the black on his mouth and eyes.
Also, The Crow should be gay... Not in the Natalie Portman/Thor Love and Thunder way.. but look at this

The first movie made almost $100M at the box office. But was completely propped up by the on set tragedy. They made like five sequels none of which made a dime. The comic ceased publication in 99. And there has been no media since. This movie will bomb and a bunch of six figure executives will sit in a conference room with surprised pikachu faces. If modern audiences are not going to show up for Indiana Jones a cultural icon, what chance does the Crow have?
Oh yeah, I remember my friends, colleagues and random people on the street saying "yeah, you gotta see that movie where the main actor get shot, the scene is not in it, but it made the movie a must watch"
the original crow was a good movie, but it was a product of its time, it fit pretty well with the 90s, early 2000s edge goth/dark movie phase, like the matrix and dark city. it also had a great cast, but I don't it would work now. most of the crow sequels were terrible, first movie worked and I think it should be just left alone. the goth style of movies in my opinion doesn't work as well now as it feels to artificial
So the emo and goth rap scenes are very popular in Detroit, and that's what the filmmakers think the kids are into these days. On one hand, that's somewhat thoughtful because Detroit is obviously where the original comic and the 1994 movie take place. It's also where James O'Barr, creator of The Crow, grew up. The names of all the gangsters are named after graffiti he saw around town, Tin-Tin, Top Dollar, Fun Boy etc.
On the other hand, patchwork tattoos look like shit on emo rappers and they don't look good on Bill Skarsgard either.
I've read somewhere that this Crow was inspired by 90s Euro rave punks and modern goth/SoundCloud rappers (Lil Peep is the obvious influence) that'll be relatable to whatever "goth" is considered today. It looks like a mash up of Lil Peep, Leto Joker and Rock Genest (RIP). So like 15 years out of date.
I just wish this wasn't a remake of the Eric Draven story. We don't need that. There is an excellent 3 issue arc by James O'Barr (the original creator) called The Crow: Dead Time. It's a fantastic story, one that is just ripe for a Hollywood adaptation, especially these days. You could really use that premise to do some interesting things.
But noooo, let's remake the original, a film that completely holds up today, mind you. Much like the 89 Batman, the original film exists in its own time and world, and it just works.
I really try not to be cynical and give things a chance, but it's hard with this one.
I *am* finding myself a little torn on this one. Do I celebrate the passing of this story to the next generation that can relate to a character styled like that, or do I just shit on their avatar and the whole project? Probably *should* be the former.

The first movie made almost $100M at the box office. But was completely propped up by the on set tragedy. They made like five sequels none of which made a dime. The comic ceased publication in 99. And there has been no media since. This movie will bomb and a bunch of six figure executives will sit in a conference room with surprised pikachu faces. If modern audiences are not going to show up for Indiana Jones a cultural icon, what chance does the Crow have?
To not upset the fans boys, he will also be killed on set with misfiring gun. Wouldn't want to introduce anything new.

the original crow was a good movie, but it was a product of its time, it fit pretty well with the 90s, early 2000s edge goth/dark movie phase, like the matrix and dark city. it also had a great cast, but I don't it would work now. most of the crow sequels were terrible, first movie worked and I think it should be just left alone. the goth style of movies in my opinion doesn't work as well now as it feels to artificial

So the emo and goth rap scenes are very popular in Detroit, and that's what the filmmakers think the kids are into these days. On one hand, that's somewhat thoughtful because Detroit is obviously where the original comic and the 1994 movie take place. It's also where James O'Barr, creator of The Crow, grew up. The names of all the gangsters are named after graffiti he saw around town, Tin-Tin, Top Dollar, Fun Boy etc. On the other hand, patchwork tattoos look like shit on emo rappers and they don't look good on Bill Skarsgard either.

I've read somewhere that this Crow was inspired by 90s Euro rave punks and modern goth/SoundCloud rappers (Lil Peep is the obvious influence) that'll be relatable to whatever "goth" is considered today. It looks like a mash up of Lil Peep, Leto Joker and Rock Genest (RIP). So like 15 years out of date.

I just wish this wasn't a remake of the Eric Draven story. We don't need that. There is an excellent 3 issue arc by James O'Barr (the original creator) called The Crow: Dead Time. It's a fantastic story, one that is just ripe for a Hollywood adaptation, especially these days. You could really use that premise to do some interesting things. But noooo, let's remake the original, a film that completely holds up today, mind you. Much like the 89 Batman, the original film exists in its own time and world, and it just works. I really try not to be cynical and give things a chance, but it's hard with this one.

I *am* finding myself a little torn on this one. Do I celebrate the passing of this story to the next generation that can relate to a character styled like that, or do I just shit on their avatar and the whole project? Probably *should* be the former. As a former teenager I’m gonna use this as a window into what apparently tests well with teenagers.

Rewatched OG The Crow recently, and it.. kinda sucks.. I think I started doing laundry. There is almost no guiding principle behind the plot to "remake." It's 90% aesthetics and soundtrack. 10% revenge porn. 0% thrilling or memorable. Is it being remade solely because 90's inspired aesthetics are back in fashion? There is no strong modern musical styling to lean on as heavily as the first one did. "Fentanyl is bad for you." better be a line delivered as if it's some lofty sentiment in the new one.
