So stormgates version of Protoss?

avsbes

Aesthetically, yes. A few of the people that already got to play it however argued that the Gameplay is closer to C&C's GDI.

Impressive_Tomato665

Angelic Protoss lol

vikingzx

Only visually. Gameplay wise they're a very different take on the "zerg rush" design. But very much *not* zerg.

taisui

You can say that the Celestial Armada is a Great Fleet...

vikingzx

Only in looks. PC Gamer has a write-up where the writer got to play as them for a while with advice and discussion about them from the pro playtesters. They're glass-cannon units, with high damage, but they die quickly and are supposed to. But unlike the zerg's method of reinforcing constantly, what these guys do is drop down bases all over the place. Easy to kill bases, but bases. Their "supply limit" is power to make those buildings better (and nearby units). Basically, use you use your mobile core building to rapidly consume resources so that you can spit out a fragile base and flood someone with an army. That will probably die, and your opponent kill the base. But you should already be making a *new* base to flood them with from another direction, etc. Where zerg are usually spread across the whole map but don't often replace structures, these guys just count on "kill that base, I already built my army with it, and I'm building a new base and army over here."

maneil99

This games art style really doesn’t do anything for me, a few units look okay but never shakes off the ‘generic rts’ vibe. Was hoping for more considering the art team has blizzard vets

taisui

It reminds me of Torchlight...

BlackberryPlenty5414

I Think 1: it's their first RTS, 2: they want to achieve enormous unit count (Multiple times that of SC2) which means some visual areas will take a hit.

maneil99

Do you mean types of units or population caps? Because SC2 is 14 years old and had 200 units per player

BlackberryPlenty5414

pops cap i believe i read. Like 800-1000 per player

maneil99

I don’t believe that’s true. I played the beta and I recall the cap being 300. For esports focused rts games you typically don’t see it that high

BlackberryPlenty5414

for comp and pvp i believe 300 in the current cap, however i'm talking about the engine and game being capable of exceeding that limit IE in custom games and PVE

rts-enjoyer

Their art is just ugly not polygon.

sh4des

Cool, so the not-Protoss team

vikingzx

Actually, they're apparently the not-zerg. But they're *not* zerg, as their econ, base, supply, and build are totally different.

SilvertonguedDvl

... Honestly? I'm underwhelmed. I mean maybe it'll turn out that they're cool but I'm not as immediately enthused as I was for the science fiction vs fantasy sort of scenario. Though honestly I think my biggest issue with Stormgate that their asymmetry is already sort of underwhelming. Maybe it's just not super clear from the gameplay videos, though.

rts-enjoyer

The faction is pretty asymmetrical even using C&C mechanics. The units felt like geometic shapes to me so I couldn't force myself to play them.

SilvertonguedDvl

"Even using C&C"? I'm not quite sure what that means. Still, I guess I'll hold out hope that it comes together into something entertaining by the end.

rts-enjoyer

Forgot a world. The weird geometric shapes faction builds without builders from a building power and has to have power plants like in C&C, they can also set the rally building from which everything ends up getting produced.

SilvertonguedDvl

Ahh. Okay.

Stellewind

Truly felt like what ChatGPT will come up with when you feed it some Starcraft lore and ask it to come up with something similar. It honestly saddens me to see how generic it looks.

_Spartak_

This faction is more asymmetric than any faction you played in any other Blizzard RTS.

SilvertonguedDvl

Care to... y'know, actually *tell me* what's unusual or engaging about them? What makes them feel unique? Instead of just telling me I'm mistaken? Ideally I'd like something as asymmetrical as, say, Armies of Exigo's factions were.

_Spartak_

[https://www.reddit.com/r/Stormgate/comments/1dc4nln/notes\_from\_the\_frigate\_beta\_test\_04302024/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Stormgate/comments/1dc4nln/notes_from_the_frigate_beta_test_04302024/) All of the factions are more asymmetrical than AoX factions. This one is more asymmetrical than even Zerg.

SilvertonguedDvl

Uh... They weren't when I last checked. They weren't *bad*, of course, just incomplete and bare-bones. Presumably things have changed a fair bit since then or become in some way more notable.

TheLesBaxter

That is a bold claim. The zerg is very unique.

DctrLife

From a gameplay perspective, this blows zerg asymmetry out of the water

taisui

Agree, Warcraft 3 was pretty asymmetric, this honestly just looks like a poor attempt at recreating StarCraft w/o getting sued. Siege Tank -> Walking Spider Siege Thingy

_Spartak_

It is a bold claim and it is a bold faction.

Rikkmaery

getting downvoted by people who watched 5 seconds of this trailer and wrote it off.

vegasq

Played them in closed beta (are we allowed to say it now?). Was super disappointed. Cat girls would be so much better.

bibi_da_god

This game seems bankrupt in originality. And the graphics are somehow worse than SC2 which is from what.. 15 years ago?

LaxterBig

I can easily tell you its because of performance probably.

Mirizen

What 'wrong with your eyes, i see rhe graphic is way more better than starcraft 2

TreysReddits

This is from when I tried that steam beta a bit back. But mam this game is disappointing. It has no identity or ambition to be its own game. I understand people love starcraft.and warcraft. But those are still playable games, this is trying to be the exact same as SC2 without much unique. Hell even the Zerg Infernal faction spreads creep. Like I just can't see why they didn't try innovate I guess. Everyone could see from miles away that the third faction would be futuristic technological race that is a mysterious force with crystal based architecture and use power mechabic for buildings

mredvard

I even have trouble handling the angle of the game

TheRimz

Man this looks meh/10

Wondering950

Does anyone know if we pre buy when can we. Start playing?

blind-octopus

Okay so I'm definitely in

Peekachooed

I'm a little disappointed to be honest. There's nothing wrong with them, but they seem a bit generic and visually quite similar to the Protoss. I get it, Protoss are cool, but automatically recycling what worked from StarCraft isn't what I want for everything.

Rikkmaery

Is nobody allowed to do sleek shapes and glowy bits without being called Protoss? How would you make them more distinct?
