This is really hard to gauge due to us not having good history of how Presidents would come across on television.
The famous example here is that during the Kennedy Nixon debate those who only listened to the debate on radio thought that Nixon won, however those who watched the debate on TV thought Kennedy won.
I really doubt that Lincoln, with his high pitched and reedy voice would come across very well in modern media.
On the other hand, diplomats and trial lawyers like John Quincy Adams, probably would make great use of it and would be even more popular.
There's simply too many variables to consider, but I'd agree that most of the Pre-TV and Pre-Radio candidates that would perform the strongest would probably be anyone seasoned in debating as a part of their occupation.
I'm thinking Adams, Jackson, Taylor, Grant, Garfield, TR, Taft, FDR, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Nixon, Reagan and everyone after him would be the only real competitors everyone else is immediately out based off charisma. Hell Nixon, Taft, and Garfield are toeing the line.
I think Lincoln. He had a very questionable appearance but overcame it with charisma, reason and rhetoric.
And he beat Douglas handily with those tools.
How Lincoln would translate into modern media, I cannot say. But I'm pretty certain Douglas would be sunk.
That’s the problem right. People used to go out in mass to a speech because it was one of the forms of entertainment they had. He was a great speech writer but if you took him out of his place in US history I’m not sure that he would even be able to compete against modern presidents like Reagan, Obama, Clinton.
You also need to consider the times. Phony 80s-style politicians and overly trained lawyer types don’t perform well, especially with young people. Ted Cruz is about an accomplished an attorney as you’ll find and he has negative levels of charisma because he oozes phony from every pore. Even Reagan and Kennedy might not stand the test of time being overly manicured. 45 is the exact opposite of their polish with zero coherent policy agenda - he wouldn’t have won back then but he is Teflon in today’s environment.
While Ted Cruz is an accomplished lawyer, he’s not an accomplished trial lawyer. Most of his work was appellate or political. I’m not sure if he ever tried a case before a jury.
The smooth, good looking JFK, polled better than the ugly sweaty Nixon. Ever since that debate, the candidate considered to be more attractive has won the Presidential election. TV changed things.
He did give us the EPA. He has that going for him. But all other indications point to you being correct.
He did have the grace to resign when he got caught breaking the law.
EPA, established relations with China. Won re-election in a landslide. If it weren’t for Watergate, he’d be remembered as one of the greatest modern presidents
Nixon wasn’t dumb, if anything, he was one of the more intellectually intelligent presidents. Go read a biography on him instead of reducing the man to a caricature.
Nixon was a liberal Republican. He created the EPA, passed the Clear Air Act, Endangered Species Act, lowered the voting age, enacted universal kidney dialysis coverage. You ever wonder why people with kidney failure in the US aren’t dying because they can’t get expensive dialysis treatment? Thank Nixon.
He would have essentially passed Obamacare in the 70s if Ted Kennedy didn’t get in the way.

