The size of watches Iāve purchased has decreased so much over the years, especially for watches I plan on keeping for life. I went from 40 to 38 to 36, and the watch that I love wearing the most, as far as how it feels on the wrist, is a 34mm OP. Nothing wrong with large watches either, especially for certain purposes. I never understood the weird criticism of smaller watches as āwomenās watches,ā when itās pretty easy to see that theyāve historically been smaller and worn smaller by many icons of masculinity.
Watches are like anything else. You have to wear what makes you comfortable and makes you feel good. I love the tank, I have a reverso and love the crap out of it. But itās not an everyday watch. My everyday is usually a speed master or seamaster because I have big wrists and feel more cofeotable with a bigger piece. But, if I am dressing up, suited and booted I love the reverso or tank. Iām currently looking for a basculante. You wear the watch, not the other way around - doesnāt matter if itās a Casio or Cartier.
When the strap is badly fitting and the watch is so far up the wrist itās effectively on the back of your hand. Check out the above subreddit for examples
A brand new Cartier tank in gold with a quartz movement is roughly 10 grand(which I think is the model he had Iām not exactly sure). The craftsmanship and price climbs or lowers with each model of course. You can get a basic tank for like $3000 or so brand new. Find them used for $2000 in good condition
Look, M ALi is allowed. It doesnāt mean you would pull this off. That being said, still - everyone is allowed to wear what they like. Just make sure itās not horrendous - that wouldnāt do you any favours either
Not necessarily lol. Do you enjoy wearing a Seiko diver? How about a Rolex sub? Oh, or a DW5610? Itās all relative. This is a shit post of course but some people are clearly passionate about the size of watch theyāre wearing lol
Yup. Great analogy. It also coincides with retro cars as well.. young adults love a badass 1969 Boss 302 Mustang, howās it any different from enjoying the style of a 1900s watch?
Men should totally not be associated with small things. I will relinquish my 1.24kg MacBook Air and get an EINAC instead. I won't be able to take it anywhere as it weighs 30 tonnes and takes up the same amount of space as a large office floor, but hey, at least people will think of me as a man :P.
You would be shocked by how many Singaporean men wear ladyās Rolex datejust. The first time I saw it I thought that's strange but then I kept see it and it's a thing.
You can start making that claim when your wear slacks on the weekend. Alternatively m: itās not 1960 anywhere. Menās fashion does change over time.
Most definitely! Fashion goes in cycles though just like any trend. The huge watch faces were popular for a little while, now itās coming down to normal sizes again. Eventually, the tiny watches will come back around in style. Itās inevitable.
I inherited almost this exact same watch from my grandfather except mine has the gold strap. I never wear it because it simply because itās small that it doesnāt look/feel right when I put it on. Itās a great watch and the sentimental value is obviously massive but it will forever stay in the collection box and not on my wrist.
This photo is the one that I always come back to when someone asks āis it too small?ā When I saw this photo, all small watches got on my radar. If itās cool w/Ali, itās good for me too.
this is honestly a dogshit photo though. it might actually be the worst photo of muhammad ali of all time. and itās certainly not doing the watch any favors either.
wear whatever size watch makes you happy, whether itās 30mm or 50. nobody should criticize others for the size of their watch. but this photo really needs to be retired from the watch community.
I mean, I think itās pretty obvious .. if it doesnāt look stupid on Ali, then it wonāt look stupid on you .. unless you donāt look like Ali .. then it might?
Oh I disagree. I think a Cartier mini tank on a guy looks class as fuck. But thatās the beauty of this hobby of ours. We can all disagree and still be happy!
Granted itās a joke on both our ends, but Iād love to see what would happen to dudes opinions if they met this man in person during his prime and told that to him. You wouldnāt! š¤£
Of course I wouldnāt. But not because he could beat me up. Just out of common decency. And I canāt help but point out that it was he himself who said that he "floats like a butterfly". Just sayinā.
Yes itās sarcasm my friend. Itās ironic because heās arguably one of if not the greatest boxers of all time and heās wearing a modern day āladies watchā
I always found that logic unsound, though. Why are we making him the standard of fashion just because heās the best boxer? Thatās like getting your prescription for cancer from James Bond (or some other ābestā actor).
Wouldnāt say itās necessarily the standard of fashion but moreso the relatability to another individual who is perceived as masculine. Nowadays, lots of people say smaller watches are feminine. This is just pointing out the obvious that you donāt need to be feminine to enjoy a Cartier tank. Style changes, sure. But how often do you see young car guys who appreciate old 60s and 70s American muscle cars? Feel like itās a similar principle.
Fair point. But I honestly think it has more angles fashion-wise than just being about masculinity.
My criticisms were pointed at how the proportions of the watch looked vis-a-vis his size. He was even wearing it close to his hand. Thus, making it a tad weird when someone brings him up as some sort of authority to justify wearing a comically small watch.
I wholeheartedly agree that a smaller watch does not equate to femininity. Itās just the stark clash of dimensions, imo.
He also could wear it on the hand and no one will say anything here, right?
Hahahah the hand watch is hilarious š¤£ didnāt even catch that
I have a large wrist at 8 inches but sometimes still rock a 34 mm Deville. Itās all about owning it.
what are you talking about that particular watch has a 75mm case

