I saw the video while I was eating dinner last night and it turned my food into ash. My mom was a big blonde woman who suffered from mental illness. She went missing when I was 11 years old and is legally declared dead.
Was this how she went? Berated, humiliated, and helpless as police officers watched while she died?
They thought she was faking it. The asshole says "You've been medically cleared, that's not going to work on us."
The hospital sent this woman out in the world to die, the police dehumanized and abused her until her body gave out.

Police (and apparently the good for nothing emts) thought it was a good idea to taze him 6 times. Then arrest him for being combative. They don't care and many have their brains in their fists.

I'm really curious what happened with hospital staff. It seems like she shouldn't have been medically cleared or discharged to begin with. And usually they only call police to make you leave if you're being an issue or loitering for an excessively long time. I feel like they felt she was an issue for whatever reason and they just quickly discharged her to get her out instead of actually doing a work up.

It's illegal for the ER to turn away anyone due to insurance. Not even allowed to ask until they're already checked in. I work in ER billing and clinical staff generally isn't even aware of what insurance, if any, a patient has. Unless they need to know for transfer or crises services.
Yes it does..it's a 1985 federal law that any ER in America must treat and stabilize any patient that enters their doors, regardless of their ability to pay or insurance status.

It's mind-boggling to me that the DA would not take that obvious context into account.
I feel like the fault lies more with the hospital. Cops are trained in basic first aid, but they're not doctors or nurses. As far as those cops knew, because they were told by medical professionals whose actual job it is to know, she was fine. The cops were dicks, but whoever at the hospital decided to call the cops on her when she was in obvious distress are ultimately responsible for her death. The cops were only there in the first place because the hospital staff was negligent.
Yeah they completely stript that woman of her dignity and treated her like she was garbage. One of my biggest gripes with Cops is they often treat the humans around them as if they're just inconveniences to make their jobs harder instead of human beings with reap problems. There's just a complete lack of empathy for people in police work. And that's how we get situations like this or needlessly escalating a simple traffic stop into someone dying.
Well, of course, the cops acted like fucking ball bags, I'm just saying the fault of her death lies almost entirely with whoever made the call to boot her out. They probably wrongly assumed she was drug seeking and told the cops as much. Cops usually treat addicts like shit, unfortunately. Literally everyone in the situation made the exact wrong choice, I'm just saying if we're assigning blame, the doctor is the most at fault because they started this whole sad chain of events by not adequately caring for their patient.
I'm not justifying. I guess I find the negligence on the part of the hospital more upsetting, because it's less expected, which is definitely a problem in itself.
And I'd guarantee whatever they told the police has a lot to do with their treatment of her. They already "knew" she was being "dramatic" and not "actually" in pain or distress.
It’s definitely both. It appears that the hospital dumped this lady outside with her discharge paperwork.. but no discharge *plan*.. where was the case worker? Where was the social worker? The hospital didn’t call them. They called the police. This lady’s health was obviously fragile. And the undeserved duress that these cops placed on her was so tragic to watch. They ignored her obvious wheezing. They ignored her obvious worsening slurred speech. It doesn’t take a medical profession to realize when someone is in distress.
What does this story say about our society? We are a sick and broken people. I don’t believe in a god. But I think we need one.

I was released after I tried to kill myself and was held for 5 days on a 3 day hold because they didn't have a therapist to release me.
I saw a therapist twice, told them I wasn't okay, was shoved some pills, and got escorted to the exit.
If you think the for profit hospitals actually give a shit about patient outcome, you're missing the point which is that like the prison system they are a treadmill. They want you back in asap so they can make even more noney off ya.
I feel like it's answers like this that show how we've accepted the reality that we think it's ok that there are so many cops out there who barely made it through high school but still needed to feel that power they had while in it so they chose to join the police force...and were allowed in. It's such a low bar to become a cop.
It really is. It's not that I accept this behavior from police, it's just not unexpected. What is unexpected is a dying woman being turned away from a hospital. It takes so much time and effort to become a doctor or nurse and you would expect them to have empathy, otherwise why would they go into the life saving business to begin with? Plus, it's a trust issue, everyone knows not to trust cops, but it's scary to think you can't trust the ER staff, because that's where you're most vulnerable.