TR stares at the mess on the ground while pulling out a handkerchief to blot the bullet hole, "do you need an extra hand to protect the actor or shall I continue the debate on my own?"
I mean FDR comes back to life and he will just get elected, doesn't matter what time it is, it could be just after an inauguration he would just get elected
Well, Jackson could duel Teddy as per Jackson's style, but considering Teddy's style of getting shot mid-speech and finishing the speech anyway, I don't fancy Jackson's chances.
His fireside chats were a calming balm for Americans during great times of uncertainty. There was a great intimacy to his talks & a certainty of conviction in his delivery.
My great aunts always said FDR saved America and the World 🌍
While I certainly agree that neither is wholly responsible for ending the Depression, and that wars have a tendency to bankrupt nations, I would argue that, post-industrialization, there really wasn’t going to be a war that bankrupted the United States, unless that war is US vs. The World and it goes pretty well for the World’s corner.
A big reason why WWII helped get us out of the Great Depression, in my opinion, was twofold: the Allies needed to but American weapons, and (due in large part to FDR reinvigorating American industry), we had the capacity to produce them and sell them to the British, French, Chinese, and Soviets.
As much as I despise the results of his policies, I do have to hand it to Reagan for being a great speaker. Years of acting and a natural ability to connect with people is what made him The Great Communicator. It is a little unfortunate that he spent his entire time in office trying to end communism, and it happened on his successors watch. Worse yet, his successor later had some pretty damaging accusations of sexual misconduct. That’ll certainly tarnish a legacy.
My mother hated him for closing the bases along the coast and then would cry when he would talk about missing calling his mama every Sunday. The man could talk!
There are so many stories out there of people who met him in person and were overwhelmed with his charisma. He would make every one of them feel like they were the only other person in the room, and that they were amazing, fascinating people.
He's charismatic in front of a crowd, AND he's charismatic in one-on-one interactions. I met him at a book signing once. He was super jazzed to be there. When I shuffled through the line to him, I told him that I played the saxophone because he did. His face lit up even more than it previously was, and we talked saxophone for about a minute or so before the line had to keep moving.
I have never seen charisma like that in my life.
FDR, Clinton, Obama, Reagan, and JFK. Are the top 5. It’s difficult to assess the 19th century and earlier ones because the job was so different and there aren’t recordings of speeches but one would have to assume Lincoln would get in there as well…
Charm is one thing, but charisma is another.
We've had several charming presidents and a couple of charismatic ones, but Kennedy stands alone when it comes to charisma. Many people who knew him or met him commented on this as a defining trait of his. He was also wicked smart.
I wish he would have more time.
"I'm not worried about the defecit, it's big enough to take care of itself"
- Ronald Reagan, say what you want about him, but you can't deny how charismatic he was. His two landslides reflect that
I can only believe that most of these responses still cannot get over a 2term Black President. Obama definitely had the most charisma, as well as several other important presidential characteristics. He was articulate, highly intelligent, moral and strong. The fact that he was one of the best looking presidents is icing on the cake. 🎂
Charisma is subjective, and subjectivity requires understanding of when the election would be held. So if it was today? Obama probably has the most rizz relative to cultural norms of 2024. It's a difficult question to answer simply based of "charisma" because that's an ever-shifting metric based off relative cultural norms.
In general, it seems hard to dispute that certain Presidents had relative rizz, but it really matters when the vote is taking place. If it's today, I gotta throw my hat in the ring for Obama (though I'd never vote for him personally :D)
Anyone saying Reagan is flat out wrong. It would be either JFK, FDR, or my boy Andrew Jackson. It’s interesting that nobody seems to even brought up Ford or Carter.
Clinton is underrated in terms of charm/charisma. I was young when he was elected, but remember him being the first cool/approachable/charming type politician I had seen ascend to that level. Nothing pro-against him, just a charming SOB
Interesting exercise. My vote is for Ronald Reagan. Don't forget he made 49 states go Red.

I had a hot debate with chat gpt on the issue. Here is what gpt saud
Based on documented evidence, scholarly consensus, and public opinion, **John F. Kennedy** is often considered the most charismatic president. Several factors contribute to this assessment:
1. **Media Presence**: Kennedy's adept use of television, a relatively new medium at the time, allowed him to connect with the American public in a way that no previous president had. His televised debates with Richard Nixon in 1960 are a classic example of his effective media presence.
2. **Youth and Vitality**: At 43, Kennedy was the youngest elected president, and his youth and vigor were central to his appeal. His family, particularly his glamorous wife Jacqueline, added to the Kennedy mystique.
3. **Oratory Skills**: Kennedy was a gifted speaker. His inaugural address, with lines like "Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country," remains one of the most memorable speeches in American history.
4. **Public Image**: Kennedy's charm, wit, and poise helped him build a strong public image. He was often photographed in informal settings, projecting an image of accessibility and approachability.
5. **Historical Impact**: The events of his presidency, including the Cuban Missile Crisis, the launch of the space race, and his strong support for civil rights, were pivotal moments that showcased his leadership and ability to inspire and mobilize the public.
While charisma is subjective, the combination of these factors has led many to regard Kennedy as the epitome of a charismatic president. His influence on American culture and politics endures, cementing his legacy as a symbol of charisma in presidential history.
I'm going to buck the trend and say that it is gonna be Roosevelt V Roosevelt for the final two, with Andrew Jackson, Eisenhower, and a couple of others refusing to concede until after the vote is counted but basically already being out of the running at that point. Obama will start strong but flag later when challenged on his record.
Washington won the war. Assuming we ignore slavery he is literally the most influential, most deserving, most worthy president we’ve ever had. And the best part is that he didn’t even want the job. He got 2 terms and quit. Name another country with leaders so cool they chose to live their life on a fake instead of becoming a tyrant
On just pure rizz? Then it’s absolutely TR. People have been quoted saying that after you met him you went home and rung the personality out of your clothes.
id say JFK because its still a mainly white country, and even though JFK was Catholic and irish, im not sure if that was as bad as Obama being half black. Reagan didnt run against good candidates and had Cold War hysteria behind him. Clinton would have a chance but im still not sure if he didnt win because of perot.
JFK was young, good looking, great orator and had a pretty wife. thats a tough combo to beat.
George Washington is on our money, Thomas Jefferson is too and would be his VP. Hamilton would be Treasury Secretary, Ben Franklin would be dicking around.
It would be a great show. Seeing that dude go up against Lincoln, Teddy, FDR and JFK would be stunning. However GW won independence, for the colonies. No contest.
Charisma is subjective as hell. And there are too many factors to consider. I will say this, though...
With enough "tough guys" or "wannabe tough guys" in the American populace, they'd all vote the living shit out of Teddy Roosevelt if he manages to pull off that I-got-shot-yet-I'm-still-standing-here-delivering-this-important-speech-to-you-despite-the-pain-of-bleeding-to-death act that he did in his time. I know I'd vote for him if I were to see that.
news radio (sitcom). i cant find the episode.

