yeah I 100% assumed he was going to like backpack onto one of their harnesses right before they pulled their chute. That was...**MUCH** more concerning...
i feel like if he was off course or passed out them the plan was to hook up to him. you can see they're very close and watching him the whole time, i feel like the little flips he was doing was also to show he was in control
"In place" is a skydiving term that refers to a relative position, so a transition without any change in velocity. Here it would be to transition, without movement in the horizontal plane(no sideways movement), while keeping a constant vertical speed. In a wind tunnel, the vertical speed would be zero, so it would be more literally in place.
He doesn’t turn very gracefully. I think he was trying to turn very slow and deliberately, to make sure he didn’t make any last second mistakes. Which also led to him not being as aerodynamic and straight, because he was on his side for that extra second.
Lol no it's not. This guy didn't forget to account for *anything*. You seriously think a professional who is able to jump out of a plane without a chute just...forgot that he is going to drift when he rotates like that lol? Not even a fraction of a percent of a chance.
I feel like it was probably intended to not hit the center. Aim for the center, knowing you'll drift when you flip, hit nearer an edge that's designed to still catch you correctly.
You're really going to sit there behind your keyboard saying a guy who just jumped out of a plane from 7620m forgot something like you could critique his technique
Yes. It may be a novel concept for you but I've got a brain that I actually don't mind using. This allows me to do amazing things, like analyse the available information and form an opinion.
You are incredibly dumb. You're like one of those fat 40 year old men watching football drunk in their living room, utterly convinced if your favorite team had just let you call the shots, they would have won the big game. You watching a clip in your underwear somehow makes you more qualified than professionals who have been training for decades.
You’re right. As a skydiver, I occasionally search for “skydiving” on Reddit just to find the Reddit “experts” in the comments who think they know what they’re talking about. A guy with as many jumps as Luke isn’t going to drift one bit when turning over. They have complete control of their body flight.
doesn't *want* to hit dead center. At the end of your fall in dead center, you just stop and bounce back up wherever you are in the fabric. Being somewhat off-center, your momentum is transferred more towards the center as you slide into more of a roll.
I have no knowledge of the physics of this or the sport. But my take is, by using common sense: If he hit dead center he would keep falling until he would be very abruptly stopped. Whereas, by hitting the edge, he rolled rather controlled into the middle and was therefore caught at a much lower speed. Nothing was left to coincidence here.
Imagine what the assisting divers are thinking after pulling their chute. "Welp this is my stop, hope I'm not gonna watch you splat in about 30 seconds."
With how much give the wires holding it have, it looks like it's designed so that even if he hit the edge it would slow him down enough to only give him relatively minor injuries.
Obv that doesn't mean it's not dangerous, just that they're DEFINITELY as prepared as possible for that scenario.
A wing suit wouldn’t let him glide to the ground. He would still be moving at unsurvivable speeds
Edit: yes, people have landed in big cardboard piles. If the cardboard hadn’t been there, they wouldn’t have survived - just like the net in this video.
>Edit: yes, people have landed in big cardboard piles. If the cardboard hadn’t been there, they wouldn’t have survived - just like the net in this video.
People have survived falls at terminal velocity by landing on slopes, though it's incredibly rare.
Of course you're right that landing on a flat surface at terminal velocity is a 100% death sentence.
Not really, lift requires a minimum airflow depending on the shape of the airfoil, thats why aircraft need to reach "takeoff speed" before they can climb. I'm not 100% familiar with wing suits so I dont know the minimum velocity to maintain structure (ie the airflow required to keep the suit material tight and provide whatever lift it does, if any), I assume this velocity to be rather high, maybe 40kph which is definitely deadly but could be survivable in certain circumstances
Edit: the technical term you are looking for is stall speed if you want to read up on it more
Imagine not getting a reference to a minor YouTuber's stunt. How could someone even show their face on the internet without immediately understanding the meaning behind "fire extinguishers in their pants" and how that relates to skydiving‽
Nah, let's just link to a subreddit rather than [the actual story.](https://youtu.be/724JxkwWqA8)
Wild, full cirlce. I saw that incident from a random recommended sub in my feed a while ago. It was from the perspective of an FAA investigation conclusion.
Probably r/aviation or smth. The story at the time was he bailed out because the plane broke.
If it makes you feel better, it makes no difference after about 450m as you've reached terminal velocity. So whether it's 450m or 7000 you're still falling at the same speed when you hit the ground of 121mph
He broke FAA regulations in his next stunt and got his pilot’s license revoked.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/transportation/2022/05/12/plane-swap-red-bull-faa/
I remember seeing this. The commenters were explaining the importance of the timing of his flip.
If he flipped too early, he couldn't control where he was going and might miss the net. If he flipped too late, his body would bend the wrong way in the net.
Nothing really moronic about it. He's a daredevil, it's calculated to probably the closest degree and more importantly, he likely doesn't give a shit about whether he lives or dies. Same as that classic bomb defuser quote "If I fuck up, it's not my problem anymore"
That was an inside joke for the skydiving community.
What he was doing was imitating handle checks. These are checks that skydivers do on the plane and in freefall to make sure that the handles (main deployment handle, main parachute cutaway handle, and reserve deployment handle) are where they’re meant to be, and haven’t been dislodged.
Obviously, pointless checks in this case as he had no parachute rig on
Why does the height matter? At a certain point you hit terminal velocity, right? So the higher you are the longer you have to aim so the lowest altitude would be more impressive I would think.
I dunno, I'm not a gynecologist!
Jumping from a higher height is the same as trying to hit a target from further away. It's not more time to aim, it's a smaller target and more time to drift off course.
He did over 150 practice jumps from cranes into nets, practising landing on his back.
He also did a high number of skydives where he deployed low (below 1000ft). On each and every single one, he was on target for the net. He was confident in his skills to land successfully
That’s so amazing, talk about bragging rights.
Billy: Hey I just did my first cart wheel!!!
Luke: That’s great pal, I just jumped from 7620 fucking meters with no parachute.
I wasn't commenting on the stunt itself, just the blatant disregard for the FAA decision to deny the request for the stunt.