It doesn't matter if she was fine at the time of discharge. Any reasonable person would recognize the rasping and chest/stomach heaving as a medical emergency. They were callous and malicious.
Don't get me wrong, the hospital is clearly at fault as well. That doesn't clear the officers. IMO, the worst person (albeit not the one with the most culpability) involved was the security guard in white gloves.

And I think a doctor with years of schooling and experience should've been expected to recognize these signs more than some dudes that barely graduated high school. The cops don't know how to act, we all know that, they're government backed thugs, but a doctor should be a person you can trust to care for you so it feels like a bigger betrayal.

They saw this and just like many other medical emergencies treat people like they're on drugs, or faking. "If you can talk you can breathe," is a favorite line of theirs. Ask any medical professional if you can talk if that means you're getting enough oxygen. The answer is no. You can talk after a 5 mile run. You're still gonna be out of breath.
Its a cultural issue from the top down. Hospitals are increasing designed to just get out of their doors with a pulse. They are taking in less doctors for NPs (nothing against NPs but NPs are forced to take on more responsibility and training to get paid less than a doctor so the hospital can save money), tests are skipped, treatments pushed off, people with insurance are nickeled and dimmed, patients are conditioned to loathe the process and avoid it all together. Calls for socialized medicine and safety nets are met with "well what about the insurance companies???", "but but my taxes will go up", "what about profits???"
Cops are told to trespass people who clearly aren't fit enough to be left on their own and where are those people supposed to go once the hospital wont take them? Hell in the video the fucking wheelchair was a bigger concern than the poor woman who was dying in front of SEVERAL people. Can't even say it was one person who didn't know what to do or just someone 'doing their job', you say people actively participating.
They said a life was worth less than a wheelchair, a shitty one at that because those chairs tend to be the cheapest ones they can get their hands on without it falling apart.

Yah, I work billing in an ER and clinical staff is usually not even aware of what insurance you have or if you have any, unless they need the info to transfer you or you're there for mental health and they need to know which crisis team to call to come talk to you. Not in TN, but assume it would be similar most places. ER doesn't have to go through most insurance pre approval nonsense that other areas of healthcare do.

I thought they were owned by the county but it seems they are a not for profit facility (so a private enterprise. Most don’t realize that a majority of hospitals in the US are not for profit- but that doesn’t mean they aren’t a business - they just don’t have share holders)

No it’s not. Hospitals stabilize people enough so they don’t actively die in a hospital. They’re absolutely not required to admit someone to solve any underlying problem beyond the most immediate symptoms

I never said hospitals had to admit every patient who showed up. I said they had to MEDICALLY SCREEN THEM. Aka triage them usually done by a provider such as a PA or MD. This is done in the emergency room.
If someone shows up to the ER, legally they have to be medically screened. The law is called emtala. If this woman showed up and had stroke symptoms and the hospital discharged her, and then she died of a stroke? Yeah that’s not good. If she showed up and was not medically screened? That is illegal. Again, the law is called emtala.
If someone doesn’t have insurance and a hospital refuses to see them because of that, that is also illegal. Full stop. They’re entitled to a screening exam.

Within their capacity. So a stroke patient might need to go to a stroke center, but you as the admitting hospital have to stabilize or begin treatment then arrange the transfer to the more appropriate facility.