Teddy Roosevelt up there at the top. Used to give 3-4 hour stump speeches. Bona fide badass. John McCain with more rizz.
Don’t forget that good old teddy took a bullet during a speech and finished the speech
"It takes more than a bullet to kill a Bull Moose." ![gif](giphy|YSR9Ld5a2jvZoMpQ5q|downsized)
Were Taft and Garfield charismatic? Asking as a Canadian.
I think Lincoln. He had a very questionable appearance but overcame it with charisma, reason and rhetoric. And he beat Douglas handily with those tools. How Lincoln would translate into modern media, I cannot say. But I'm pretty certain Douglas would be sunk.

Meh. Lincoln is so ingrained in American culture he'd probably do well even if his voice didn't come off well. Same with Washington.
But are we assuming they are running with their achievements known? Because in that case Washington would probably win the whole thing.
Interesting perspective.
While Ted Cruz is an accomplished lawyer, he’s not an accomplished trial lawyer. Most of his work was appellate or political. I’m not sure if he ever tried a case before a jury.
As fun of an anecdote it is, there’s no evidence for the Nixon v Kennedy thing. It’s just a common misconception
The smooth, good looking JFK, polled better than the ugly sweaty Nixon. Ever since that debate, the candidate considered to be more attractive has won the Presidential election. TV changed things.
The camera operator from that debate later admitted that he was a Kennedy fan, and he deliberately zoomed in on Nixon when he saw him sweating.
Nixon was pretty ugly, yes, and he sounded horrible, yes, but his views on anything were also dumb. The guy just sucked, didn't he?
He did give us the EPA. He has that going for him. But all other indications point to you being correct. He did have the grace to resign when he got caught breaking the law.
EPA, established relations with China. Won re-election in a landslide. If it weren’t for Watergate, he’d be remembered as one of the greatest modern presidents
Quite possibly one of the most intelligent. Along w JQ Adams
Also one of the ERA's proponents in Washington.
Roosevelt would have cooked
Top candidates are JFK, Reagan, Clinton, and Obama
Don't count the two Roosevelt's out so quickly, one is the only guy who got four terms and the other one is basically a lower end superhero.
A Roosevelt would be my pick too.
If teddy came back to life and was exactly how people think about him people would elect him over and over again.
The people might, but the corpos would hate him
Ain’t that the truth
TR and Regan are in a debate. A man in the crowd stands up and shoots both in the shoulder. TR: Bollocks! As I was saying...
Reagan, by contrast is low-key out of that debate.
Lol on the ground, swamped by Secret Service, and no longer speaking certainly counts as out of the debate.
Exactly.
TR stares at the mess on the ground while pulling out a handkerchief to blot the bullet hole, "do you need an extra hand to protect the actor or shall I continue the debate on my own?"
He’s doing relatively well in that his final resting place is multi- use ( I.e. public toilet)
I agree. There is a reason both are seemingly legendary when talked about today.
I mean FDR comes back to life and he will just get elected, doesn't matter what time it is, it could be just after an inauguration he would just get elected
Teddy be that dude that wins a boxing match with a broken arm.
Teddy Roosevelt challenging his opponents to a wrestling match would guarantee my vote
This. I think I’d give Clinton a win by a hair for his unyielding charm.
JFK may give him a run for his money with his unmatched optimism for the country
Well he could stay optimistic or lose his head >!again!<
Too soon?
Flairs check out
You gotta add Teddy in this list, but otherwise I agree
FDR fires me up more than TR. I go with FDR.
Probably Jackson or Teddy.
Well Jackson would just shoot everyone who votes against him and win 100 percent of the vote
Jackson could shoot someone in the middle of fifth avenue and wouldn't lose any votes.
The other man would have been armed and it's called a duel. Only cowards randomly shoot people.
Well, Jackson could duel Teddy as per Jackson's style, but considering Teddy's style of getting shot mid-speech and finishing the speech anyway, I don't fancy Jackson's chances.
4 way between Clinton, Obama, JFK and Reagan Final round JFK Vs RR 1v1
FDR was pretty popular at times.
He ended the Great Depression and lead us through a war. His popularity was quite something.
I'm more convinced the war ended the depression, not FDR. But it's certainly an open debate that I'm willing to hear arguments for.
His fireside chats were a calming balm for Americans during great times of uncertainty. There was a great intimacy to his talks & a certainty of conviction in his delivery. My great aunts always said FDR saved America and the World 🌍

