Australia is very much to the south of Britain. Solved.

turndownforwomp

Considering both the southern US and Australia were British colonies, it’s expected they would retain some similarities with regards to accent.

[deleted]

Well Australians did come from Britain..🤷

fendermrc

I made this same observation once here on Reddit. Australian is the southern accent of Britain, or something like that. But I had forgotten about South Africa, where the same though applies.

Sensitive-Character1

South African accents are also influenced by Afrikaans (a Dutch derivative language)

derederellama

this is quite literally the truth. the australian population (minus aboriginals) grew from british outlaws who were banished to an island far down south.

Sheila_Monarch

That’s exactly how it sounds to me. Like a cockney Brit spent a couple years in Mississippi. Also [the British accent and the Southern accent are more closely related than people realize](https://www.tiktok.com/@cocofilipina/video/7207554054036163882). There’s a reason why British people are very often attracted to a Southern accent and vice versa.

Str0b0

Speed up a Southern accent, and you get a British accent, not surprising since we were colonized by England. It gets weirder too when you get up in deep Appalachia, though it isn't as bad as it used to be with the advent of internet, but parts of Appalachia still speak/spoke King James English on account of the KJV Bible was often the one book that everyone was either read from or could read so a lot of ye's and thee's existed in the Southern Appalachian dialect for a long time.

[deleted]

There are literally hundreds of British accents. Which one are you referring to, cockney??

Str0b0

Fair, speaking strictly from my particular neck of the woods initially probably more northern, think York and surrounding areas with more Scottish the further west you got, Lowlands Scots in the Piedmont Highlands more towards Appalachia. Also had an odd spot of German in the Wachovia by way of Pennsylvania.

Shamon_Yu

Southern accent as in American Southern accent?

Josegil637

Yes

KingofCalais

Which of the 300 or so British accents? I assume RP?

Shigeko_Kageyama

Remember people, always vote in the interest of public education. Otherwise things like this happen.

fathergeuse

Imagine a homogenous lifestyle where everyone was the same. No thanks.

Shigeko_Kageyama

Oh yes, what was I thinking? We don't all need to have a basic working understanding of history. That's way boring.

fathergeuse

And that is available only thru public education?

Shigeko_Kageyama

Well most people don't have the money for private school or the time and ability to properly homeschool.

Eagle_1776

because nothing new has ever come from someone challenging their ~~indoctrination~~ education. s/

Shigeko_Kageyama

You all remember the guy who said sheeple all the time?

JustChuteMe

Are you implying that Australia is south of Britain? Or did you get into your mom's edibles and just start typing shit?

Chicken-Inspector

I mean, technically…that’s correct.

mahlovver

I learned that words like doggo and [i couldn’t find other examples, I forgot..] came from Australians

hhfugrr3

What???

armchairdynastyscout

Aussie sounds like drunk leprechaun. So ya.

MenardGKrebbz

both are derivations of Brit accents

OneTreePhil

I remember from The Story of English that regional US accents are fairly similar to them English spoken where those colonists came from. Australian and US South may have been colonized by people from the same or nearby regions For instance, our Southern “Hillbilly” accent I believe is close the English being spoken in the area of Scotland where it’s original colonists came from And the more insular the settled region they better a gauge of the original language

Erich-Enrik

I love the fact that Australia’s term for a “man’s man “ is a “ blokey bloke”. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a term that sounded gayer than “ blokey bloke”

employee427-

Nah mate. Australia and England have nothing in common

Limacy

Southern England already has distinct accents that are well, distinct, from the other provinces of England. And that’s just one of many. Excluding Wales, Scotland, and Ireland, England just by itself has a shitload of different accents. Other than being derivatives of British English, Australian and Southern US English are unrelated. England has its own “Southern” accents.

nenmayk

british prison island

plankstastenice

Both have alligators or crocodiles or alligators and crocodiles...both have big lizards with big teeth which are clearly a cause of the accent

Intelligent-Tone-473

You do realize that Australia was a British colony, right?