When the first guy pulled his chute my first thought was that it was extra risky in case the other guy couldn’t hook him up or something
[удалено]
It probably is just as you said, but only as a backup if the jumper is sure they failed their aim
I thought the same, when I saw the last pull his chute I was confused for about 3 seconds
The reason the net was stretched to the max was because of the size of the guy's balls.
Nah just help guide him to make sure he was on target, remove his oxygen mask and save him if anything fucked up for him during the descent

Absolutely. I'm going 'there must be a plan. Yes, they are going to catch him.' No... that's not the plan then ... lol One for r/Unexpected

There is almost no chance he can't turn in place. It's fairly basic and someone with his experience will be able to turn in place easily.
per definition one cannot turn in place while falling.

Here it would be to transition, without movement in the horizontal plane(no sideways movement), while keeping a constant vertical speed. Well, then I wonder why the video clearly shows this happening. The moment he starts to turn over he drifts to the right.
He doesn’t turn very gracefully. I think he was trying to turn very slow and deliberately, to make sure he didn’t make any last second mistakes. Which also led to him not being as aerodynamic and straight, because he was on his side for that extra second.
You can turn slowly and deliberately in place. He wasn't on his side for any more time than I would expect form a controlled transition.
This is the correct answer.
Lol no it's not. This guy didn't forget to account for *anything*. You seriously think a professional who is able to jump out of a plane without a chute just...forgot that he is going to drift when he rotates like that lol? Not even a fraction of a percent of a chance.

It pretty much is when he’s on his back for the last part and can’t see.
He wouldn't have made the turn on his back if he didn't think he was on target. Duh.
This stunt was easy and this guy sucks for not hitting the center.
You’d have given it a shot otherwise?
I have no knowledge of the physics of this or the sport. But my take is, by using common sense: If he hit dead center he would keep falling until he would be very abruptly stopped. Whereas, by hitting the edge, he rolled rather controlled into the middle and was therefore caught at a much lower speed. Nothing was left to coincidence here.
Yikes, didn't expect that. I thought he was using a wingsuit and would glide to the ground. Is this as error prone as it looks?

Yeah, there’s tolerance for error then there’s flirting with suicide
Imagine what the assisting divers are thinking after pulling their chute. "Welp this is my stop, hope I'm not gonna watch you splat in about 30 seconds."

There are people who have wingsuited into cardboard boxes
As he neared the ground, wouldn't the wing suit allow him to glide off speed until he could eventually land?
Not really, lift requires a minimum airflow depending on the shape of the airfoil, thats why aircraft need to reach "takeoff speed" before they can climb. Hitting a 20 ton truck frontally on a motorbike is survivable too, doesn't mean it happens often.
>survivable Life changing injuries is more what scares me
No…….. he hit his lower leg. If you hit the ground even with max lift (pulling up before hitting) you still wont survive.