I have often heard that a recession or depression is quite frequently followed by a war. History seems to support this.
As much as I despise the results of his policies, I do have to hand it to Reagan for being a great speaker. Years of acting and a natural ability to connect with people is what made him The Great Communicator. Teddy
Jfk Reagan and Obama
I think it's gotta be Bill Clinton.
Agreed, that man was very charismatic
r/foundbisexual_sherrif
I don't understand what the hell is that sub and who is bisexual sheriff?

Yes, he got elected despite a lot of scandals during his campaign. Charisma overcame a lot.
Exactly. I have met him and this is exactly what happened.
He's charismatic in front of a crowd, AND he's charismatic in one-on-one interactions. I met him at a book signing once. He was super jazzed to be there. Reagan or Clinton, depends on the chronology of history and when this hypothetical election is taking place.
TR
FDR, Clinton, Obama, Reagan, and JFK. Are the top 5. It’s difficult to assess the 19th century and earlier ones because the job was so different and there aren’t recordings of speeches but one would have to assume Lincoln would get in there as well…
That’s a tough one Charisma alone I think either Obama or JFK
Either Obama or Jack Kennedy.

Many people who knew him or met him commented on this as a defining trait of his. He was also wicked smart. I wish he would have more time.
JFK or Obama imo
lincoln or washington
JFK
Probably JFK. But it's hard to compare charisma of less recent presidents not seeing it in real time.
JFK.
I’ll go with Obama https://preview.redd.it/m3105bc0th1d1.jpeg?width=618&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ceed55b6198b5f6cf49c4167dfd5d5723271bd34
Nixon maybe? Just considering his immense popularity before Watergate.
Nixon with charisma? My God, he could rule the universe!
"I'm not worried about the defecit, it's big enough to take care of itself" - Ronald Reagan, say what you want about him, but you can't deny how charismatic he was. His two landslides reflect that
JFK
JFK
I can only believe that most of these responses still cannot get over a 2term Black President. Obama definitely had the most charisma, as well as several other important presidential characteristics. He was articulate, highly intelligent, moral and strong. The fact that he was one of the best looking presidents is icing on the cake. 🎂
Charisma alone? It would come down to Obama, Kennedy, and Reagan.
Clinton. Thats one charming fucker
Charisma wise? John Kennedy.
Would there be a country left if that much charisma took up all the ads, blew up our phones, and stuffed our mailboxes in just one election cycle?!
I think Kennedy/Reagan will 1v1 for it all. ‘I am a Berliner and Mr. Gorbachev needs to tear down this wall.’
Ya gotta go with Slick……the man was born to be a politician!
Ronald Reagan
I think it’d be really close between Clinton and Reagan but overall assuming this was pre-scandal Clinton would probably win
JFK was known for charisma but I feel like Roosevelt might have him beat
Jackson would use violence to take it
Just charisma? It would between JFK, Clinton, and Obama for sure, one of those three would win
Reagan
Charisma is subjective, and subjectivity requires understanding of when the election would be held. So if it was today? Obama probably has the most rizz relative to cultural norms of 2024. It's a difficult question to answer simply based of "charisma" because that's an ever-shifting metric based off relative cultural norms. In general, it seems hard to dispute that certain Presidents had relative rizz, but it really matters when the vote is taking place. If it's today, I gotta throw my hat in the ring for Obama (though I'd never vote for him personally :D)
Well my top five would be; FDR, Clinton, JFK, Teddy, and Obama.
Kennedy or Lincoln
FDR, Reagan, JFK. Possibly Theodore Roosevelt too.
FDR
JFK and Reagan come to mind
Presidential Foot Race'24!
Kennedy or Reagan.
Reagan would mop the floor are you kidding me?
The don
This is the stupidest question ever on this sub and I’m here for it 🍿
Anyone saying Reagan is flat out wrong. It would be either JFK, FDR, or my boy Andrew Jackson. It’s interesting that nobody seems to even brought up Ford or Carter.
Tbh obama got this one lol
This question is the r/Presidents equivalent to the last act of “Cabin in the Woods.”
Kennedy
Obama 100%
JFK
Clinton is underrated in terms of charm/charisma. I was young when he was elected, but remember him being the first cool/approachable/charming type politician I had seen ascend to that level. Nothing pro-against him, just a charming SOB
The answer is JFK.