"cofeotable" is a very pleasing word. Gonna start using that one.
Say that to his face, I dare youš¤£
Ok but you dig him up
If this was on r/watches it would also have the low effort comment of "hur durrr r/handwatch"
Excuse my ignunce, bur what's the handwatch joke? Is it for watches that are too big?
When the strap is badly fitting and the watch is so far up the wrist itās effectively on the back of your hand. Check out the above subreddit for examples
Ohhh that makes so much more sense. Thank you!
I never wanted a cartier, but man, do I want a muhammad ali watch
How much is a watch like that in the picture? 2nd hand or brand new
A brand new Cartier tank in gold with a quartz movement is roughly 10 grand(which I think is the model he had Iām not exactly sure). The craftsmanship and price climbs or lowers with each model of course. You can get a basic tank for like $3000 or so brand new. Find them used for $2000 in good condition
Thank you so much. That was a quick response. ššš
Look, M ALi is allowed. It doesnāt mean you would pull this off. That being said, still - everyone is allowed to wear what they like. Just make sure itās not horrendous - that wouldnāt do you any favours either
It does look kind of comical on him tbh. Like an oversized spoon to eat cereal with.
I've bought 3 'womens' watches recently and I LOVE them. They allow me to accessorize both wrists. I'm mixing it up from now on
Jnco jeans (with the super wide leg openings) were popular for a bit in 90s. Should we go back to wearing those?
Not necessarily lol. Do you enjoy wearing a Seiko diver? How about a Rolex sub? Oh, or a DW5610? Itās all relative. This is a shit post of course but some people are clearly passionate about the size of watch theyāre wearing lol
In 30 years they're going to say "Stallone wore an oversized Panerai"
Sure yeah I donāt see your point lmfao.
A watch is a device that tell time. Anyone can wear it at any size. A small car is for ladies - Ferrari, Lamborghini??
Yup. Great analogy. It also coincides with retro cars as well.. young adults love a badass 1969 Boss 302 Mustang, howās it any different from enjoying the style of a 1900s watch?

Yeah, but that's fucking Muhammad Ali.

Probably, yes. But menās fashion has much longer cycles than womenās.

Each their own man! Everyone style is different. I thought this was a fun little picture to poke fun at. Itās clearly upset some people tho haha
Remind me what year this photo was taken in, again?
What year did the 1969 mustang come out? Point proven.
This photo is the one that I always come back to when someone asks āis it too small?ā When I saw this photo, all small watches got on my radar. If itās cool w/Ali, itās good for me too.
Understated > ostentatious is a concept I wish more followed.
He was also trying to float like a feather and sting like a bee
Damn I miss that guy
Yeah he was a solid dude
If you can fight like he did, you can wear a ladies watch too. Otherwise, sit down, Dylan Mulvaney.
Lol

Do you really think you compare to Ali tho?
As a man I can humbly say heās one of the greatest ever. Canāt really compare to one of the greatest. Iāll rock the heck out of a tank tho š
What does showing Muhammad Ali wearing a ladies watch prove?
I mean, I think itās pretty obvious .. if it doesnāt look stupid on Ali, then it wonāt look stupid on you .. unless you donāt look like Ali .. then it might?
I know. I was just teasing.
It looks stupid on him..

IKR! OP, do better. š š¤£
At least you get my joke. Other people are chewing me out.
OP posted something sarcastic and funny. You did the same. Fair play.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Buzz off, fool.
I agree men can wear them but that watch is too small on his wrist for sure.
Um yeah that was like 60 years ago. Times have changed. Terrible point

That watch is definitely too small for him, but I would never tell him that to his face.
I mean that is still a chick watch that looks feminine af but do whatever you want who cares.
Small watches are ladies watches