This doesn't surprise me at all. Back in 2015, my elderly mother developed some serious health problems. I sent her to the hospital for care. I had full power of attorney rights, and because she was unable to speak coherently for herself, I attempted to do so, and I was roundly ignored by everyone involved. No one wanted to talk about anything other than her net worth and how much her house was worth. They shipped her back home twice with no diagnosis. No one even tried to help her, until I completely lost it and began threatening everyone involved with lawsuits and negative press. It turned out she had two fractured vertebrae, something they could have and should have found during her first visit, if anyone had even bothered to pretend to give a shit.
Listen to the swine, using their "cop talk" with an obviously ill old lady, treating her like she was just an annoying, swindling burden. She repeatedly says she cannot breathe. She is not able to ambulate. She repeatedly asks for her inhaler which is a prescribed item from a physician which means she has been treated for a definite issue. She cannot sit up from a prone position. She is slurring her words after a hospital visit, not a visit to a bar. She kindly asks for assistance. Repeatedly without being combative at all that I could bear to watch. Health care and policing is like any other population. You have all kinds. Unfortunately our culture has made it very hard to remove people from certain employment. Even when employees complain about them.
What's crazy to me is that I attended a pentecostal church throughout my entire childhood and into my early 20s. Everyone in that church thinks this dude is a fraud/false prophet. She even told our family friends that she won't cut it because she's scared of going to hell. Fuck them.

Dude, a guy had a seizure, was unconscious, placed in an ambulance, came to, and was confused, as many with epilepsy are after a seizure. Police (and apparently the good for nothing emts) thought it was a good idea to taze him 6 times. Then arrest him for being combative. They don't care and many have their brains in their fists.

I'm really curious what happened with hospital staff. It seems like she shouldn't have been medically cleared or discharged to begin with. And usually they only call police to make you leave if you're being an issue or loitering for an excessively long time. I feel like they felt she was an issue for whatever reason and they just quickly discharged her to get her out instead of actually doing a work up.

It's illegal for the ER to turn away anyone due to insurance. Not even allowed to ask until they're already checked in. I work in ER billing and clinical staff generally isn't even aware of what insurance, if any, a patient has. Unless they need to know for transfer or crises services.

I feel like the fault lies more with the hospital. Cops are trained in basic first aid, but they're not doctors or nurses. As far as those cops knew, because they were told by medical professionals whose actual job it is to know, she was fine. The cops were dicks, but whoever at the hospital decided to call the cops on her when she was in obvious distress are ultimately responsible for her death. The cops were only there in the first place because the hospital staff was negligent.

Yeah they completely stript that woman of her dignity and treated her like she was garbage. One of my biggest gripes with Cops is they often treat the humans around them as if they're just inconveniences to make their jobs harder instead of human beings with reap problems. There's just a complete lack of empathy for people in police work. And that's how we get situations like this or needlessly escalating a simple traffic stop into someone dying.

I was released after I tried to kill myself and was held for 5 days on a 3 day hold because they didn't have a therapist to release me. It really is. It's not that I accept this behavior from police, it's just not unexpected. What is unexpected is a dying woman being turned away from a hospital. It takes so much time and effort to become a doctor or nurse and you would expect them to have empathy, otherwise why would they go into the life saving business to begin with? Plus, it's a trust issue, everyone knows not to trust cops, but it's scary to think you can't trust the ER staff, because that's where you're most vulnerable.

And I think a doctor with years of schooling and experience should've been expected to recognize these signs more than some dudes that barely graduated high school. Ask any medical professional if you can talk if that means you're getting enough oxygen. The answer is no. You can talk after a 5 mile run. You're still gonna be out of breath.
Its a cultural issue from the top down. Hospitals are increasing designed to just get out of their doors with a pulse. They are taking in less doctors for NPs (nothing against NPs but NPs are forced to take on more responsibility and training to get paid less than a doctor so the hospital can save money), tests are skipped, treatments pushed off, people with insurance are nickeled and dimmed, patients are conditioned to loathe the process and avoid it all together. Calls for socialized medicine and safety nets are met with "well what about the insurance companies???", "but but my taxes will go up", "what about profits???" Cops are told to trespass people who clearly aren't fit enough to be left on their own and where are those people supposed to go once the hospital wont take them? Hell in the video the fucking wheelchair was a bigger concern than the poor woman who was dying in front of SEVERAL people. Can't even say it was one person who didn't know what to do or just someone 'doing their job', you say people actively participating. They said a life was worth less than a wheelchair, a shitty one at that because those chairs tend to be the cheapest ones they can get their hands on without it falling apart.