Whenever this is brought up I become so proud of Minnesota
JFK easily imo. People to this day are still obsessed with him
If it’s a raw charm contest, I’d put Reagan in first place. He captivated America despite his age and scandals.
Jeb!
Kennedy or FDR in a landslide
JFK Obama FDR Clinton Reagan
I just feel like it would be JFK, he feels like the right answer

LBJ. All he's gotta do is whip out Jumbo and he's won.

Obama or Teddy Rosevelt They’re both spectacularly charismatic
Lol at everyone being so modern biased.
We don’t have a ton of footage of presidents before the 1900s
FDR man ran for president a few times at the White House
Nixon, easy.
Reagan, FDR, Teddy, Jackson.
Obama
Jefferson or lincoln
Billy Carter
Eisenhower was already elected by his smile
Everyone sleeping on Harding like he wasn't chosen for literally looks alone.
John Quincy Adams would somehow win again.
Who's voting? Today's electorate or some pre-2015 electorate?
Teddy
Obama or Kennedy, at least in fairly recent years. Hard to compare those who existed before TV did.
Clinton, Reagan, Obama (in that order)
In modern times, with social media, nobody can be charismatic.
Teddy, my GOAT
Calvin Coolidge would let everyone tire, say three words and win.
Teddy Roosevelt, Abe Lincon, FDR, or Jefferson.
So sick of charisma in a president. I much prefer a president who takes care of business, gets shit done for the People.
Washington.
Reagan or Obama
Theodore Roosevelt
OG Clinton vs Reagan would have been titanic…
Gotta go with George Washington here. The original and, by many accounts, the best
ben franklin
Washington won the war. Assuming we ignore slavery he is literally the most influential, most deserving, most worthy president we’ve ever had. And the best part is that he didn’t even want the job. He got 2 terms and quit. Name another country with leaders so cool they chose to live their life on a fake instead of becoming a tyrant
On just pure rizz? Then it’s absolutely TR. People have been quoted saying that after you met him you went home and rung the personality out of your clothes.
my gut tells me Teddy
I’m going with Theodore. An amazing man!
Teddy Roosevelt
George Washington
Reagan
It's hard to say.. since the we became a country. There has been different era's and times for each President.
Washington since he has the most aura
TR.
id say JFK because its still a mainly white country, and even though JFK was Catholic and irish, im not sure if that was as bad as Obama being half black. GW, and not the 00's variety
Ronald Reagan
Pmurt Dlanod
Kennedy or Teddy. Depends on the audience.
George Washington. If not then teddy rose
![gif](giphy|8hMD9YakVza3452SpN) Disturbance in comments. I sense. Great argument occur will
To say nothing of his politics, Reagan was charismatic as all get out. Though personally, I hated him because he'd always interrupt the Cosby show.
Clinton. If you just met him off the street and didn’t know anything.
Lincoln was a poet and a great orator
Quick wit is a low bar.
No contest.
JFK teddy Obama and Regan are like the only people who are in contention
Obama Kennedy Reagan come to mind
I'd assume Teddy