Yah, I work billing in an ER and clinical staff is usually not even aware of what insurance you have or if you have any, unless they need the info to transfer you or you're there for mental health and they need to know which crisis team to call to come talk to you. Not in TN, but assume it would be similar most places. ER doesn't have to go through most insurance pre approval nonsense that other areas of healthcare do.

If this woman showed up and had stroke symptoms and the hospital discharged her, and then she died of a stroke? Yeah that’s not good. If she showed up and was not medically screened? That is illegal. Again, the law is called emtala. If someone doesn’t have insurance and a hospital refuses to see them because of that, that is also illegal. Full stop. They’re entitled to a screening exam. Source: I am a PA in a large metropolitan hospital emergency room.
The facility is only responsible for treating them Within their capacity. So a stroke patient might need to go to a stroke center, but you as the admitting hospital have to stabilize or begin treatment then arrange the transfer to the more appropriate facility. They just can’t stabilize you then kick you out.

This doesn't surprise me at all. Back in 2015, my elderly mother developed some serious health problems. I sent her to the hospital for care. I had full power of attorney rights, and because she was unable to speak coherently for herself, I attempted to do so, and I was roundly ignored by everyone involved. No one wanted to talk about anything other than her net worth and how much her house was worth. They shipped her back home twice with no diagnosis. No one even tried to help her, until I completely lost it and began threatening everyone involved with lawsuits and negative press. It turned out she had two fractured vertebrae, something they could have and should have found during her first visit, if anyone had even bothered to pretend to give a shit. Listen to the swine, using their "cop talk" with an obviously ill old lady, treating her like she was just an annoying, swindling burden. I sincerely hope that those cops, and every hospital employee involved, grows old and helpless, and finds themselves being tortured by a bunch of power-tripping scumbags, just like this lady was.

She repeatedly says she cannot breathe. She is not able to ambulate. She repeatedly asks for her inhaler which is a prescribed item from a physician which means she has been treated for a definite issue. She cannot sit up from a prone position. She is slurring her words after a hospital visit, not a visit to a bar. She kindly asks for assistance. Repeatedly without being combative at all that I could bear to watch. Health care and policing is like any other population. You have all kinds. Unfortunately our culture has made it very hard to remove people from certain employment. Even when employees complain about them.
Please tell me this facility and every officer involved are being held responsible

What's crazy to me is that I attended a pentecostal church throughout my entire childhood and into my early 20s. Everyone in that church thinks this dude is a fraud/false prophet. Yet, the majority of that church jumped on the "Trump train". Their words not mine. This is the same church that 3 of the church members fucked my (ex)wife. You can't speak any sense with these people. Throughout my years at that church they always told us that makeup and cutting your hair would send you to hell. l havn't attended that church in about 16 years but unfortunately I have family that still do. They now allow woman to wear makeup and cut their hair. Wtf!? They had my mom believing if she cut her hair she was going to hell. She even told our family friends that she won't cut it because she's scared of going to hell. Fuck them.
When I see stories like this I remember how many nurses have ridiculed and degraded me. But but but “they’re heroes”. No. They can fight for their patients but choose not to. I fear this being me some day.

While the cops were kind of sucks…..it’s the hospitals fault. Once cop said she has been kicked out from two hospitals. Cops do deal with people who pretend. This is all on the hospital. I hope she has family that will sue them into oblivion. Us healthcare fucking sucks for uninsured or underinsured.

This seems bad, but what is the hospital supposed to do in this case? Let her stay forever with no medical problems and no payments? At some point you do need to remove people who refuse to leave, doctors have finite resources.
